I am filing this complaint regarding GFL Environmentals failure to provide a detailed breakdown of charges under my service agreement. Despite multiple written requests, they have not explained how fuel and environmental fees were calculated for invoices from September 2022 through July 2025.Key points:Excessive and undisclosed fees: My July 2025 invoice included Base $115.37, Environmental $32.30, and Fuel $40.38a 129% increase from the original contract.Lack of transparency: GFL has refused to provide line-by-line documentation or the methodology behind these charges.Misrepresentation of contract terms / coercion: GFL asserts that my contract automatically renewed until 2030. They also stated that services would not be canceled if I hire an attorney, which I view as coercive language intended to discourage me from pursuing my consumer rights.Refusal to honor cancellation requests: Their statements create pressure and imply I must waive my rights in order to resolve the ************* Basis:Michigan Consumer Protection Act (MCL *******): Prohibits unfair, deceptive, or unconscionable business practices, including failure to provide required billing information and coercive practices.Michigan Automatic Renewal Law (PA 408 of 2010): Requires clear disclosure of all fees, surcharges, and auto-renewal terms; buried or undisclosed charges are unenforceable.Consumer Rights: Consumers are entitled to accurate, detailed billing information. I have been with your company and prior Waste Industries for 21 years. In that time I have been late on my bill twice. Both instances I have not received the original bill I am assuming due to the post office. One of the late items was the bill for Aug - Oct. I did not receive the original bill and on August 1st I received a late notice.I immediately paid the bill from online banking. Due to the way *** receives online payments my bank issued a check #****** with a deliver date of August 7th. I watched for this check to clear the bank. As it had not cleared on August 12th I called the office to make sure I was not going to have any issues with the collection of my waste. I was informed by the local office that there was not hold on my account and sometimes as the payments went to ********* there was a lag in posting. My waste would be picked up as usual. I did inform your representative that if the check had not cleared by the 15th that I would call in and make a phone payment. The representative did inform me that if that happened and the check was processed that I would have a credit on my account for the future. I was fine with this.On August 14th check #****** for GFL cleared my bank. I thought this was the end of my problem.August 18th I receive a letter from *********************** the letter is dated August 9th. Prior to my phone call to customer service at the local office. Apparently "****************** In. is a Debt Collector" First of all lets be very clear here they are trying to collect for the full invoice of $112.66 which is for Aug - Oct. "We are trying to collect a debt that you owe to GFL Environmental" How can I owe GFL for services not yet rendered?After 21 years of doing business with a company I am highly insulted by this letter. I am being sent to a collections company for three months trash pickups that have not been provided. In fact this was sent to the collections company after 1 unpaid pickup.Business Response

GFL Garbage collection has damaged our garage with their pickup arms. We have circumstantial evidence, pictures with measurements that fit exactly to the arms that pickup their trash. We are holding *** responsible. They will not take responsibility for their damages. We now have to replace our garage door.Business Response

We have requested cancellation of our service as we are not regularly receiving the services we are actively paying for.We have had a contract for over a year with ***. When we started, there were were multiple derelict totes on our property. We asked for them to be removed, especially once the weather became hot and they began to stink. We advised that we were receiving customer complaints and it was hurting our business. We were assured multiple times it would be looked into; as of a year later, they were still present. It took threatening to file a nuisance complaint before they were removed. Unfortunately, when those cans were removed, they also removed on of the two totes that were ours. This was noticed on July 25th, at which point I emailed our representative. We received no response for 14 days, and only after I emailed that day stating we were cancelling our service. I then received an email several hours later stating that we were under contract. A new tote was delivered the following week, but I again emailed that we would be cancelling our service. We have yet to hear back. The contract states that they have 10 days to "cure" any dispute, which did not happen in this case. We essentially went half a month without half of the service we are being charged for, despite reaching out immediately.Furthermore, they have missed several Friday pickups, most recently on May 16th and July 25th (made worse by the fact we only had one tote during the latter). Since Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays are our busiest days, this necessitated us keeping trash on property as we did not have a receptacle that would hold all of it. In addition to being an inconvenience, this is also unsanitary. We are again requesting cancellation of our service. I never thought garbage services would be something I had to devote so much time and effort to. We do not want this to be a bigger deal than it has to be, but are willing to move forward legally if need be.Business Response

