A month ago, HR Bloch was supposed to send me a refund check for what I had paid them for their services. I requested for them to give me back my tax information, so I could file them somewhere else as I was not pleased with how they did my taxes. They were supposed to mail me a $304 check to my residence. I have made numerous calls to the office and the corporate office and several times they have assured me that my check is in the mail, but I have yet to receive it. I find this unacceptable as I have waited too long for them to send my refund check.

H & Block has done my taxes for years. We had an amendment on our 2019 taxes and apparently it changed our payment amount. Not only that the IRS was sending the letters to an old address, because that is the address H & R Block had on file. I asked for this to be updated and they finally updates that what once was a $2,000.00 bill turned into over $7,000.00. We always purchase the insurance that H & R Block offers. Finally just this year H & R Block settled our case with the IRS. Now on our 2024 tax return have finally got a refund and low and behold H & R Block took $593.00 out of our refund saying we didn't pay them that year. I gave them the copy of my taxes and it showed that I did. Thru all of this they offer to refund my 2024 payment back to me. I agreed. However this refund has been sitting in their pending since April 2025. I was informed by an employee on the pending status. Please all I want is my money they made a few error and I had to fight for everything to get processed to the IRS. H & R Block just throw their employee under the bus and they just do not care. Not once has anyone of management called me back to discuss this matter. Please help and thank you.Business Response

Fraudulent tax return was filed in my name. H&R Block sent the check for the fraudulent return to my house. Under advisement of H&R Block I sent the voided fraudulent check to their legal department. H&R Block never returned the funds for the fraudulent tax return to the IRS. Now the IRS is demanding the money from me. H&R Block has been very uncooperative in either retrieving the voided original check or returning the funds to IRS.Customer Answer

I do not wish for any refund in this matter. Only that H&R Block returns the funds for that fraudulent tax return to the IRS.Business Response

In 2023 I filed with an HR Block paid and never received my full refund. I’ve been waiting and trying to file since. I’ve called and emailed and went into the building and have received different instructions each time. I have two years of taxes that I have yet to receive. I do not feel I should have to pay again when I have yet to receive what I already paid for. No one can seem to help me this is getting unnecessarily long, I should have been gotten my taxes back. On 6/25/25 I DECLINED 3rd Party Consent form 7216 to Disclose my information to Offshore Support Providers prior to signing my approval of completed tax return for submission to IRS.
The response from tax advisor V. Vega was User Declined Overall Tax Return. I promptly responded I Am Not Declining Overall Tax Return, furthermore stating I Do Not Understand the
Consent Page and that is what I would like Removed.
On 6/27/25 I received response from V. Vega that she was unable to change it because it was given to me when she started. When in actuality I was not made aware of any consents until it came time to sign and approve tax return, therefore her response is not factual.
On 6/27/25 I called customer support and explained my situation and was assigned case number 25356920 and informed I would receive a phone call. ** ****** informed me he would remove the Consent and send it back to me for approval.
On 7/9/25 I again called customer support and updated my continued problem. I was told the case would be escalated.
On 7/17 I again called customer support and spoke with Jay who assigned me a new case number ********.
On 7/25/25 I spoke with Ben from customer support and explained my concerns of no action being taken and that according to the information provided by the IRS this Consent is Voluntary and there is no requirement to complete this form to engage in tax preparation services and if they are Delaying Filing my Return solely because I will not sign H&R Block may be in Violation of IRS Regulations and I may have to request a refund. Ben furthered the escalation informing me I would be contacted within 3 to 5 business days.

In March 2024, HR Block advised me to pay a penalty of $390 connected with my 2023 taxes to resolve an issue of Roth IRA overcontribution. I asked about the accuracy of this penalty, provided thorough and detailed information about my situation. At HR Block rep Amy Coupe's insistence, I paid the penalty.
I only realized there was a problem when I began filing my 2024 taxes in Feb. 2025 - for this reason, I am filing my complaint over 1 year from the initial problem, but less than one year of becoming aware of the problem. I kindly request your understanding.
In Feb. 2025, when I began filing my 2024 taxes, I encountered a $390 penalty for the second time for the same issue: a Roth overcontribution. I did not pay the second penalty. I contacted HR Block. At first, Amy insisted the second penalty was an error. She then acknowledged that she misadvised me in 2024: in fact, I did not need to pay the penalty; I could have withdrawn the overcontribution amount.
In April 2025, Amy's manager ****** Hrabovsky reached out to me. She confirmed that the tax advice I received from HR Block in 2024 was incorrect. She refunded the 2023 tax prep fees of $180. She then submitted a claim on my behalf to have HR Block reimburse me for the $390 IRS penalty. Thanks to Amy's involvement, I avoided paying the second $390 penalty; however, I have yet to be reimbursed for the first $390 penalty.
In May 2025, HR Block headquarters denied the request for reimbursement of the $390, denying responsibility.
I have attached full correspondence indicating that HR Block was at fault, even by their own admission. Additionally, I provided very thorough information about my situation to HR Block at every step. In fact, HR Block initially insisted that the second $390 penalty was a technical error. After my insistence, they recognized that they had made a mistake.
I would like to request reimbursement of the $390 penalty that I paid due to HR Block's incorrect advice.Business Response

