I have been charged for a lot of tolls with fees. When I have a low balance on my NJ EZ pass, I would throw in the exact amount of money in coins need to pass the toll booth. They still continue to charge my tag every time, even while I throw the exact amount of money in the hole. I had recorded myself throwing in the coins. Also, I recorded toll booths that are clogged with coins when I am throwing my money into. Because it is so clogged, it would get in the way of my coins dropping in and registering my coins. I am requesting an investigate. I am requesting that all the fees in the amount of $400, currently, and the fees for the letters I have not yet received, are removed from my account.Initial Complaint

Was set up with pay per toll with ** **** for years with no issue. EZPass NY account #******** and tag #***********. Received notification that my account was in the negative and spoke with a representative over the phone who confirmed that they have been having issues with ** ****. It seems that NY EZpass and NJ EZpass are separate entities, even though NJ tolls get paid through my NY pass. I paid $72.88 over the phone with my credit card on 7/23/25 for outstanding balance. on 7/23 I was able to successfully re enter my bank account information ending in 2208 to resume pay per toll as I had previously. On 7/26/25 I received another email that my account was $-13.73 and that my card was declined. I made an additional $25 payment on 8/16/25 with my account balance being $9.77 on that date. As of now, my EZPass is up to date with payments. I have never had a problem with toll payment up until last month. I'm asking that all fees be waived. Violation fees are over $600 and not something I can afford to pay right now. This was at no fault of my own.Initial Complaint

EZ Pass is imposing excessive fees as a result of their delayed billing process. By the time bills are issued and received, late charges have already been applied, unfairly penalizing customers for delays entirely caused by EZ Pass’s own system. This practice creates financial strain and constitutes deceptive and unfair billing.Initial Complaint

I have an NJ EZPass that has been mounted on my car. I also had a credit card linked to my account. However, I continued to receive fines, and the bills kept accumulating until I added a new card. I am more than willing to pay the tolls that accumulated from NJ EZ pass + late fees; however, I am not willing to pay the $50 fines/administration fees associated. I have been on the phone with them numerous times in the past couple of months trying to set up a payment plan. I kept getting the response of "someone will be reaching out to you via email to set up the payment plan." Yet, I have not received any sort of email. This has been constantly back and forth for the past couple of months, and I am trying to resolve this issue. I have been receiving threats towards holds against vehicle registration, and it has become a pressing matter in terms of having this resolved. Furthermore, I have been trying to dispute the charges accordingly, but there is also a set limit in the amount of disputes they allow per year.Initial Complaint

I am submitting this complaint against New Jersey E-ZPass (NJ E-ZPass) due to their failure to properly process a toll transaction for which I am a valid, paying E-ZPass customer. This failure has resulted in an unjust violation notice and an escalation to collections, despite my attempts to dispute the matter through proper channels.
Details of the Dispute:
Violation Number: *************-01
Date of Violation: May 18, 2025
License Plate: *******
Customer Name: ****-*** *******
E-ZPass Account Status: Active and in good standing at the time of the alleged violation
I have an active and properly mounted E-ZPass tag in my vehicle. There is no valid reason this toll should not have been processed automatically through my account. Upon receiving the violation notice, I promptly submitted a formal dispute and requested a review of the toll transaction and account activity to confirm payment.
Lack of Customer Service and Communication:
Despite multiple attempts to resolve this issue:
NJ E-ZPass has failed to respond to any of my emails disputing the violation.
Their automated phone system does not allow you to speak with a live representative, even after holding for hours.
I have received no updates or acknowledgments of my dispute.
Without any resolution or fair investigation, the violation was escalated to collections, which is unacceptable and damaging.
Request for Resolution:
I am requesting that the BBB investigate this matter and that NJ E-ZPass:
Remove this violation from my record and collections, as it was issued in error.
Acknowledge my formal dispute and review my E-ZPass account for proper toll activity on the date in question.
Improve their customer service process to allow for timely resolution of account issues and disputes, including the ability to speak with a live representative.
I am seeking a fair and immediate resolution to this matter.Initial Complaint

