1 starTerrible service at the Calgary airport location. Gave me a car with 75k kilometers.Review fromN. D.
Date: 07/05/2023
1 starAvis gave me a damaged car, dents and scratches all over it. The car ended up dying two days before I was supposed to return it, had to winch it onto the back of a flatbed to take it to the mechanic.
Then, I get charged for the full 7 days. I told them to just end the rental when it got on the truck because it wasn't worth the hassle of trying to find another SUV. They also charged me for gas, but it's kind of hard to return a vehicle full of gas when it can't even drive.
Customer service was useless. They knocked 1 day off the 7-day charge, despite me returning it (on a tow truck) before it would have rolled over to the 6th day. The customer service rep said that "In the rental agreement, you are responsible for the vehicle until it gets back to the Avis lot". Makes no sense, because I was not in control of the vehicle anymore and the other rep confirmed the rental term was over once it got on the truck.
If anything, the company should be asking for forgiveness. They inconvenienced me, then charged me for the inconvenience.Avis Rent A Car

2 starsI tried to find my original post to add an update, but couldn't. So here it is:
UPDATE: Avis reached out after my review on BBB website and they made things right. They said they strive for correct information to be relayed verbally at the desk and, without overtly admitting fault, were gracious in their response. So kudos to them for taking the initiative to correct, even after I had already spoken to customer service and resigned myself to paying the bill. They deserve a thumbs up for their speedy response and action (and by action, I mean they provided me a credit). One thing that is very important to me in all aspects of life: admit when wrong has been done, and do what you can to make amends. I appreciate their response and want to make sure I relay that information, as it is only fair to point out what they did right, not just what they did "wrong." Thank you Avis. Kudos.Review fromDean W

1 starI have rented from Avis many many times before... But NEVER AGAIN!! ...
BEWARE... DEMAND AN INSPECTION WITH SOMEONE BEFORE YOU LEAVE. I rented a car to drive home from Spokane, Wa to Pasco, Wa., 2 hours. I used the express... got into the car(did notice a star on the windshield) thought nothing of it... drove 2 hours, turned in car... and 1 month later recieved a bill for $540.00 dollars!!!!!! They "claim" after "inspection" that I had done it, and the "inspection" before in Spokane it was not there. Total and complete b.s... Never Again!! And the pictures they sent me are a freekin dash warning light... ZERO to do with a windshield.Avis Rent A Car

2 starsI have been a preferred customer for Years. They have been my only choice for car rentals. This last rental I was shocked. There was a rate charge, that has NEVER been applied the way they did this time. I am not sure if the spike in rental prices out way long-term cusomer services and apreciation or they just didnt look into this better. I was charge for an additional hour at 40 minutes past the return time. Pick up 11:57AM returned 12:40PM. When I called the representive stated "I dont know Why I have never been charged for returned a little after the return time, but that is what happens after you are even given a 30 minute grace period to return"
Break down 11:57AM pickup time. dropped off at 12:40PM. exaclty 43 minuts not 60 minutes or more past turn in time. Okay now with the grace period she stated (30 minutes) which would have been been 12:23PM. leaving me till 12:57PM without a charge. So why was I even charged the $90.0 fee at all. 1st it was not a hour past time to change from the beginning. .. AVIS, you are starting to show valued customers like myself you DO NOT VALUE our business.
The Representive said well as a one time curtousy I will cut this charge in half (SAD) really should not have been charged at all.Avis Rent A Car

1 starI rented a car to drive from Windsor Locks, CT at the airport, to drive to Philadelphia airport. I paid around 200 for a one way trip, plus paid for tolls and gas up front. About 50 miles away from the Philadelphia airport the car stopped working, would not accelerate over 30 mph. I stopped and called the Emergency number on the paperwork. I spoke with a Customer Service Rep. and he asked if we wanted to get a new car or get an uber to the airport. We said we needed the uber because we had a flight in a few hours. The CSR called an uber and they paid for it. I asked him what else I needed to do and he said leave the keys under the mat on the drivers side. I asked again "so we are all set?" He said yes. I let the hotel we had pulled into know that they had a tow truck coming for the vehicle. 5 days later I get a message that says I have been charged for the 5 days and need to return the car. Needles to say, I didn't want to pay for those extra days, nor should I have had to. They ended up getting close to 600.00 from me for this. I will never recommend or use AVIS again, and will let all I know what they did.Avis Rent A Car

