1 starThis company has thrown me through the ringer. I rented a van from them a few years ago for a trip to North Carolina. Upon check in, I gave the attendant my insurance information as I declined their coverage, but was required to show proof of insurance. My current insurance plan covered car rentals, so there were no issues on my side with coverage. We departed the city and once we were about half way to North Carolina, we started to notice a crack in the windshield that was slowly getting longer. There was no impact or event that caused this crack when the vehicle was under our care. Upon return from the trip, I notified the attendant and filled out an incident report. Months later, I started receiving calls from a collections agency noting that I was delinquent on a payment from Hertz. Turns out they didn't record my insurance at check in and had billed me $1,200 for a replacement windshield and diminishment of the vehicle. After a month or two of back and forth with my insurance company, Hertz, and the collections agency, I was able to finally get the situation resolved (I had to pay the damages through my insurance policy (the correct one this time), however was still out of $300 due to insurance not covering the "diminished value". About a year after this incident, I received an email from Hertz (caught my attention since i had unsubscribed from their marketing for obvious reasons) and they have now banned me from renting from them. So to summarize, they received $1,200 from myself or my insurance company for damage that I didn't cause and then banned me from renting from them. I would highly advise staying away from this company. No attention is given to any of the processes and they clearly only care about money.Review fromNicole K

1 starIf I could give 0 stars I would. My issue is not with this location in particular but with the fee I was charged upon returning my vehicle. My car had a stench, I reported it to the customer service email DURING MY RENTAL, since you can't ever talk to a person. For my inconvenience, I got a gift certificate for the complaint, but was still charged $400 for a detail service a week later. I have been battling with them since 7/1/25 when the charge was reported to my credit card and collected. It is 7/23/25 and I am still going back and forth with them. When you contact customer service via email you get MULTIPLE different agents responding and all of the emails come in separately forcing you to explain multiple times the situation. I called the customer service number and I can't speak to a representative. I have multiple care case numbers and despite being compensated for my report of the smelly car BEFORE I returned it, they are continually trying to charge me to detail and clean the car. DO NOT use this rental company.Review fromJohn K

1 starMade a reservation a week in advance for a 1-way rental from MGM to ATL. Upon arrival at MGM the Hertz counter was vacant. This is 8AM on a Wednesday. The person working the Thrifty/Dollar rental desk next door stated that there was nobody working the counter that day until after 11AM. She went on to say they have no cars available, not even for Gold members. Of course none of the other rental counters had any 1-way rentals available on no-notice so now I have to resort to a 3.5-hour Uber ride to the airport. Wonder if Hertz will reimburse me?Review fromJeanne B

1 starLeft agency with two bald front tires. Felt unsafe on highway. Called # and emailed # on rental agreement multiple times w/out success. Called again and chose roadside assistance. They sent us to tire company for tire replacement after not reaching Hertz at TYS airport. Tire Barn reported they have never had such an issue reaching Hertz. We learned it's an independent owner GSP Transportation and could not get approval for tires. Tire Barn agreed we should not drive on tires could not reach TYH Hertz car rental. Paid out of pocket $517+ dollars for tires. Tried to reach TYH Hertz for 4 days. They didn't return one call or one email. Finally reached them & told roadside assistance had no right to send us to tire store. Mngr Cheryl was awful and could offer us no other way to request reimbursement. District Mngr Brandy too busy to call us back and discuss. After tracking down GSP Transportation in SC, given customer service # to Hertz. That office got resolution for me and tire reimbursement but main company could care less they put our lives at risk and would not offer compensation. Requests for manager names, email, and numbers refused. This company sent us on TN highway with bad tires. Cheryl is awful and her mngt is awful. Thank you to to GSP for giving me a real Hertz customer service #. They finally helped me. Anyone renting from independently owned Hertz agency such as TYS , TYH Hertz rental is in trouble. Cheryl and Brandy, district manager, don't care, never called me back, never offered compensation, continuously put blame on roadside assistance. If roadside assistance didn't help, not sure what would've happened Why is that number an option on rental agreement? why doesn't this independent Co. care to keep customers safe? assist them in time of need instead of blaming everyone else? I would never recommend them. Rent cars anyplace else than TS/TYH Hertz Rental. I have never had such a terrible experience. Wish 0 stars was an option.Review fromSarah M