Ez pass has been charging my wife tolls as fines even though she has been using my second EZ-pass tag. I have still been getting charged for these tolls as well. They are not allowing her to have her own account now saying that she owes hundreds of dollars due to not paying tolls (even though I was paying for them) and tacking on extra fines as well.Initial Complaint

I received three toll violations from New Jersey E-ZPass back in July 2025. These violations involved a vehicle and license plates that do not belong to me. I reached out to New Jersey E-ZPass three times already to dispute these violations but nothing has been resolved. In the past disputes I submitted, I expressed that I've never even been to New Jersey. I have lived in ******** my whole life and I have no business in the state of New Jersey. I even visited my local police station to report these plates as stolen but the police officer who helped me told me that the license plate (**) ****** does not even come up under my name. At my local DMV they told me that all I have to provide is the vehicle registration for the car I currently own. I have done this. I have provided everything that I can to resolve this issue with the New Jersey E-ZPass but their response is always the same- "Please provide a copy of the temporary vehicle registration for the plate shown in the violation image." How am I meant to provide a registration of a car that I do not own? This morning I received a message from a company CREDIT COLLECTION SERVICES, a debt collector, for these charges. It is unfair that my credit score will be impacted for something that I did not do. All I want is that New Jersey E-ZPass removes all these charges related to this Dodge vehicle and this license plate from my name.Initial Complaint

I have owned an EZPass for 4 years and am registered both with EZPass VA and EZPass NJ. I carry both transponders daily and keep my license plate information up to *************************** NJ has been wrongfully sending me violations for 9 months. I have tried to dispute it with them, but they simply hang up or refuse to service me. I have tried putting my information into the form on their website to correct violations, but the form just fails and sends me back to the homepage. I have already paid them $700+ for fake violations and now they are billing me a further 166$ and have sent it to collections.Every day as I pass the turnstile I note it says no EZPass or toll unpaid. Again, I carry both transponders and have registered my plate. Despite this, they are purposely pretending not to have my information to overbill ************* can also try to contact them yourself using the information on their website. You will find what every other resident of this state has - most of their phone lines are not in service, their representatives will hang up if you ask about violations, they do not reply to emails, and none of their forms work. If I try to log into the system, it says system unavailable. They have purposely and maliciously made themselves inaccessible. This is also how EZpass maeks money. The toll is $2-3 yet the violation is billed as an extra $55 of "administrative filing fee." This is very clear price gouging, as it does not cost that much money to send an automated letter, they just know they can charge any amount they want because they are protected by the state.I am being billed constantly by them, and since they have no method of disputing or even contacting them it is impossible for me to try to resolve this with the business.Initial Complaint

I have been an EZ PASS customer for years. I was on autopay up until 2023 when EZ PASS removed me from auto-pay without my knowledge or notification. The reason they provided for removing me from auto pay is that my credit card was declined. Again, I did not receive notification in the mail.
EZPASS is alleging they sent notification via mail but we did not receive the notice as it went to an incorrect address.
EZ PASS closed my account in December of 2024 (again without my knowledge) due to a negative balance. They will not allow me to settle my account online given the account closure and are forcing us to pay administrative fees totaling over $100 on balances we never received notification on.
Governor Murphy passed a rule in 2023 that EZPASS could not charge violations if a customer had an active EZPASS account.
We have received multiple violations in the mail associated with tolls and I believe they intentionally closed our account to pursue these violations. EZ PASS won’t allow us to make our account whole, will not allow us to pay the balance, and charged me massive fees associated with tolls.
It seems like a play to scam the consumer with no recourse to correct it on the consumers side. Even had they not closed my account without my knowledge, The EZ PASS readers also never successfully capture the EZ PASS tag on the windshield. Causing a bill / balance to be sent in the mail with a violation. This is a headache and administrative burden on the customer.
I am filing a complaint because 1. EZ PASS customer service is sub par. You have to wait over an hour to reach someone to help you. 2. They perform actions on your account without due notice to the customer - and when they customer does not receive the notice it becomes the customers burden to pay above and beyond reasonable fees YET they are always somehow successfully able to notice a customer for a violation. And 3. EZPASS will not re-open my account until they collect their administrative fees.
