I completed my taxes with HR block, first by self preparing then paying extra for "tax professional review." The entire process has been done incorrectly by HR block and cost me much extra time and money. Firstly, when you submit your taxes they state they file an automatic extension until October, to allow time for tax professional review. I then received a bill from NY State for filing late despite HR block stating I had an extension. I am disputing this extra charge but I am not sure it will be accepted as it is very difficult to get any official documentation from HR block other than what it says on the homepage about the extension. Additionally, the "tax professionals" who reviewed my returns made multiple serious errors that I had to catch and request re-review. The first error would have cost me many thousands of dollars (they had my split state income incorrect), the second review, several thousand (they had me listed as a New York City resident). I had to schedule numerous calls and meetings to get these rectified. I am still not certain their final numbers are correct but it was close enough to my own total owed that I gave up. Additionally, when you initially submit your self-prepared taxes HR block directs you to a third party payment website for the IRS, so I paid the federal amount due that was on my self-prepared return. Upon the tax pro review they came up with a higher number, which they then automatically deduct and send to the federal government, such that I have overpaid the federal government about 1500 dollars and I am not sure how to get that money returned, but hoping the IRS will realize the mistake and return the excess once the taxes are officially filed. I would like HR block to refund the "tax pro" review fee and any late fees due to the not filing the extension correctly, as I don't feel paying the extra professional review fee helped in any way and actually made things worse.Customer Answer

Dear Better Business Bureau,
I am writing to formally request immediate attention to a long-standing issue stemming from an error made by your Fort Bliss, Texas, office when preparing my 2019 tax return. I currently reside in Virginia, and when I sought assistance from your Fort Belvoir office nearly nine months ago, I was referred back to Fort Bliss due to their involvement in the original filing. This referral has resulted in significant inconvenience and financial harm, as I am now forced to work with an office located two time zones away.
Despite repeated attempts to engage the Fort Bliss office, I have received no response to my calls. As a result of the uncorrected error, I have been charged more than $4,000 in late fees and penalties. The lack of support and accountability from your offices has left me with no recourse but to elevate this matter to your attention.
I respectfully request the following:
• Immediate review and correction of the 2019 tax return.
• Full explanation of the cause of the error and steps taken to address it.
• Assistance in disputing or reducing the late fees and penalties incurred as a direct result of H&R Block’s mistake.
• A designated point of contact within your organization who can facilitate resolution and communicate reliably.
I chose H&R Block expecting accuracy and professionalism, and I am deeply disappointed by the lack of follow-through and responsiveness. I hope this letter prompts swift action to resolve the matter in an equitable manner.Business Response

To Whom It May Concern,
I recently received notification indicating that the complaint filed against H&R Block has been marked as resolved. While I appreciate the progress made thus far and remain actively engaged with a company representative, I must clarify that the matter has not yet reached a final resolution.
As of today, July 31, 2025, I continue to work collaboratively toward an equitable outcome, and I remain optimistic. However, given that the issue is still pending, I respectfully request that the complaint remain open until a definitive resolution has been achieved.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Report on Misconduct and Inaccuracies by H&R Block (April–July 2025)
Summary of Complaint:
This report documents a pattern of negligence, breach of duty, and misleading business practices by H&R Block and its representatives between April and June 2025 during the preparation of my 2024 federal and state tax returns.
Despite my timely and diligent submission of all required tax documentation and consistent cooperation throughout the process, H&R Block:
• Failed to deliver accurate tax filings, containing multiple factual errors (e.g., fictitious income, incorrect address, and incorrect license numbers).
• Did not respond in a timely or professional manner, often ignoring emails and messages for days or weeks at a time.
• Missed critical deadlines, including failing to file an IRS extension, exposing me to possible penalties through no fault of my own.
• Repeatedly miscommunicated, including assigning new staff who lacked basic awareness of my case history and asking redundant or irrelevant questions.
• Advertised peer-reviewed, accurate services but failed to uphold these standards, constituting misrepresentation under consumer protection law.
• Refused to accept accountability or answer questions, including unprofessional remarks from a manager that made good-faith resolution impossible.
These actions constitute a failure to perform services with reasonable care, a violation of the trust inherent in professional tax services, and potential violations of state and federal consumer protection statutes. I am seeking appropriate remedies, including potential reimbursement of fees, compensation for damages resulting from their delay, and a formal investigation into their business practices.Business Response