I am rejecting this response because: H&R Block presents themselves as professional tax experts, and they advertises a guarantee. Based on their response to my complaint, their advertisements are at best misleading and at worst intentionally false. I've provided four detailed reasons for my rejection below:
First, 2023 was the first tax year I ever hired someone to for tax services. H&R Block presents themselves as professional tax experts and advertises a guarantee. Based on this, I decided to pay for the services of one of their tax professionals. I had no idea that that they would claim that their guarantee did not extend to poor tax advice they offer. Had I know that, I would not have used their services.
Second, it seems H&R Block does not contest their error; rather, they claim that they are not financially responsible for their errors. Again, to a reasonable person, the guarantee and expertise H&R Block advertises would seem to extend to such situations. Based on H&R Block’s response, they seem to misrepresent themselves, mislead with their advertisement, and potentially willfully engage in false advertisement to accrue profit.
Third, their recommendation that I contact ****** is not made in good faith. ****** was very helpful, and we were in regular contact in April. However, in April ****** said she would only be available through early May. Indeed, I have not received a response from ****** since May 2, despite emailing her on May 10 and May 16. (I can provide these emails as well). I assume that ******’s employment schedule follows the tax season. H&R Block knows this, yet again, they have provided a suggested resolution in poor faith.
Lastly, I have spent 15-20 hours of my time, not only pursuing this complaint, but simply trying to correct the issue with my 2023 taxes in order to file my 2024 taxes. When I attempted to engage the services of an H&R Block tax representative, beginning in February 2025, to correct the problem with my 2023 taxes and file my 2024 taxes: one rep stopped responding to me; a second never replied at all once assigned to my case; and two others informed me my tax situation was too complicated and they were unable to assist. (All of this correspondence is reflected in my H&R Block portal, which I can also provide). At least four H&R Block reps thus refused to do my 2024 taxes and provided no referral to someone more experienced. Additionally, because it took until May 2025 to sort out this issue, I had to pay a higher price for tax services, as I had missed the discounts offered when I began the process in February 2025.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey ************Business Response

Thanks so much for your help in this matter. Are there any mechanisms to flag this case for appropriate attorneys general or similar? I remain concerned that this is a pattern of fraud on the part of HR Block, and would like to bring it to the attention of appropriate authorities.

I used H&R Block for tax preparation. On April 11, after setting up direct payment myself and also calling my preparer to provide my information to set up direct payment, I asked for confirmation by email that the amount I owed the federal government would be paid directly from my debit account. On April 12—ahead of the April 15 tax deadline—I received written confirmation from H&R that I would be directly debited for federal taxes. I subsequently was issued an IRS notice in June that the taxes were never paid and that I now also owe penalties and interest. I was traveling and did not receive the notice. Once received, I promptly paid the taxes, penalties, and interest and notified H&R. I asked that they reimburse me for the penalties and interest since they represented that there would indeed be a direct debit and that it was "all ok" (see provided email). H&R said that they would only reimburse me from the initial IRS notice, not from the total penalties and interest owed. Because I was traveling and was told by H&R it was handled, I had no reason to be on the lookout for the notice. I disputed their response-which came after I provided screenshots from the IRS website and laid out the math for what I had to paid-and was told that I would need to contact the IRS for a new letter that reflected penalties and interest at the time I paid. I called the IRS, and after waiting on hold for almost two hours, was told they cannot issue a new letter but that the information is available in IRS transcripts. I provided the information and transcripts from the IRS to H&R and they still refuse to process the refund (see attached). At this point, between the mishandling and misrepresenting that things were handled, I would like not only payment in full for the $87.12 I had to pay in penalties and interest but also a refund of the $415 I paid them for the poor service. Their indifference to make things right has been incredibly disappointing, frustrating, and a waste of my time.Customer Answer