*** has been service provider for garbage pickup for long period. 4 weeks ago they stopped picking up our already paid for 2nd can on weekly run. This week they failed to collect either can. Have had multiple work orders for the missed pickups over past 4 weeks and still waiting for this week's pick-up (2 days late and not holding out hope). Multiple calls to only number available to us. Call today was quite rude and told me driver has until 8:30 pm to pickup (time left in 48 hr window from latest workorder for missed pickup). *** has subbed out our area for pickup and since then pickup has failed, customer service is little help, and today was very rude. Clearly my problem isnt their problem. I have fired this provider but have paid for 2 months in advance that I expect to continue to have problems. I also expect a letter from my HOAS for keeping my garbage cans out past regular pickup date.I have asked for refunds for failed service and possibility of cancel contract early and refund for unused portion. I am rejecting this response because:Monday, August 25th, this company failed for the 5th week in a row to pick up our garbage. This service is paid for in advance and has required me to contact them each week to get pickup arranged. They did not reach out to me, I had to call them again. At that time, we agreed that service would be terminated, and a refund would be issued for the unused portion of the pre-paid amount. I should be refunded for the past month as well. I'll accept their response after the refund is received.

I am rejecting this response because: I will continue to reject these until a refund is received. 'Submitting a refund request' does not complete the process. I have no idea how long their 'refund request' process takes, how the refund will be processed, what method of payment will be used for the refund. It would be nice to have that communication. Once a refund is received for the services that were pre-paid but not provided, then I will accept these messages.

*** is the garbage service provider for my neighborhood. The kitchen trash pick up runs every Thursday morning and does an outstanding job. They are always on time! The recycle trash pick up is supposed to run every other week on Thursday, but seldom does. Occasionally they come on time. Sometimes they come Friday morning or Friday afternoon. Sometimes they dont come at all on the week they are scheduled to run. Such was the case two weeks ago. This means they sometimes end up coming only once per month. Their lack of sticking to a schedule causes my neighborhood to often be strewn and overrun with trash cans as well as trash that had spilled onto the ground from setting around several days a week, which is due to GFLs lack of responsibility. I have called to compliment and thank GFL when they have run on time, and Ive called to remind them and complain when theyve run late or not at all. Ive asked several times for management to call me. Nobody ever has. I have been with GFL four years or more and have always paid my bill on time. All I ask is that they provide their services on time on a regular basis. As I mentioned earlier, the kitchen trash is picked up in time once a week on time, every time. Why cant *** provide that same service every other week for its recycle trash pick up service? On August 15, 2025, *** skipped service to my home. Though my waste receptacle was placed curbside on Thursday evening (8/14/25), the driver intentionally skipped my home at 12:44 pm. Upon noticing, I called customer service at 1:36 and 3:41 pm. Both times, the *** customer service representative ensured me that communication was sent to the driver, who will be returning by EOD Friday (8/15) to correct. The driver never returned to correct the missed collection at my home, and my trash remained curbside all weekend. I reached out to ******************** again on 8/18/25 at 09:26 am, and I learned that a work order was never created. The representative created a work order to correct the missed service by the driver and would provide me with an update by ***. As no update had been provided, I again reached out to ******************** at 3: 27 pm on 8/18 and learned that the work order placed meant that my home would be serviced the following day (8/19/25), which was disappointing. Given that my home remained unserviced on 8/19/25, I followed up with ******************** at 2:19 pm to ask for additional information regarding my concerns and the escalation process. The representative shared that the work order was in the system and that the service extended until 7:30 pm. When the representative was asked what steps would be taken if my home remained unserviced after today, she shared that it would then be escalated to address my concerns about the missed service. This is a sheer act of poor customer service, and should not be at the consumer's expense. The driver intentionally did not perform the services GFL is contracted to complete, and there should not be this many roadblocks for contractual services GFL is obligated to perform.Business Response

GFL Environmental handles the garbage collection for my neighborhood. Many times over the course of the last year the garbage trucks discharges trash liquid throughout the neighborhood while collecting trash. Leaving a 2 foot wide puddle in front of everyones house and a trail of rancid drips to the next collection point. I have made many complaints directly to *** and spoke with a manager; however the issue remains. Its a health and safety issue for neighborhood. The puddles of rancid trash liquid attracts numerous flies and animals. It also has the development smelling like a dump in the summer heat until it rains.Business Response

We have had *********** for several years, and have had multiple times when trash pick up was 1-7 days late. We are currently going on 15 days with no trash pick up and the only thing we have gotten is an automated phone call with a useless apology and promise to pick up the trash by today (8/16/25). I am rejecting this response because: although someone did reach out, there was no formal resolution and no mention of refunding for services not provided in a timely manner. The company says they are working on a resolution but I would like to see a resolution first. Anytime this has happened in the past (although it has never been 15 days), theres always a promise of trying to correct the issue. I would like to hear and see a formal plan to correct the issue, and I would like a refund, if not in whole, definitely in part for the delayed service.