This is a follow-up to a prior BBB complaint against H&R Block at 180-16 Hillside Avenue, Jamaica, NY 11432, regarding a serious tax filing error.
On April 11, 2025, I paid $345 for tax preparation. The preparer, Nabidul Haque, made an error that caused me to overpay the IRS by $3800. I was told it had been corrected and an amended return (1040-X) was filed. Based on this, I expected the issue was resolved.
Following my first BBB complaint, H&R Block refunded the $345 — confirming the error. However, I have since confirmed through the IRS that no amended return was ever filed, and my IRS account still shows I owe money. I overpaid the IRS and they owe me money.
I emailed the original office — no response. I also scheduled a phone appointment through H&R Block for a different location on July 7, which was completely missed — no call, no notice, no follow-up. This is now the second time I’ve been let down while trying to fix an error I did not cause.
This has caused prolonged financial and emotional stress. I’ve spent months chasing a resolution that should have been handled professionally from the start.
I am requesting:
1. A formal acknowledgment from H&R Block of their failure to file the amendment.
2. Immediate, no-cost filing of the corrected return at a competent location.
3. Internal accountability for the repeated breakdowns in service and communication
I want H&R Block to formally acknowledge their failure to file my amended tax return and take full responsibility for the error. I am requesting that a properly trained representative file the corrected return (1040-X) immediately and at no cost to me. I also request that this case be reviewed by corporate to prevent further negligence or miscommunication. I do not want to deal with the original office again.Customer Answer

I was a federal government employee living overseas and used H&R Block Expat Taxes to file my tax returns. I also paid extra for an agent to review my tax preparation to ensure accuracy. After an IRS audit, I received a bill for approximately $14,000, including penalties and fees.
When I contacted H&R Block to utilize their audit protection service—which I had paid for—they informed me that I had failed to consistently identify myself as a federal employee in some parts of my filing, although I had done so in others.
I want to emphasize that my Leave and Earnings Statements (LES) from the federal government, along with the EIN, were uploaded as part of my tax submission. Moreover, I had specifically paid for a professional review to verify the accuracy of my filing.
Now, H&R Block insists that I am responsible for the IRS charges and has ceased responding to my emails and requests for assistance.
I have filed taxes for three years and have been audited twice, which suggests that I may owe additional amounts related to a tax credit I previously received.Customer Answer

We used this company to do our taxes. We first started out at the Stoneham, MA location. After constantly trying to get in touch with the office to find out about our taxes, on the day that taxes were due, we were finally contacted tell us that we owed $3,000 in taxes and that they were going to file for an extension. After the extension, it was weeks that we tried to get in touch with the Stoneham office to find out the status. Either no one answered the phone, or we were told that they were working on it. After getting nowhere, we made an appointment with the Saugus office to see if they could help. They got our information and were told that these would be done quickly. Again, after numerous calls and messages, we've gotten anything resolved. As of 6/30/25, we spoke to someone who told us that the person doing our taxes was not in the office and that that person had all our paperwork. AGAIN, we were told that someone would get back to us on 7/1/25 but no one ever did.
So H&R block has all of our information that we can't get back because the person who's doing our taxes is not in the office or that they don't get back to us.Business Response

I filed my 2021, 2022 and 2023 taxes with the H&R Block in Ansonia, CT 06401. I paid for the "Peace of mind," in an effort to protect myself. I had to utilize a CPA for 2024 for personal reasons that are beyond the scope of this complaint. However the CPA compared my 2024 taxes to my 2023 taxes and pointed out a few errors made by person who prepared my 2023 taxes. 1) I had asked to file single head of house hold for 2022 and 2023, she did not file it for me this way, this cost me more money in my return. 2) I had an HSA for 2023, I gave her the form. She did not include this even though it can only be used for medical reasons. 3) I had stocks that there was no exchange of monies. I did not buy any stocks, sell and stocks or recieve any dividends, but the preparer should have still placed the financial info on my taxes.
I asked **** ***** the District supervisor to have my 2023 taxes addended and H&R Block wants to charge me for their mistakes. Their errors cost me money. I have discussed this with other members of the H&R block team in Hamden and Orange, and all state that I will be charged for them to addend their mistakes.Customer Answer

BBB Business Profiles are provided solely to assist you in exercising your own best judgment. BBB asks third parties who publish complaints, reviews and/or responses on this website to affirm that the information provided is accurate. However, BBB does not verify the accuracy of information provided by third parties, and does not guarantee the accuracy of any information in Business Profiles.
When considering complaint information, please take into account the company's size and volume of transactions, and understand that the nature of complaints and a firm's responses to them are often more important than the number of complaints.
BBB Business Profiles generally cover a three-year reporting period, except for customer reviews. Customer reviews posted prior to July 5, 2024, will no longer be published when they reach three years from their submission date. Customer reviews posted on/after July 5, 2024, will be published indefinitely unless otherwise voluntarily retracted by the user who submitted the content, or BBB no longer believes the review is authentic. BBB Business Profiles are subject to change at any time. If you choose to do business with this company, please let them know that you checked their record with BBB.
As a matter of policy, BBB does not endorse any product, service or business. Businesses are under no obligation to seek BBB accreditation, and some businesses are not accredited because they have not sought BBB accreditation. BBB charges a fee for BBB Accreditation. This fee supports BBB's efforts to fulfill its mission of advancing marketplace trust.
