To save time in the kitchen, I signed up for this well-marketed company, CookUnity, that I saw advertised on Instagram. It claims to be fresh chef-made meals, made with whole foods, and no preservatives. I provided photos to show an example of how they explicitly state this on their site. My first order arrived Thursday, March 6, 2025. I look at the ingredients listed (that you are not able to see prior to ordering) and the first meal I look at shows the THIRD ingredient on the ingredients list is the chemical preservative sodium metabisulphite. I grab another box. THE SECOND ingredient on the ingredients list is sodium metabisulphite. In every meal, there is more sodium metabisulphite than there are whole foods. The first ingredient for both was coconut milk, and not even the authentic whole food, just coconut extract with water. I researched what sodium metabisulphite is, it is considered a harmful preservative that should be avoided especially in large amounts. It is being discreetly served to hundreds of thousands of people in super large amounts daily by this company. Research has shown it is known to have neurotoxic effects and potentially cause tissue damage in animals. It is recommended by the *** to be avoided for people with asthma and allergy sensitivities, such as me, and suggests first discussing with a health care professional. CookUnity explicitly lies about their unnatural ingredients everywhere besides on the box label that you can only see AFTER PURCHASING, and then refuses to refund when you call them out on it. I could not even eat these. I asked kindly for a refund and they had the audacity to offer me a mere $9 credit for a second delivery. These are deceitful and shady business practices that harm the general public. It needs to be put to a stop.Initial Complaint

Complaint Details:Company Name: CookUnity Transaction Date: March 4, 2025 Amount Disputed: $143.39 Complaint Type: Billing/Refund Issues Desired Resolution: Full refund for the unauthorized charge Complaint Description:I signed up for CookUnity, a meal subscription service. On March 4, 2025, I contacted the company to cancel my upcoming order, which was scheduled for delivery on March 9, 2025. However, despite my request, CookUnity refused to cancel the order, claiming it had already entered "pre-production" and was non-refundable.I believe this practice is unfair and deceptive for the following reasons:I attempted to cancel before the scheduled shipment date. My request was made on March 4, five days before the scheduled shipping date of March 9. The company had sufficient time to cancel the order, yet they refused. The company automatically renewed my subscription without clear consent. The cancellation process was not straightforward, and I was not clearly informed that my cancellation request would not be honored before the cutoff time.FTC Mail Order Rule (16 C.F.R. *****) states that customers have the right to cancel before shipment. CookUnity violated this rule by denying me the right to cancel and refusing to refund me.They failed to provide an easy cancellation method as required by the Restore Online Shoppers Confidence Act (ROSCA) (15 U.S.C. 8401 et seq.).I have made multiple attempts to resolve this issue with CookUnity, but they continue to refuse a refund despite my order not having shipped yet. I request a full refund and confirmation that my subscription has been canceled to prevent future unauthorized charges.Desired Outcome:I am requesting:A full refund of the unauthorized charge.Written confirmation that my subscription has been canceled to prevent further charges.I appreciate BBB's assistance in resolving this issue.Initial Complaint

CookUnity is literally scamming customers. They are sending extremely underweight items, much less than advertised. Food meals weigh less than advertised, with all the packingaging included, the nutritional facts are incorrect and Im not reviving what I pay for. When I brought this up to customer service, who did not understand English, they literally ignored me and told me its their terms. Yup, they admitted to being a scam. Its crazy.Initial Complaint

On February 12th I signed up for the service and immediately contacted them to skip the first week because I already had another meal delivery scheduled. They only allowed one option for a date of delivery and I was not able to select another date and assumed I would be able to change it upon completing sign up. That was not the case and I was not able to skip the week and they completely ignored my email. I sent two further emails and only received one response basically saying two darn bad we're not giving you a cancellation of the order. Their customer service is atrocious, the serving size is small and I expect a full refund from the company. I have never experienced a meal delivery kit with such poor customer service in my life. Attached to the screenshot of my first email to them, then a follow-up email to them and a third email to them.Customer Answer

