I am filing a complaint regarding WordPress.coms unfair billing practices. I was charged approximately $326 annually for about five years for an account that was created as a trial and was never active. The account had no published site, no content, no traffic, and no usage at any point. I did not knowingly consent to maintaining a paid subscription, nor was I reasonably notified that a trial account had converted into a long-term paid plan with automatic annual renewals.I never received clear, conspicuous reminder emails or billing notices that would have reasonably alerted me to ongoing renewals of a $300+ annual charge. This billing continued silently for years and was only discovered during a financial audit.Charging customers for years for an unused trial account without meaningful notice or transparency is unreasonable and deceptive. This practice relies on customer inattention rather than informed consent.Resolution requested:A full refund of all charges for this unused account Written confirmation that the account is permanently closedBusiness Response

Hi there,
Im sorry for the unexpected charges, and I completely understand why you have made this complaint after discovering multiple years of charges for a service you werent actively using.
Based on what youve described, I suspect the core issue may be that the email address on file for the account isnt one you actively monitor. WordPress.com sends billing notifications and renewal reminders, and we also send receipts for successful charges. We also provide a clear, documented path to request refunds here: REMOVED
Those emails are sent to the email address associated with your account, so if that inbox isnt being monitored (or if messages are being filtered), its possible you wouldnt have seen our reminders.
Could you please confirm the email address currently associated with your account by logging in here: REMOVED
If needed, you can update it to an address you have access to so we can reliably communicate with you going forward.
Regarding automatic renewals: WordPress.com plans renew automatically by default to prevent service interruptions (for example, a site suddenly becoming unavailable to visitors without the owner realizing). That said, auto-renew is optional and can be turned off at any time. More details are here: REMOVED
At this point, it looks like auto-renew remained enabled and the renewal/receipt emails were not seen, which unfortunately led to several years of charges you did not intend to continue. Im truly sorry for the upset this has caused.
Next steps: I reviewed the account and can confirm the subscription is now cancelled, so no future charges will occur. Ive also sent an email to the address currently on filehowever, since Im concerned you may not see it, please update your account email address using the steps here: REMOVEDand then initiate a new support chat so we can continue assisting you directly through the correct contact.
If youd like to permanently close the account, you can do so here: REMOVED
Once you confirm the correct email address and were in contact with you via email, we can assist you further.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
REMOVED

This is a chain of email correspondences with WordPress employees that began on 12/11/25 to the present. No employee has responded to refund my money and rectify this issue since WordPress incorrectly removed $74.20 wrongfully from my account today. On the REMOVEDaccount yesterday, 1/5/26, it demonstrates my subscription expired on 1/4/26. I am requesting my full refund in its entirety. Please review attached documents. I prefer email contact.Business Response

Hi there,
We would like to confirm that the automatic purchase of the renewal of the E-commerce plan for REMOVED(at US$74.20) was refunded on 2026-01-07.
A refund takes about 7 to 10 business days to show up on the bank or credit card statement for the original purchase method. The bank can provide more specific information on when to expect the funds and how they will appear.
If the refund does not appear on the account within that time, we can assist further with locating it by providing an ARN tracking number for the transfer.

I am rejecting this response because:While WordPress/Automattic Inc. stated the refund has been processed, the company also mentioned in their follow up email that a "Happiness Engineer" would contact me directly to discuss the various options requested in the downgrading of my account. As has been the standard of subpar customer service of this company, this has not yet occurred at the time of my communication with the BBB, and is still awaited. The company should also apologize for inconvenience to the consumer as the email communications show an extensive chain of requests which were not executed prior to my being forced to contact the BBB. Thank you very much for your assistance in this regard.