1 starAVIS tried to scam me for pre-existing damage by sending a bill to me a month after my rental. I reserved the car online and then rented the vehicle at the Kansas City downtown Avis. Before I even saw the car, the rep assured me I wouldn't be charged for the pre-existing crack in the windshield for my rental. I got keys to the car, but the rep didn’t offer to do a walkthrough to review damage with me. I was in a rush, so I took pictures of the car while in the parking lot, as well as noting the mileage and dirty interior of the car (also, it smelled like smoke). In a rush to get to an appointment, I left.
Later, seeing the contract, I noticed that the mileage was WAY off in the contract from actual mileage, and I called Avis to correct it. They fixed it—sort of, but not all the way and didn’t care about the details. The contract also said the car had a full tank, but it was only given to me with ¾ tank. They changed it for me, but to 7/8, which meant that I STILL had to fill it up.
I grudgingly filled up the tank. Upon return of the car rental at the airport, the AVIS rep immediately noted that there was a crack in the windshield. I said “that was already there,” and proceeded to show him photos taken the day I rented the car. He said “did you take these before you left the parking lot?” and I confirmed that I had. He ignored me, then circled the crack with a big car marker and we left to get on our flight, hoping that was the end of it.
A month later, AVIS sent me a letter and warned me that they’re going to charge my card about $500 for a windshield crack that I didn’t create. I immediately called them to report the scam, and amazingly, the representative miraculously found a document that says that the crack was present earlier than my rental. I asked him why the people sending me the bill didn’t see this, and he said he didn’t know. So they somehow didn’t have this noted anywhere for the bill collectors at AVIS? Right. This was a clear scam. Beware!Avis Rent A Car

1 starOne of their employees told me to hold on to a rental until he called me when they have one to swap me out with. I rented a car for Uber. Now this location is charging me for the time that I had the vehicle but could NOT make any money while I was waiting for them to contact me. I was just on the phone with Mark who hung up on me. They are very UNPROFESSIONAL and I AM NOT PAYING when I'm following the instructions of your personnel!!!! BEWARE OF SCAMS AND SHADY BUSINESSES!!!!Avis Rent A Car

1 starUPDATE TO MY PREVIOUS REVIEW:
It gets WORSE! When I arrived at Seattle airport to return the car, I was checked in and closed the ticket, no problem. Nothing said other than thank you. Then I got the receipt via email as I was headed back to my hotel. CAD 1463.71!!! (The price on the initial agreement was CAD 345.63.) When I looked at the receipt, the majority of the charges were from “Taxable Products/Services.” When I called Avis, they had no explanation and just said that was the price I agreed to. No, no I didn’t. I immediately called my credit card company to report that charge as fraudulent.
I then looked at my other rentals from Avis (3 in 3 weeks) and saw another ridiculous $300 charge for fuel pre-pay from our rental in Calgary AB. Even at the highest price for gas I saw (CAD 1.80/liter) and an empty tank (67 liters per the manufacturer) that would be CAD 187.60. Again I called Avis and asked for an explanation and was told that was the price I agreed to. No, no I didn’t. I called my credit card company to report that charge as fraudulent and continued on my vacation. The charge I had for a rental in NJ was as expected, so at least that was good.
When I got home, I called Avis, who now was expecting payment. As I went through each over-change with the agent, they basically told me “that was entered in error. We’ll correct that charge and credit the bill.” No explanation. Really? What the heck is going on with your Canadian branches Avis? Are they just entering charges just to see if we’re paying attention? That’s borderline criminal. I will never again rent from Avis. Never.Avis Rent A Car

1 starMark Davis's LLC Carpe Diem Solutions runs the Avis on W. Market street. Avis stole $250 from me by adding a "cleaning charge" to a very clean car I returned on Saturday. When I issued my complaint, the manager was rude to me, refused to send me photos, and hung up on me when I asked what the owners name was. I had to google to find him. Integrity, theft, and poor treatment of a long time Avis user means I will never use an Avis anywhere in the world. I am appalled. They deserve negative stars running a business like this. I have never been charged a cleaning fee in 20 years of renting from various Avis locations around the world and I have never been treated so poorly by a rental location in my life.Avis Rent A Car

****************,
After looking through the evidence, the charges for cleaning fees will be upheld. The cleaning fee was for excessive pet hair. Pictures were submitted to the portal as evidence of these charges and the vehicle took extra time (nearly 3 times the normal cleaning time) to clean due to the pet hair.
We make every attempt to make our customers aware of potential charges at the time of rental. It appears that you were advised at the time of rental that pet hair in the vehicle would be subject to an additional charge.
If you have any additional questions or concerns, feel free to contact customer service regarding this matter at **************.Christina S.

I have asked for the photos multiple times and have not been sent them. There was not excessive pet hair. When I returned the car I saw a few strands and that would have been a normal vacuuming. The seats were covered by myself and the dog did not ride on the seats. Due to Avis's refusal to produce evidence by showing these photos, and what the measurement for "excessive" was, I will continue to pursue justice and report this unethical branch of Avis.
