I booked a rental for 4 days through our corporate rental program (I work for a fortune 500 company). The email I received clearly indicated that I waived all insurance ($0 on each line). On the second to last day, I extended the reservation by one day and the confirmation confirmed the cost would only increase by the one day ($42 + taxes). I then received an email which shows I now accepted the insurance fees for $125 total which I never did. This took three calls to resolve with Avis. At first, they only wanted to offer a minimal partial refund until I threatened to file a chargeback for the full amount just to recover my time spent having to get this resolved did the representative offer a "one-time courtesy credit". It makes ZERO sense that someone could even add insurance ex post facto to a rental they've already had out for several days! Oh, and when I went to pick up my "full sized sedan", they had a 2-door coupe waiting for me. She argued with me that it was a "full size" until I showed her Avis's own website that stated, "All full-size models are 4-door cars" and they found another vehicle for me. I would never use Avis again after this ordeal. Terrible app, terrible billing practices, and terrible customer service. I will be sure to let our travel team know of my experience as well and hope they partner with a better rental company.

      Dear Mr./Ms. *****,

In regards to the aforementioned BBB complaint, thank you for giving us the opportunity to address your concerns.

Avis values the relationship that we have with our travelers and always strives to do the right thing. We apologize for the inconvenience this matter has caused.

Avis does not wish to deceive anyone we do our best to make sure that all pertinent information is made available to our customer within the terms and conditions of the rental contract which you acknowledge you had read and agreed to the terms of the rental contract. By way of explanation, at the check-out/start of each rental the rental sales agents is required to offer for a nominal fee the option to accept LDW, SLI or our Roadside safety net (RSN) coverage.

Our review found that at the start of the rental the service was offered and accepted. While we understand you have stated it was not your intentions to accept the coverage a full refund for the coverage was issued on May 4th, 2023 in the amount of $139.95. Please allow up to 10 business days for this refund to post back to the card on file.

Thank you for allowing us to assist you.

      Sincerely,

      Avis Budget Group

Avis responded that, "all pertinent information is made available to our customer within the terms and conditions of the rental contract which you acknowledge you had read and agreed to the terms of the rental contract. By way of explanation, at the check-out/start of each rental the rental sales agents is required to offer for a nominal fee the option to accept LDW, SLI or our Roadside safety net (RSN) coverage."
I want to make it absolutely clear that I never signed or received anything from the "agent" who handed me the keys at the time of the rental. There was never any discussion as to these coverages either. If you want to review security camera footage, please do so.
As for the email confirmation I received, it clearly states the "estimated total" as $161.37, which is $126 + tax. Only AFTER I added the additional day for $42 did my "estimated total" increase to $245.35. The emails don't lie - trying to suggest I made the mistake here is delusional and upsetting. This isn't some goodwill credit as Avis tried to make it out to be. Just own up to the fact your system made a mistake and as a result I had to spend hours of my time to only get back the money I was rightfully owed.

Poor customer service at the gate, non-existent customer service on the phone. I won't be using Avis ever again. If I could leave negative stars I would.

Avis charged me $125 to clean a "stain" on the back seat of the car. I explained I was never in the back seat. I literally drove from airport, to rental house and back to airport 3 days later. It cost less than $3 to top off the gas tank. Nevertheless, they insist on charging an extra $125 for cleaning. I asked for proof that they did not charge the prior renter the same amount and for photos of the vehicle after the alleged cleaning and have received neither.

I am not at all satisfied with my experience at Avis. I was using the car for emergency business travel; the only reason I had to rent the car in the first place was to drive to another airport 4 hours away because my initial flight was cancelled. Halfway through the journey, the engine of the car overheated, and I was forced to pull off the nearest exit to a gas station. I waited at the gas station for an hour and a half for the car to get towed and for my Uber to arrive to take me to the nearest Avis. I then waited two hours in the Avis Preferred line to receive my SECOND rental car @ 10pm. I am extremely disappointed, and I still had to pay for the rentals at the end of the day.

