- Advertising Review:On July 2, 2026, BBB challenged this company’s advertising that appears on their website at https://www.perplexity.ai/max.
Their website advertises "$450 free computer credits," for a limited time.
According to BBB Code of Advertising, 1. Basic Principles.
1.1 The primary responsibility for truthful and non-deceptive advertising rests with the advertiser. Advertisers should be prepared to substantiate any objective claims or offers made before publication or broadcast. Upon request, they should present such substantiation promptly to the advertising medium or BBB.
1.2 Advertisements which are untrue, misleading, deceptive, fraudulent, falsely disparaging of competitors, or insincere offers to sell, shall not be used.
1.3 An advertisement as a whole may be misleading by implication, although every sentence separately considered may be literally true.
1.4 Misrepresentation may result not only from direct statements, but by omitting or obscuring a material fact.
Perplexity A.I. was notified and asked to disclose the eligibility requirements for their limited time promotional offer. Perplexity AI has responded with the following
Perplexity’s position is that the 35,000 Computer Credits promotion for Max is a one-time, first-time Max subscriber bonus tied to the first Max subscription on an account. It is not reissued on renewals, resubscriptions, or billing-cycle changes. A Max subscription continues to include 10,000 monthly credits that refresh each billing cycle, while regular Perplexity Ask searches remain unlimited and do not use credits.
On the request for 35,000 additional Computer Credits, Perplexity’s stated policy is that the one-time 35,000-credit bonus is only granted on the first Max subscription for an account. If this was genuinely the account’s first Max subscription and the bonus did not appear within 24 hours of starting Max, that would warrant review. Otherwise, the bonus is not granted again after a prior Max subscription.
On the request for a refund related to the June 9, 2026 Max renewal or upgrade charge, refunds are available only in limited situations, including an upgrade to Max made by mistake when the request is made within 24 hours, certain unauthorized charges, qualifying service-side failures for Computer tasks, or where local consumer-protection law requires it. Outside those situations, purchased credits are generally non-refundable, and used credits are never refundable.
On disclosure language, the requested clarification can be stated as follows: eligibility for the 35,000 Computer Credit promotion should be clearly disclosed as limited to first-time Max subscribers on an account, and not available again on renewals, resubscriptions, or switches between monthly and yearly billing. That addresses the concern raised about whether the offer applies to all users shown an “Upgrade to Max” message.
