1 starI wish I would have read the reviews prior to renting from Hertz.I tried them for the first time while visiting the Bay Area the first week of June. We didn't have a great experience when we flew in after midnight. There was one employee working and one on lunch. The one on the clock was helping a customer while we waited. She let her coworker know I was waiting and his response was "I'm still on lunch" as he watched tv (I could actually see him). It was not busy at all and he could have taken the time to clock in to help us at we waited for over 20 minutes. It's not like he could not have resumed his lunch afterwards. I was charged the weekly rate although I had it for six days. I didn't stress about it until after I received the charges for the tolls. We went through the tolls on two separate days (one toll each day round trip). I was charged $35.98 and I thought $16 a day was ridiculous, so I looked into it. The tolls were actually $8.00 per day, which is fine, but $19.98 in fees? I called Plate Pass and they told me Hertz charges $9.99 for each day you use the tolls. Plate Pass understands that this is way too much and without me asking, they offered me a 50% off. Do you understand how shady this has to be for them to instantly take half off without? The last straw with Hertz was charging a weekly rate for six days. I messaged them about this. I was told they automatically charge the weekly rate for anything over five days. I wasn't asked about this and there's nothing in the contract that states this. I wanted the breakdown for the daily rate and all the representative could say that the rate changes all the time and that they could not give me the daily rate. I will never use Hertz again, with their shady business practices, I understand why the company is having financial difficulties. It almost seems as if they are scamming people.Review fromAlex P

1 starCustomer service is none existent. Hertz has made it impossible for the customer to recieve the attention they deserve. I attempted to call the branch that I recieved the rental from and their automated system is absolutely pointless. It did not assist me with my billing issue. It would not connect me to an actual person. Called a customer service number from Hertz and was bounced around from one department to another. Had to wait what felt like a life time between departments to finally answer. My issue still hasn't been resolved. If I knew how horrible the customer service was for this company, would have never agreed to rent a vehicle from them.Review fromPeaches B

1 starDO NOT RENT FROM THE HERTZ LOCATION ON ***************************************** ******** AZ. THEY ARE SO INCONSIDERATE ITS RIDICULOUS. MY DEALERSHIP MADE THE MISTAKE OF SENDING MY RENTAL TO THE WRONG LOCATION, I STEPPED OUTSIDE TO MAKE THEM AWARE OF THEIR ERROR TO HAVE A PRIVATE CONVERSATION AT 4:50PM THE BRANCHED CLOSED AT 5PM. THEY LOCKED THE DOOAND SAID I COULD NOT WAIT INSIDE. KEEP IN MIND IT WAS 114 DEGREES ON JUNE 18TH IN ******** AZ AT THE TIME..THE INCONSIDERATE RUDE MANAGER NOR THE RUDE SALES ASSOCIATE OFFERED ME A BOTTLE OF WATER, WHICH THEY HAD IN THE LOBBY, THEY THEY OFFERED TO US WAITING TO BE HELPED IN THE INSIDE. THEY ALSO PUT ANOTHER CUSTOMER OUT THAT THEY MESSED UP HIS RESERVATION ON. HOW INHUMANE IS THIS. THIS LOCATION NEEDS TO BE CLOSED DOWN, SINCE THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO TREAT PEOPLE.Review fromEric S

1 starNo one at the counter with 30 people waiting. Express Return box overflowing with returned cars. Several people saying there have been multiple problems with customer service. Im not sure the franchisee owner should be allowed to run a business.Review fromSharlene C