I take the time to give a review at the request of your website through an email I received. Took my time gave details and quality information about the business you suggested I review then when submitting it at the point we're you request verification through a code sent to email or SMS. I was kicked off the page and returned to a blanc review form. So all the time I spent, close to 20 minutes was just erased. Please take the time to save people's reviews during your verification process or perhaps request the verification before they spend time reviewing a business. Best part is when I try and send an email about this topic and the time wasted not to mention the intelligent quality review the company in question deserves I get a sorry cannot be send you email at this time. Leaving me no choice but to attempt to reach you through this review

Terrible cars. Terrible service. My car didn’t start. Thought the battery in fab was dead. When I called for roadside assistance I was told to find a locksmith. When I was finally able to get the car started I had to drive back to the airport to exchange the car. I would not rent from them again

They keep taking money without authorization, months after rental was returned. I did a stop payment and they used a different name to charge my card anyways. I decided to use a credit card with only enough for two weeks of weekly payments and now they won’t take my money. Money is available on my credit card but they won’t post it to my account. So that’s make my payments late and now they are charging a card that has been canceled for an additional $300 in late fees because they refuse to take my money. They charge us for protection but then don’t fix the vehicle after being returned. I feel like that’s stealing. Because if I damage the car they charge me for it. But don’t fix it. And rent to the next person. All three cars I had from them. Either charged me for a flat tire, kept the car for a month and then charged me for an addition week the the car was returned a day early. So if anything they owe me money. But instead charged me again. Second car broke down for 5 days went to the shop. They denied the repairs so I had to pay for towing again to return the car. 3rd car the seatbelt completely pops off while car in motion. Can’t lock the doors because the key fob is dead. They knew it was dead when they walked me to the car. I’ve canceled two different cards because of them and yet they somehow still charged me. And currently they have $900 tied up somewhere. My credit card company won’t even let me make addition payments for them to keep taking my money. I have overpayments on my credit card. I don’t know what they got going on. But messing with peoples money is not ok. You send a bill stating you owe. You don’t just charge people’s card 4 months later and expect it to all be good Maybe if I was rich I wouldn’t have noticed. But I’m not. I need every dollar. I’ve gotten evicted from my home because I was unable to make money while they had my car for a month. Then five days of not working. Won’t take money to charge late fee. Fraud

On 11 April 2023, I rented a Chevy Equinox from Avis Budget Group at the Norfolk Va Airport, Budget car number ******** Plate number: TN *******. After I paid for the car and went to the pick-up area I was told that was the last car. I went to inspect that car alone. When inspecting the car my kids said the car was smokey, I do NOT have a sense of smell due to a medical condition. I went back to the desk and they told me that was the last car and to take it or leave it. The lady at the desk took my paperwork and wrote off $20 at the top of the billing contract. I took the car and on 12 April 2023, I tried to enter a military base and was pulled over at the gate due to the smell of marijuana. When the guards searched the car there was evidence of marijuana in the car. I was detained and later released after a blood test and urine test found nothing in my system. I immediately called Budget to get another car at the 800 number and filed a complaint. The nearest place I could get a car was over 100 miles from my location and the rep told me to keep the car and vacuum it out and spray air fresh until I get back to the drop-off location in VA. The budget QA process is UNSAT!!! This vehicle was not cleaned nor was it road ready to be rented out. To include this car did not have windshield wipers. I had to go to AutoZone to purchase windshield wipers when it started raining. Please see attached pictures of the marijuana that was in the car. When I returned the car on 17 April 2023 I was told by Justin Smith that the manager Johann Gorjon was going to call me to resolve this issue. I have yet to receive a phone call from the manager. I am requesting a refund for the vehicle not being rental-ready, and the marijuana that was found in the car. $20 refund was not given as well.

Offering a means to prepay for a vehicle but requiring customers to jump through hoops to get a refund for early returns is a horrible practice.
When I went to return the vehicle, I was told I could be refunded 500 of the 700 i prepaid because I only had the vehicle 2 days instead of 7. This ended up not being correct. On top of that, it could not be done at the establishment itself.
This started a process in which I called customer service and had to argue for 30 minutes to have my refund request escalated for review. The representative told me I could not have a case number because they didn’t exist and that I would be contacted via email or phone in 1-2 business days. This contact did not happen.
After two days I called again to explain my issue concerning the refund to be told my issue was being reviewed and did have a case number which I was finally provided. Lastly, this representative told me to expect to be contacted in 3-5 more days.
After 4 days I reach out again for an update when I found out that my refund request was reviewed and that I could accept a refund of about 200. This brought up 2 concerns, why did I not get contacted like the 2nd agent stated if the request had already been reviewed and why am I being refunded 200 instead of 500. This agent stated they didn’t have an answer for my first question but did walk me through the receipt so I understood why I was getting the refund of 200 instead of 500.
This process should not be riddled with so many steps, headaches, and lies. Every step of the way someone told me inaccurate information until the very end. I paid for a service and wanted a refund for the portion I did not utilize. A company that goes out of its way to keep money for services not rendered and will say anything to get a customer out of there ear is a business I will never purchase from again.
