I used Instantcheck mate in April 2023 and subsequently cancelled. I just found out they billed my credit card monthly since that time. I called for a refund and they said there was another subscription that I was not aware of (nor have I utilized) that they billed me for. They were rude, would not connect me to a supervisor, said they couldn't answer if they have a billing department, and never contacted me back in 3 business days via email to resolve the complaint like they said. I also filled out a contact form on their website and never heard back. My understanding is it is illegal to make it difficult to cancel and cancelling a subscription should have cancelled the entire plan. Also, they said they gave me a refund but its only because I disputed the last set of charges I could so the bank got that back. The rest which totals over $600 they refuse to pay back. In compliance with applicable laws, all key termsincluding billing details, premium report options, and automatic renewal policiesare clearly disclosed before payment is submitted. Users must check a box agreeing to these terms before completing a purchase, and a confirmation email is sent for every order placed.
When Ms. ***** initially enrolled, she purchased two separate subscriptions: the Unlimited Dark Web Monitoring monthly membership and the Unlimited Person Report Membership. She successfully canceled the Unlimited Dark Web Monitoring membership online on April 5, 2023. However, the Unlimited Person Report Membership was not canceled online, which resulted in the recurring charges she experienced.
We have now canceled and disabled Ms. ****** account to prevent further access and charges. The charges incurred were disputed through her financial institution; therefore, any refund concerns must be directed to the financial institution.

This is unacceptable and I demand a refund. The email I sent showing the cancellation does not disclose there is a second subscription; simply states the account is cancelled. Also, Instant Checkmate never sent a letter via mail to continue this additional subscription that I have ever seen to home or business address. Per the Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act instituted by the United States ************************ your cancellation policy is illegal as there should be a simple mechanism to stop recurrent charges i.e. cancelling one subscription should have cancelled the other or we should have been notified with mail, emails, etc of the additional subscription. The wait times and being told no supervisor is available or has to call back etc is clearly not as easy as the initiation method (illegal, see lawsuit against ***************** Also, when I contacted via phone Instant Checkmate they told me the complaint would be escalated and I would get an email in 72 business hours. Never did get an email to this day. Nobody could answer what the email said or what date/time it was sent. I also emailed the company through contact us page and never heard a response over a week ago. A reputable business can see the account was cancelled in 2023 and I haven't used it since clearly fitting with not knowing of the hidden subscription. I demand a refund. The financial institution can't go back more than 60 days and recommended Instant Checkmate refund the services.Business Response

When a user activates their account, they must provide an electronic signature authorizing Instant Checkmate to charge their card as described, including for the automatic renewal of their membership.
Our Billing Terms are conspicuously explained on our registration page, ***********************************************, and in our Terms of Use. Customers are sent a confirmation email for any orders placed on the site.
After further investigation, we have confirmed that Ms. ******* most recent charges have been disputed through her financial institution in the form of a chargeback. Thus we are unable to process any refunds on this account.
Ms. Black should receive an update directly from them regarding any resolution. Generally, the dispute process takes between four and five weeks.

As discussed, a charge back should not warrant a lack of refund since April 2023. I already attached that the bank said this company should refund me. Also, my office manager never signed up for the account as we have no reason to use dark web monitoring, and we never utilized it either. This company failed to notify me via email or snail mail that they were billing me for this other account and incorrectly charged me since April 2023. I demand a refund. They make it impossible to reach higher up management and the law states that if you cancel a subscription, all are cancelled but they incorrectly billed me for one we didn't even sign up for. Also, my office manager utilized my card so if that's the argument they are using, her signature is not the one for the card holder of the account so I never authorized any of it then. Today I followed the steps to receive a report, I paid the $27.49 with my **** and then prior to getting the downloaded report. The site wanted to charge an additional $3.99 for the report, which was previously stated as paid, then lock me in for a continuous paid membership more than a month for which I paid the $27.49 for the 1 report which I do not have, because I cannot get the report I paid for unless I paid for the up sale. I want my money returned immediatly, I confirmed with my ******************* that my payment went through in seconds, and they said I could file a complaint shortly. I am filing with you to resolve this, since they say they have A Rating, I do not know how if they do not give you the product with a POS Price and you pay it and they still want more money before they give you the product per their POS Price.Business Response