My card was charged on 2/15/25 for a subscription I had already paused because I planned to be out of town. I initially thought their options were fine, so I chose to pause my account with the intention of revisiting it later. However, I later realized my card had still been charged.Their customer service has been unhelpful, stating that no refunds are offered for first ordersyet their website provides no clear warnings about this before signing up. Its frustrating for anyone trying to cancel because theyll take your money and refuse refunds.I reached out on 2/19/25, clearly stating that I had paused my account to avoid being charged. However, customer service claims that since the order was processed, they cannot issue a refund. I refuse to pay for something I never intended to purchaseCustomer Answer

On 2/10/25 I was canceling my account on my phone. When scrolling down to the bottom of the page there was a clear link for $200 for $400 credit which I touched as I was going to the bottom of the page and clicked cancel account. I only found out that I was charged $200 from my credit card company and email later from cooks unity. There wasnt a pop up screen to confirm anything just a charge in background. When I reached out to company it took them 7 days to just tell me too bad we unwilling to refund credits. This is a complete scam, when you just charge someone without confirming.Initial Complaint

I decided to sign up for CookUnity despite it being at the top of my budget, hoping for high-quality meal service. I placed an order for weekly deliveries on Sundays and was charged $159 2/13 for my upcoming Sunday order as expected. However, I later noticed a duplicate charge on 2/14 for another 16 meals scheduled for delivery on Tuesdaymeals I did NOT order and would not eat, including items like tofu and chickpeas.I never placed two separate orders, nor do I need or want an additional 16 meals. To make matters worse, there is no way to reach a live customer service representative to dispute the charge and request a refund. Their lack of proper customer support is unacceptable, especially when dealing with unauthorized transactions. This experience has completely broken my trust in CookUnity. I will be canceling my subscription immediately and taking my business to a local meal prep company that values transparency.Initial Complaint

I had previously ordered from this company(food delivery)they deliver cooked food weekly. I was told that I could cancel the service anytime or put it on hold. The menu is prepared two weeks in advance. I notified them on 01/20/25 and they charged my credit card 02/03/25. They sent me food which they picked for me, I'm diabetic, I received pasta and fried chicken. The food from this company is not very good some of it is full of grease and salt.Initial Complaint

On February7th as I was on my phone, I received a notification from my bank, Chime, about a charge for $207.56 from Cook Unity. Knowing I had cancelled, NOT PAUSED, my subscription with Cook Umity, I immediately contacted Cook Unity to explain I had cancelled. This was literally within 30 seconds of receiving this pending charge of $207.56 from my bank Chime. Cook Unity told me I had paused my subscription although I know I had cancelled this. They told me they would not refund me the $207.56 charge so following the chat with Cook Unity about this, I contacted Chime to see what could be done. Chime told me that I needed to wait until the charge had been completed before filing a dispute. After multiple agents from Cook Unity said they would not refund me, I filed a dispute with Chime against Cook Unity. I know for a fact this Cook Unity subscription was cancelled as I also had another food meal delivery service active 2 weeks prior which was Factor 75. Knowing that I did not want to forget about cancelling both of my subscriptions, I first cancelled Factor 75 and immediately following that cancellation, I cancelled Cook Unity and they were both cancelled on the same day and 2 weeks prior. I have had no issues w/ my cancellation to Factor 75 what so ever, but still left w/ a charge for Cook Unity for a cancelled subscription within. the allowed time frame. There is obviously a big concern and/or problem when cancelling with Cook Unity as there are 8 FULL pages of complaints here on the BBB website in regards to the same issues I am currently facing from other customers. It is absolutely ridiculous that when a customer contacts ********************** within 30 seconds of a pending charge, that the customer is told there is nothing that can be done to reverse or refund this considering it was cancelled Cook Unity had not even began making the food at the time this pending charge was made & should have fully reversed the charge. I also told Cook Unity to not deliver the food.Customer Answer