H&R block is suppose to stand by their work and the company didn't get me back my full tax refund in 2022. The accountant who originally did my taxes did not include my other son, therefore I was shorted money in my tax return. I am also a caregiver for my one son and the accountant did not know how to fix the 2022 tax return (documents show what the new accountant did) when I brought them back to the Wayne NJ office this past year in April/May. H&R Block's policy is that if they don't get you back all the money in your tax return that you are refunded for their services. They don't specify how long you have to get a refund so that should still stand for today. H&R Block refuses to refund me the $422 I paid for the services and would not pay the $150 for the new accountant I had to use to amend my 2022 taxes. They told me it's been too long of a time for a refund from them but yet the IRS will be refunding me the money that I lost out on in 2022 tax return. I would like a refund for the money I paid for the services and for H&R Block to pay the $150 that I had to pay a new accountant because NONE of their accountants could figure out how to amend them, so I had to put out more money to get my taxes amended. I had 3 years to amend my tax return with the IRS therefore H&R Block can refund me for services not rendered. As shown, the refund between what I received back in my taxes was a very little amount compared to the amended 2022 tax return. If anything else is needed, please advise me and I would be happy to oblige.Customer Answer

Dear Better Business Bureau,
In response to the client's complaint, we sincerely apologize for any inconveniences. We have carefully reviewed the concerns raised and, after a thorough investigation, determined that the tax return was prepared accurately based on the information provided at the time of filing. Regarding the request for a refund, our Maximum Refund Guarantee specifies that claims must be submitted during the calendar year in which the return was prepared. In this case, the client's request was made outside of that timeframe and therefore does not meet the eligibility criteria. The client also referenced our accuracy guarantee by including a screenshot in the complaint files. However, the version provided pertains to our DIY platform, which applies to self-prepared returns. Since this return was completed in-office by a tax professional, the applicable accuracy guarantee is different. For in-office filings, the guarantee states that if an error is made, we will reimburse any resulting penalties and interest. It does not include a refund of tax preparation fees. In this particular situation, there were no penalties or interest incurred, so the guarantee does not apply. With all factors considered, we believe the matter has been addressed thoroughly and fairly, and we consider the case closed. We assure you that
we take our clients' concerns seriously and make every effort to resolve
matters thoroughly and fairly.Sincerely,
H&R Block

Dear Better Business Bureau,
Upon further review, it was determined that the client prepared both the original tax return and the first amended return independently, without professional assistance. During this process, the client incorrectly reported $1,000 in Other Miscellaneous Income and $1,600 in W-2 income as a credit rather than income. As a result, the IRS has issued a notice regarding penalties and interest.
Subsequently, the client sought assistance from H&R Block. We prepared the second amended return, accurately reporting the $1,000 in Other Miscellaneous Income and $1,600 in W-2 income in their appropriate categories. This correction resulted in a balance due to the IRS. The client will need to contact the IRS for assiatance regadring the balance due.

Dear Better Business Bureau,
After further review, we confirmed that H&R Block did not complete the client's original 2024 tax return. The client will need to contact the IRS directly regarding the notice to verify whether the second amended return, completed by H&R Block, has been received. If the IRS has processed it, the penalties and interest may be lower than what is currently stated in the notice.

We filed our 2024 taxes online through the Boise, Idaho H&R Block location. We started with ********* ************** then were transferred to ****** *******, who completed and submitted our return in mid-April. After filing, both individuals became unresponsive. We sent multiple follow-ups with no reply.
Weeks passed with no refund. Then we received two IRS letters stating we each owed $395—despite selecting the option for this to be withheld from our refund. When we contacted the Logan, Utah office (our closest physical location), they refused to assist. Another office told us our return was filed in Boise, but they couldn’t help either.
We finally reached out to the Utah State Tax Commission, who discovered that our return had been filed using the wrong tax year, 2023 instead of 2024.
To make matters worse, the H&R Block customer service line told us we’d need to purchase additional software to amend the mistake ourselves, despite this being their error, not ours.
We have been passed from office to office with no resolution and no accountability. Every location near us is now closed for the season, and we are stuck with unresolved tax issues, out-of-pocket costs, and no support from the people we paid to help us.
We are requesting:
1. That our amended return be handled immediately at no cost.
2. A refund of the additional $300 we had to pay to fix H&R Block’s error, and
3. A formal response from H&R Block regarding the lack of professionalism and communication.
If we do not hear back, we will escalate this to corporate and take further action.Business Response

Better Business Bureau:
I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me. All I wanted from the beginning was an actual apology. I don't feel like starting off with that on both the corporate end and the agents end would have been hard. A simple apology goes a long way.
Sincerely,