Subject: Urgent Complaint: WordPress Refusing to Unlock Transfer Code and Placing Hold - Immediate Assistance Needed Dear Better Business Bureau,I am writing to file a formal complaint against WordPress regarding their refusal to unlock my domain transfer code, which is critically holding up my business operations. I need this resolved as soon as possible.Details of the Issue:Company: WordPress (domain registrar)Problem: They are not authorising the release of my transfer authorisation code (EPP code) for my domain.Additional Issue: They have placed an unexplained hold on the account, preventing any action.Impact: This is blocking my ability to transfer the domain to my new provider (Webador), delaying the launch of my pet services website (REMOVED), which is essential for my small business in REMOVED, REMOVEDI have contacted WordPress multiple times requesting the code, but they refuse to provide it or explain the hold adequately. This violates standard REMOVEDtransfer policies, which require registrars to release EPP codes upon request after a 60-day lock period. I cannot wait until Jan 18 to get this released to me. What I Need:Immediate intervention to force WordPress to unlock the transfer code.Resolution within REMOVEDhours, as I have clients booking services starting January 2 Thank you for your prompt assistance. I would like this to be resolved asap Sincerely,REMOVEDOwner, Care Me Pet ServicesBusiness Response

Hello REMOVED,
Your domain REMOVEDwas registered with WordPress.com on Nov 15, 2025. As per the REMOVEDrules, the domain is to remain on hold for 60 days from registration before the domain can be transferred to another registrar. This is a rule that is beyond our power to overrule, and every registrar needs to follow it. The hold gets lifted in 19 days, that is on Jan 14, 2026. I do see that you have already pointed the domain to the REMOVEDaddress REMOVEDusing the A records, which is the correct way to point the domain elsewhere, while you wait for the domain to be released from the holdYou can transfer the domain to your new registrar after Jan 14, 2026, as the domain will be released, and you'll receive the REMOVEDcode that you'll need to transfer it. I hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any questions or need anything else.

I am rejecting this response because I see no valid reason why the domain must be locked. This is my business account, and I paid for this domain myself. I am the one requesting the transferplease authenticate me and assist with the transfer instead of repeatedly pushing rules and policies.
I do not agree with your statement regarding these rules. Please revisit this issue and help me complete the full domain transfer. I no longer want to go back and forth with WordPressI have had enough.
Additionally, the Bark theme preview looked perfect, but after paying over $70, that same design is not being applied. I feel like I paid for nothing.
I am extremely disappointed and dissatisfied with your business and the service provided therefore I want to have no more connection and I want my domain to be transferred and have no further contact with your company.
Sincerely,
REMOVEDBusiness Response
Date: 01/08/2026
Hello,
I want you to know that we take your concerns seriously here at WordPress.com, and we prioritize finding a solution that works best for your goals.
We can begin with your domain, REMOVED. The domain itself is still within under transfer lock, which is standard for the first 60-days as after the domain is registered. This is not WordPress.com policy, but an official policy of REMOVED, who manages .ca domains, and it can not be overwritten. You can reference their policy page here, and I can also confirm this is the policy for other domains at well, not only .ca domains.
I understand your frustration at feeling as though you do not have control over the domain you paid for, but I want to assure that the control over the domain is still in your hands. This transfer lock does not prevent you from taking action; the domain can still be connected to your new host Webador, and the REMOVEDrecords can still be managed through your WordPress.com dashboard to make any changes that you require. I'm happy to confirm that your domain has successfully been connected to your new site using A records, which loads correctly in my view. If you would like to share more about how the transfer specifically is impacting your site, we can take a look and help to recommend some specific options. I know you mentioned you wanted to avoid further back and forth, you can also reference our guide to mange your REMOVEDrecords here.
The transfer lock will lift on January 14, 2026, at which point you will be able to unlock and transfer the domain to Webador as needed. Please know that the domain will then be set under another 60-day transfer lock at Webador, as is standard after a domain transfer.
As for the theme Bark, you have options here as well. I can see that the theme has been successfully applied to your site, and the theme formatting and layout is in effect. If you mean that the design from the theme demo content is not applied automatically, you are correct. The theme demo is shown using the Blog Home template, which takes effect when you have updated your site settings to show your recent posts on the Home Page. You can set this up in your site Dashboard by going to Settings > Reading. You can then change the Homepage Displays setting to show 'Your latest posts', which would ensure that the demo Home page took effect.
You would then be able to update the Blog Home template by going to Appearance > Editor. In the Editor, select Templates from the list of options; you can then select the Blog Home template from the list, and begin to update the demo content with your own. We have a guide on working with the default Home page here, and our team is always ready to help advise if you have any questions while you work.
I hope that this has helped to address your concerns. Your domain is connected successfully to your Webador site, and can be transferred in less than a week, and you currently still have access to the Bark theme along with the option to use the theme demo content you expected. We will be happy to help if you have any further questions.Initial Complaint

