Within the last year, I was required by OpenAI to deposit a minimum balance to have access to all of the models on the platform. Given it only required a deposit, and not a subscription, I wasn't as worried or hesitant as I otherwise would have ******* hindsight, I should have been more skeptical to trust placing a large deposit with OpenAI. When I logged in to the account a few days ago, I was alarmed to see they had removed all of my balance, approximately $2,000 dollars, from my account, without notice.I thought this was a simple misunderstanding, but was astonished to find this was an intentional activity and that they refused to assist me further. I was provided a template response that clearly indicated this was a common activity in the organization, which made it all the more worrisome and troubling to me. Most US states have specific laws about depositing funds and treating those deposits separately from the subscription of services. I believe OpenAI is either breaking the law, or coming awfully, awfully close to it by claiming that deposited funds can be taken or expire. OpenAI is in an enormous position of power suddenly in our society, and if they can't be trusted to conduct business with honesty and integrity in day-to-day matters such as this, how on earth can they be trusted for more serious activities?Initial Complaint

Im filing this complaint against OpenAI due to a serious privacy violation and a complete lack of response. Ive been a longtime paying customer (over a year), and I submitted an urgent escalation after learning I was automatically opted into model training without my knowledge or consent. Worse, ChatGPT explicitly told me my chats were not being used to improve the model. That was false.When I checked my account, I found Chat ****************** was ON by default, meaning my conversations (including sensitive, health-related information) may have been accessed and used in training. I never knowingly opted in. No onboarding alert, no real explanation. The product itself misled me. That is not just misleading. Its a violation of trust.Other platforms (like Perplexity) opt users out by default. OpenAI does the opposite: silently enrolling people unless they know to opt out. How many millions of users unknowingly feed personal data into this system daily?I submitted a request through the support portal, emailed *********************************** submitted a formal DSAR through the privacy portal, and reached out to multiple other aliases over six consecutive days. Ive received zero response beyond an automated confirmation.This is not a support issue. This is a failure of basic responsibility around consent, transparency, and user ******* ********************** written confirmation that my data is no longer used for any model training, testing, or manual review.2.Permanent removal of all past chats from all datasets and written confirmation of such.3.An explanation of how this happened and what safeguards are being put in place.4.A policy shift to opt users out by ********** not even asking for a refund, but as a paying customer, I deserve answers. Open AI advertises free trial of premium Chat gpt for college students if they can verify there enrolled status. However at the end of signing up for this deal they require students to upload documentation that confirms there status. However after multiple attempts at uploading this information the system will always return an error even if it is a blatant lie. I ran into my university's name not being in the picture even though it was, I uploaded more information along side the original with the university's name even larger along side the other critical information. This was denied for not being official even though it was sourced from the university's official system that can only be accessed by students. I then changed out the second picture for one that had my private student ID that should only be accessed by that student plainly in sight and the associated student email along side all the other required information such as my dates enrolled , picture of me, etc. This was denied for being expired even though all the images where sourced the day of and clearly had the current date on them as well as having my current semester enrollment date on them. I was then quickly locked out for too many attempts, the system is clearly designed to advertise a deal and then purposely make it as hard as possible to actually get approved for as there is no way to quickly appeal the to the company on the misinterpretation of the pictures without going through the general customer service portal where I have yet to get any meaningful help on the subject.Initial Complaint

Dear BBB Team,I am filing a formal complaint against OpenAI, LLC for a serious breach of service integrity and failure to honor explicit contractual commitments.Throughout my communication with OpenAIs support, I was promised specific compensationsincluding a free annual subscriptionin case of service failures or delays. ******* via it subsidiary ********** is an investment vehicle that I invested in and have amassed a nice return on paper. When I tried to pull out $13 million dollars of the $33 million I have in my account they required me to pre pay the taxes first. That is violation of the 16th amendment to US Constitution. Most investment companies subtract the taxes from the amount being withdrawn. Open AI will not give me my money unless I prepay them $650,000 in taxes.Initial Complaint

I recently subscribed to ChatGPT Plus but became eligible for a free two-month student promotion after verifying my status through SheerID. I had a workspace team account last year in 2024 with this email as the owner. I canceled it but used my same email for my single Plus account. It was working and they were taking $20 out of my account on the 16th every month. Attached is the receipt. Today it turned back into my workspace account and it wanted me to activate my workspace and I lost my Plus account I had paid for. I emailed help and they were no help. I finally made a dummy email the owner of the workspace and removed my email from the workspace. Problem: I lost the Plus account that I had paid for on the 16th and I lost all the chats and memory of what I wanted it to remember about me. Please return it back to what it was before they changed it. I did not do anything - this is a bug on their end. Please reactivate my Plus account and restore my chats and memory.