1 starBait and switch. Would not honor the AAA reservation price. Charged me over $100 more than the price quoted that was reserved through CSAA, including a daily penalty for a gasoline car vs. an electric car. I will not use Hertz again, and for certain never use the center, known as: Berkeley HLE, 1061 San Pablo Avenue, Berkeley, California. Now, I see why there are such horrible reviews on Yelp. I trusted the partnership through CSAA. This time it was a major FAIL. Zero stars, if I could.Review fromSimon L

1 starHorrible experience dealing with Hertz after a car accident caused by their renter. I was legally stopped waiting to turn when I was rear-ended by a driver in a Hertz rental. The police report clearly shows it was not my fault. The collision shop contacted Hertz right away, and Hertz promised to send an adjuster—but over 3 weeks later, no one has shown up. Hertz also refuses to let the shop begin any repairs until their adjuster comes, so my car has been sitting untouched this whole time. I’ve called multiple times and their customer service is awful—agents hang up on me and give no answers. It’s completely unacceptable. Hertz is ignoring state law deadlines, leaving me without a car, and refusing to move the process forward. Avoid this company if you expect even basic responsibility or supportReview fromBrittany C

1 starDirty cars. Never answer the phone. I got to the location and called while in the building. The phone doesn’t even ring in there. It’s a waste of time. I had fraud on my account. I wanted to know if I could change my payment method because I wanted to extend. After over 20-30 calls. I actually called the 1800 number and they didn’t know the answer. Received a email stating that I could add a card as an alternative payment. Got to the location. Told them. They said it wasn’t possible. They canceled my contract. Open a new one and the vehicle I had “now needed a maintenance check”. They tried to give me a disgustingly dirty and old vehicle. That smelt like smoke and throw up. I had then void my contract! I use the car for uber now I am without a vehicle and payReview fromKhenedy L

1 starBusiness Name: Hertz Car Rental Category: Auto Rental Complaint Summary: I was issued a defective vehicle by Hertz through Lyft Express Drive, told it was safe despite a visible warning, and ended up stranded twice in one week — now they’re trying to bill me for repairs. Details: On June 24, 2025, I picked up a vehicle from Hertz and immediately noticed the tire pressure light was on. Staff swore up and down it was clean and safe to drive. That same day, the rear tire blew out while I was on the highway during a Lyft ride. I was forced to pull over with a customer in the car — a dangerous and avoidable situation. On June 26, 2025, the vehicle’s battery completely died in the middle of the road. I was stranded from 8:30 PM to 1:30 AM. Hertz refused to tow the car unless I paid, so I had to use my personal AAA membership. I made 4–5 support calls before a rep finally admitted the problem was with the vehicle and assured me I would not be charged. Despite this, I am now being billed for tow and repair costs. I was also refused a replacement vehicle until their repair shop “confirmed” a quote. On June 27, 2025, Hertz had the vehicle towed from where I left it — without informing me — and removed my personal belongings from the car. This included an unopened bottle of honey mustard and a pack of resealable baggies from Sam’s Club. I was not notified or given a chance to retrieve my items. This is not only unprofessional, it borders on theft. Between the unsafe vehicle, mishandled support, and now loss of personal property, I feel completely mistreated as a customer. I am requesting: • Immediate cancellation of all charges • Documentation that this faulty vehicle was the issue • Reimbursement for the AAA tow • Assurance that this does not impact my Lyft driving account Hertz put me and my passengers in danger twice and has handled the aftermath with misinformation and poor customer service.