On September 20, 2023, I transferred my domain REMOVEDto WordPress.REMOVEDto take advantage of a promotional offer promising to cover transfer fees and add an extra year of REMOVEDJuly 2025, Automattic Inc. unilaterally suspended my domain without prior notice or REMOVEDinquiries through their ticketing system received only template responses. Direct email communication also went REMOVEDdirect communication failed, I filed a complaint with REMOVED(Case#REMOVED).REMOVED's final determination was:Regarding Transfer Denial: The registrar denied it citing "evidence of fraud." REMOVEDnoted this is a permitted denial reason under its policy but stated its review is limited to procedural compliance; it cannot evaluate the factual basis of the fraud claim.Regarding Domain Suspension: This was enacted under the registrar's Registration Agreement. REMOVEDstated it is not a party to that agreement and lacks authority to adjudicate related disputes.Consequently, REMOVEDclosed the case as outside its jurisdiction under the Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA).I then attempted to re-engage Automattic via email seeking resolution. Their only response was: "The domain will not be returned, and we will take no further action."My domain has now been suspended almost half a year, yet I remain uninformed of the specific reasons. Automattic has consistently failed to disclose any concrete details or evidence regarding the alleged "fraud".Why This Is Unfair:Lack of Transparency: The company has failed to provide clear evidence or details regarding the alleged "fraud."Violation of Agreement Terms: The suspension was based on vague clauses, but they have not demonstrated how my use violated these terms.Refusal to Engage: Despite attempts at resolution through direct communication and REMOVED, the company has refused to provide a reasonable resolution or meaningful explanation.Business Response

Complaint: REMOVED
I am rejecting this response because:I. Core Facts and Procedural Unfairness
1. Vague Allegations, Lack of Evidence: Automattic/WordPress.REMOVEDhas denied my domain transfer request citing "fraud," yet has never provided me (the domain registrant) with any specific evidence, factual details, or a written explanation for this serious allegation. This deprives me of my fundamental rights as a customer to be informed and to defend myself.
2. Violation of Basic Procedural Justice: According to general principles of domain dispute resolution, both the complainant and the respondent bear the burden of proof for their respective claims. Automattic made a unilateral determination of "fraud" but failed to fulfill its obligation to provide proof, rendering the process fundamentally unfair.
3. Contrary to Good Business Practices: This conduct is inconsistent with the principles of transparent and fair customer service. The unilateral suspension of service and refusal to communicate REMOVEDconsumer rights.
II. Exploiting Loopholes and the Dilemma of Appeal
1. Limitations of the REMOVEDProcess: The review by REMOVED's REMOVEDis limited to confirming whether the registrar followed procedures (e.g., providing a reason for denial) and does not have the authority to assess the validity or sufficiency of the reason itself (such as "fraud"). Automattic has precisely exploited this limitation.
2. Leaving the Consumer Without Recourse: Because REMOVEDdoes not conduct a substantive review and Automattic refuses to disclose its internal evidence, I, as a consumer, am left with no effective avenue for appeal within the REMOVEDframework, trapped in a situation where I am accused but cannot see the accusation to defend against it.
3. Shifting Responsibility: Automattic's response, citing that REMOVEDhas closed the case as grounds for considering "this matter resolved," essentially shifts the burden of proof and explanationwhich should rightly rest with themonto a neutral procedural oversight body.
III. Specific Demands and Proposed Solutions
1. Request for Re-evaluation: Based on the information disclosed above or the proposed negotiation, I demand that Automattic re-evaluate its decision to suspend and deny the transfer of the domain REMOVED.
2. Alternative Negotiation Proposal: To break the deadlock and resolve this issue promptly, I reiterate my good faith offer: if the alleged "fraud" is related to my legitimate use of a free transfer promotion on September 23, 2023, I am willing to repay the promotional discount amount. My core objective is to restore normal use or transfer rights for the domain REMOVED.
3. Disclosure of Evidence and Explanation: I formally request that Automattic/WordPress.REMOVEDprovide all specific evidence, factual statements, and internal investigation records upon which its "fraud" determination was based.I believe the Better Business Bureau (BBB) plays a vital role in upholding market fairness and protecting consumer rights. This complaint is not only about the ownership of my personal domain but also touches on the broader principle that large technology companies should operate with transparency and accountability toward their customers. Thank you for taking the time to address this matter. I look forward to your fair judgment and response.
Sincerely,