I am requesting a refund, I did not complete the final check for the service, I checked it for 1 month and the $3.99 was not optional, if that was the case then I would have received the pdf in my email with the report I paid for. It clearly instructs on the site, that even though I paid the $27.49 for 1 report, I could not get the report even though I paid the amount to get it, unless I paid the additional $3.99. If they send me my report as stated throughout the process, then I would not be filing a complaint, because they stuck to there part of the bargain.Business Response

After reviewing the account details, we confirm that the account has been canceled, and the only charge incurreda pending charge of $27.49was voided on February 7, 2025. No further charges have been processed. Mr. ****** may confirm this credit with his financial institution if necessary.
Additionally, all pricing details, including any optional add-ons, are clearly disclosed at the time of purchase. The $3.99 PDF download fee is an optional feature available for users who wish to download and retain a copy of their report. However, opting out of this add-on does not impact a users ability to view their report online within their account. After reviewing the account, we can confirm that this $3.99 charge was not applied in this instance.
It appears there may have been technical difficulties accessing the report. If Mr. ****** was unable to view the report within the account, we recommend clearing the browser cache, trying a different browser, or accessing the account from another device. I am trying to find death certificate and ss# for my wife's father. the info was lost when her brother lost the family home. The website claimed birth/death certificates and possible ss# (depending on some factor) AFTER I paid there was no birth/death certificates even as a section. most of the info was inaccurate, and it states in the Social Security section that it can NOT provide this info by law. this is not only misleading I feel it is false advertising. I'm early January I came across their site and decided not to buy the report I wanted due to the price. Well, I received a 50-% notice and bought the file. They supposedly had a free trial, but I was charged right away. THEN, they just charged me yesterday after cancellation. This site is a scam. Instant Checkmate said they had a report ready for a certain phone number for 5.99. So, I paid 5.99 and created an account. After obtaining the account, there was another message that said to view the report, it had to be downloaded for an additional fee of 3.99. Then, we were directed to another page wanting 7.99, and then another wanting *****. The membership for 5.99 indicated that the phone number report could be reviewed and unlimited phone reports were available for one month. So, going back to the beginning, I entered the phone number again, thinking there was some sort of error. After entering the same phone number for a search again, I got a message stating "We're sorry, this doesn't happen often, yet we have no reports for this phone number." I have pictures of the statement that they had a report ready to view for the same phone number in the beginning. That's why I paid the 5.99, and created an account to begin with. I feel that Instant Checkmate has been very dishonest in their business practices, and want a refund.Business Response

I appreciate the BBB's assistance in helping me resolve my serious problem with Instant Checkmate which has published on its Website (******************************) my name and personal data without my consent which threatens my privacy, personal safety, and leaves me exposed to Identity Theft.
I have read the response from Instant Checkmate to the BBB dated January 6, 2025 and find it to be very unclear and no where does its response state that: 1) Instant Checkmate will permanently remove my ************* (name, address, telephone, emails, age) from its Website (******************************); and 2) Instant Checkmate will remove the associated Url that its Website is generating that also contains my name.Thank you again.

The price of $85.13 was not explicitly advised - simply asked for payment method and charged. No trial option offered at all! One report and my subscription has been cancelled - your site offers the exact info as other sites that offers services for less than $10! I have emailed the company as this is robbery. Consistent with applicable laws, all material terms, including billing details and automatic renewal terms, are clearly disclosed before submitting payment information, and each user is required to check a box separately agreeing to those terms before being charged. Our billing terms are conspicuously explained on our registration page and in our Terms of Use. Customers are sent a confirmation email for any orders placed on the site.
We have cancelled all memberships and issued a reversal to ****** Wises account back to the payment method used to enroll, and no further charges will be incurred.
