PeopleFinders.com originally only charged me a dollar to use their service. They then tried to sign me up for a membership which I declined. I called their customer service today after seeing a pending charge on my account. They tried to tap dance around the fact that they stole money from me claiming the terms and conditions werent read. The ****'s right to delete, also known as the right to erasure, allows California residents to request that businesses delete their personal information. Businesses must comply with these requests. Additionally, that PeopleFinders and their service providers do the same. Submitted prior requests, requesting a right to deletion of my information in-addition to my fathers due to privacy concerns. Despite concerted efforts and prior requests to prevent future sharing of our personal data, PeopleFinders have continued to reinstate our information. The sharing of information poses significant safety and privacy concerns leaving individuals vulnerable to exploitation and misuse of the data collected and sold. The potential consequences are the increased risk of fraud, identity theft and threats to personal safety. Implementing an opt-out process should not create increased difficulty for consumers who wish to submit a request to opt-out of the sale of their data. This is a formal notice to PeopleFinders that they stop collecting, selling, or sharing our information. I am rejecting this response because: Because like I mentioned in my initial complaint, I cancelled as soon as I signed up, before the 3 day trial ended, "immediately" cancelled. I have proof attached that they were having issues with the website link for broken webpage they gave me to cancel in an email and they kept auto responding with the same email with the ":instructions to cancel" in an endless loop. I did try to call to let them know that on their site it even said that I successfully cancelled but the peoplefinder associate acted rude and indifferent to what I was saying and did not care. I had my CC alerted to the possible charges from them. They tried and were blocked the first time and then a few days later they tried again and got the charge through. This is AFTER the email their "support" team got! Very shady company that needs to be dealt with on your highest degree of reproof, please. I still need my unauthorized ***** refunded. I am rejecting this response because: They are making a false statement about "reporting fraud" to them. I did no such thing in regards to being charged after I requested they cancel my membership with a support ticket since their link did not work, and they just keep sending me the broken link. As the BBB can see you are just now making these falsehood after you have already responded with nothing of the kind in the complaint history. Now all of a sudden I made a fraud claim...WRONG! Refund is still needed. You have the proof that I tried to cancel and that I got no help other than same genertic email for the broken cancel link. I even mentioned that in that doc I uploaded that I would contact the BBB if I could not get a proper response, and here we are. Refund please and thank you!

I am rejecting this response because: I reject PeopleFinders response. The core issue is not whether I conducted searches after realizing the charge the core issue is that the Lifetime Membership was purchased in error due to a deliberately confusing interface designed to trick users trying to cancel a trial subscription.
At the time, I was actively attempting to cancel my trial, and the interface misled me into authorizing a $69 charge instead. Any use of the service afterward was incidental, as I was trying to understand what had happened and whether I could reverse the charge.
This business model takes advantage of consumers through misleading design, which is why I am continuing to pursue this matter through my financial institution and will file formal complaints with the *** and my state Attorney Generals office.
I respectfully ask the BBB to note that my dispute is based on deceptive practices at the point of purchase, not post-purchase activity.

I was looking for a website to help me look up a phone number and came across Peoplefinder. I signed up for an account (not a membership) and was offered to pay .95 cents to search up the details of this phone number. I authorized the charge. This was back in March. Today, I am looking through charges of my credit card and noticed a charge of $24.95. I looked back and noticed I was charged this every month since April. I logged into my account and saw that I did not have a monthly membership so I reached out to the support. They claim I did sign up for a 3 day trial. I know for sure I did not. They refused to help so I am reporting them. I believe this company scams you. How could my account say I am not a member but still be charged a monthly fee? They scam you into thinking you are only buying that one thing of .95 cents but really you just gave them your payment info to make consistent unauthorized charges and when you tell them it is unauthorized they still refuse to refund you.Business Response

My account under the email ************************ was closed by a staff member of People Finders. I placed an order on April 23, 2025 for one background check @ $29.95. I was offered at the same time in a pop-up window to instead upgrade to a membership that would provide 10 background checks per month for lifetime, one-time fee of $69.95. I opted for the lifetime membership. My credit card was charged for both fees (as provided in proof). Not until May 3, did I contact People Finders to refund the $29.95 as that was ample time to refund the charge. The lifetime membership appeared on my account. I sent an email on May 3, 2025 to People Finders as indicated in the automated message when you call and the website to contact ************** On the automated message states a response would be received in a day. Well, that did not happen. As a matter of fact, they never answered the email. I ended up calling my credit card company to dispute the $29.95 charge. When I went to login to my People Finder account afterwards, I was unable to. I called to find out why. I was informed that because I did not call them and a dispute was filed, they closed my account which had the lifetime offer for $69.95. I was additionally informed they could not refund the $69.95 that should have been on the account they closed, I would need to call my credit card company back and dispute that charge. I have been a customer MANY years and was treated poorly as I was told I should've called them, that's why they closed my account. As if everything was my fault. I spoke with ******, ***** and *********. No resolution to get my lifetime membership back. Only suggestion was to open an account under another email. So I did, hoping to regain the same offer while I had their *** on the phone. It turned out that I signed up for a monthly membership instead for $65.95 that I didn't want and will not use.