I am filing this complaint because Tumblr (owned by Automattic Inc.) has repeatedly failed to act on multiple reports of defamation and targeted misuse of my identity, in violation of their own REMOVEDand anti-harassment policies. The defamatory material remains publicly visible here: REMOVEDcontains false, malicious, and reputation-harming statements that misrepresent me personally and have caused ongoing harm. I used this business one time for an extended video reading off REMOVEDseveral months ago. Was met with being called a bREMOVEDin the video by a fake reader who calls herself INJtarot from the U.K, didn't appreciate that scam so I allowed the 8.88 charged on my card to go through and from what I thought was completed a cancel and delete of the entire account. But low and behold WordPress can't let it go, here they come back again charging my account 8.88 monthly? For a subscription? Look this type of hack is really annoying, it not only is against my acceptance but my bank will have to close down my card and reproduce a new one which takes 7 to 8 business days to receive. This causes a problem on my end and these scammers think this is funny interrupting my life for a repeated hack of 8.88 I don't wish to pay. Now I demand they return it or repercussions will be met. Hacks are illegal and I won't play they're games. Stay out of my bank!Business Response

Hey there I completely understand how frustrating this has been, especially after reaching out multiple times without clear answers. Youve been very patient, and Im sorry for the confusion around your account access.
Heres whats likely happening: accounts with only a domain registration (no paid plan) dont have direct chat or email support, which is why its been tricky to connect with our support team.
To help sort this out, Ill reach out directly to the email address linked to your WordPress.com account that owns the domain. Thatll let us verify ownership and help you regain access so you can manage your renewal properly.

Better Business Bureau:
I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference tocomplaint ID REMOVED, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me.One thing to note is that I hadnt received a response until I complained on BBB. I did indeed have a paid account and subscription. Its unclear to me how another account was created as the original email address that I used for the paid subscription was still in use.
Im grateful for the BBB reaching out on my behalf because I dont think I would have gotten through to a human otherwise. I understand that Wordpress will only provide customer service to people with a paid subscription, but when the chatbot cant find my paid account, that is not helpful.
My issue is now resolved. Thank you!

I was charged $329.25 by Wordpress for a purchase I did not make on September 11, 2025. I did not purchase a Wordpress Business account and I was charged for this service. I filed a REMOVEDdispute and Wordpress is trying to tell me that I have to cancel the dispute for them to be able to refund my money. I spoke with REMOVEDand they confirmed this was false and that if I cancelled the dispute, then Automatic would not be required to resolve the issue. This appears to be a situation that the business is trying to get me to cancel a dispute that would remove their accountability so they would not have to refund me the money they owe me for a charge I did not make and have cancelled immediately.Business Response

On Jun 21, 2025, I sent an alarming report to Wordpress.com and even an email, alerting them of what I witnessed on a blog post for a public figure. The man behind the blog is (allegedly) a lawyer who has been nonstop posting, harassing, and stalking the public figure since 2015 - at least. He has even obtained photos of the guy that, his inner circle and friends, are not aware about. I don't k now HOW he get childhood photos of the public figure, but it clearly shows the attorney involved is unhinged.Wordpress responded by saying that the individual running the blog is NOT violating their terms of service, which is ridiculous, because all the guy has done is put "legal" terms and descriptions but it doesn't matter. There needs to be a full fledged investigation because the guy is NOT well in the head. I also took screenshots and have attached the correspondence with Wordpress.com, what I witnessed in the comments section of his blog post where he threatened a user when the commenter - based on the implication - warned him that his personal info was on another website because of how much information he has already divulged about himself as well.Instead of taking a step back, he doubled down and threatened to dox the individual. As previously stated, Wordpress refuses to remove his blog or do anything about this. Because I worry that this correspondence might have my phone number included, I have given out an alternate number for this report's sake. I can be reached at the email posted above if any information needs to be confirmed. Thank you.Business Response