1 starI am not even giving Hertz Rental Car one star, not to mention how rude some of their staff in customer service staff are. When I turned my car in not only did they charge me an additional "cleaning fee" as they call it plus I was told that I would be billed in full and they wouldn't take partial payments, but I was ok with that. In the meantime since I was going to have to wait for the bill to arrive I went ahead and paid my mortgage and insurance bills because of my car repairs taking so long I had to push back payments on my mortgage, car and homeowners insurance and the payment on my phone. Come to find out when I checked my account later the same day and they had already taken out more than I had expected and I had already paid the other bills that I had put off because of the repairs to my car. This situation left me over $400 in the hole and an additional $80 in overdraft fees I was shocked, not only did they tell me I would be billed for the full amount but I felt like they straight to my face and took more then I had in the bank leaving me 400+ in the negative. When I called the company they told me there was nothing that they could do for me because I still had a balance remaining, I told them that what they did not only was bad business practice but also unethical and would be looking at other options to resolve the issue. My advice is not to rent from this company unless you have the extra funds to cover any surprise fees that they may come up with also when I returned the car there was 3/4 of a tank of gas and when I had originally picked it up it was on 1/2 of a tank if I had brought it back with less then a 1/2 of a tank they would have charged me $9.99 per gallon I couldn't even get a credit for that. 1 starWe just recently returned from vacationing in ******************, *****. We flew into ***************** and rented a car from Hertz Rental car. We returned the car at the airport on the morning of 6/7/25 prior to our departure flight. The agency was not yet open so we parked the vehicle in the Hertz parking lot and dropped the keys in a deposit box at the counter.We received our bill via email a day later and saw that we were being charged an additional $500 for outside washing! I called the Hertz office at the airport regarding this and they mentioned it was an additional fee for smoking in the car. I proceeded to tell them that we are nonsmokers and never smoked in the car. Their response was that 2 employees witnessed ashes in the car and the smell of smoke. I spoke to the location at the airport twice and called Hertz Corporate and neither is willing to budge on crediting back our $500.00. DOESN'T THAT STINK!It's interesting that other customers have reported the exact same experience which tells me they are intentionally ripping off people. 1 starBuyer Beware. I don't know that I've ever left a review but I want others to know my experience before they rent with Hertz. We recently rented a car for a wedding in **** on the Hertz website the week before we left and prepaid. When you prepay your impression is that there will not be any additional charges. Having rented before with other companies in ***** we expected some additional fees but when Hertz Rome charged us more than DOUBLE what we prepaid we were blown away. Our prepaid amount was $226.59 for 4 days returned with a full tank. Two days after returning home we were billed an additional $361.69. The receipt was in Italian and after translating we were charged for things we never asked for: navigation, theft insurance, along with "automobile charges" we have no idea about. After many emails back and forth concerning the bill the answer was the same. "We have reviewed your rental receipt and find that everything is in order." It was almost as if it was AI generated. 1 starI would not even give a one star... We rented a car online and paid online. when picking up the car, the line was long, attendants' were rude and we couldn't get the app to skip the line to work, Several others had the same problem. When checking out, the *** practically forced the extra insurance down our throats. After several minutes of telling her we didn't want or need it and feeling she was not taking no for an answer, we agreed just to get on our way as we were tired and it was 2 am. 1 starI rented a car for one day and returned it on the exact date, time, and location specified in the rental agreement. However, I was charged for three days instead of one. I visited your Vestal, New York office to resolve the issue, but the staff there were extremely rude. They told me that returns are not accepted if the office is closed, and that I would be charged from Saturday through Monday. This directly contradicts what I was told by the employee at JFK Airport, who clearly stated I could return the car on Saturday by 4:00 PM without extra charges. That return time was also printed on my rental agreement. I’ve tried calling customer service several times, but no one ever answers the phone. I contacted customer care via Facebook Messenger and was frustrated by the incorrect information they gave. They claimed I returned the car at 6:00 PM, even though I dropped it off two hours earlier. After a long exchange, they offered to charge me for one extra day instead of two. This is still unacceptable—I was clearly told at JFK there would be no extra charges, and my rental agreement confirms the return time. 1 starI rented a vehicle from Hertz for a family trip to Orlando with my children. While driving, we stopped at a rest area and ate in the car. Shortly afterward, we noticed roaches inside the vehicle. Initially, I thought they may have come in from outside. However, later that evening, we discovered more than 20 roaches crawling throughout the car, including near my children. This was a serious health and safety hazard. Had any of the roaches crawled on me while I was driving, it could have caused an accident. I had to drive in fear to the nearest airport and spend over an hour dealing with the issue, including missing dinner with my kids. I believe the car may have been infested from a previous rental or was not cleaned properly before being given to me. This is absolutely unacceptable and unprofessional for a major rental company. I am seeking a full investigation, an apology, and appropriate compensation for the health risk, emotional distress, and inconvenience this caused my family.
