I am writing to formally file a complaint against Koons Automotive, located at ************************************************************************, regarding deceptive and misleading practices during a recent vehicle purchase. On April 22, 2025, I purchased a 2020 ************* C300 (VIN: *****************) from Koons Automotive. The salesperson was ****** *****, and the manager involved was ****** *****.When I questioned the high price of the vehicle, which was Initially offered to me for around $29,000 to $30,000, ****** ***** repeatedly stated that, due to my poor credit, the dealership had to pay the bank to get me approved for financing. At the time, I was unaware that this was not a legitimate or standard business practice.****** ***** also showed me a printout claiming the car was valued at nearly $31,995 and insisted that he was giving me a good deal. I was deceived into believing I was getting a good deal, which heavily influenced my decision to move forward with the purchase. At the time, I trusted the representations made by ****** and ******, but I now realize those statements were deceptive. After learning what negative equity means and conducting my own due diligence, I discovered that vehicles identical to mine, even those with significantly lower mileage, are not priced anywhere near the amount I paid. While I understand that dealerships have discretion in pricing, that discretion becomes unlawful when it's used deceptively to pressure a consumer into a purchase. Using sources such as ****** Blue Book, *******, and **** Power, I have found no justification for the $32,000 value ****** showed me. A $2,461.70 service contract was added to my final contract without clear disclosure. At no point was this fee explained to me, nor was I told it was optional. I was never asked whether I wanted to purchase an extended warranty, and I was not informed that the cost exceeded $2,000.Initial Complaint

I drove 120 miles based on an advertised price AND email AND text confirmation of that price, only to get there and find out it was $4K higher. Although I was paying cash, they made me fill out a financing application and provide lots of personal information including social security number, income, employment, info on my home mortgage. Only after getting all this information did they tell me that the price was $4K higher.Initial Complaint

I received a mailer from ****** Automotive announcing I won a $3,000 cash prize in their $100,000 Cash Giveaway. The mailer had a scratch-off area and a game card with a matching code for the $3,000 prize. However, when I went to claim my prize, they introduced new rules and a prize board in-store, which wasn't mentioned in the mailer. Furthermore, the asterisks in the mailer reference a different contest name ($50,000 Instant Win Scratch Off Ticket Contest), which doesn't match the actual contest name ($100,000 Cash Giveaway). I believe this is a deceptive practice, and I'm seeking help to resolve this issue.Business Response

This car dealership is so unprofessional and preys on young adults and sells them lies and false advertisement. Me and my friend were told for 4 hours while they wasted and procrastinated and acted like they were helping us. I was given false hope in purchasing a vehicle. I was told that if i put a certain amount of money down for my down payment, that i could drive away with a car the same day.Business Response

I received a mailer from Koons Automotive of Culpeper claiming that I could win up to $100,000 if I matched the card suits under the pull tabs. Lo and behold, I pulled 6 diamonds in a row! I was the winner of a 75" HD TV! I called the number on the mailer and the nice, southern-sounding woman asked for the serial number on my mailer and confirmed I had indeed won a 75" HD TV.I excitedly drove 25 miles to the dealership the next day (March 11, 2024) with my mailer in hand. When I got here, I was told to take a seat while they got someone to help me. A salesman came over and I let him know I was there to collect my prize. He told me he had to make his pitch so I sat patiently and listened. He used every sales tactic in the book, making connections, asking questions, buttering me up, etc.Once I made it clear I was not interested in trading in or buying a car from him, he let me know I had not won a TV. He then pulled open the flyer I'd brought, showing me the fine print, talking about statistics, and then led me to the mailer board. From there, I could see I had not won. My serial number wasn't on the board. According to the fine print, this was the rule all along; but Id been thrown off by the phone call. He said I could, at this point, maybe win $100 in cash. He spun a golden cage and I pulled out an envelope and found a $2 bill inside. That was my prize. In my outrage at being duped, I told him when I'd called I'd been told I'd won. He said "They didnt tell you that. From the parking lot, I called the number I'd called the day before. The woman who answered noted that I'd already called and told me the same thing he did: Nobody would have told you that. I asked her to pull the recorded conversation. She refused. I went back in and asked for the information they'd written down about me during the sales pitch. The man who had greeted me said "then I want my prize back." I returned his $2 bill and retrieved my information.Business Response

On Wednesday 28 February my family was having fun looking for a used truck for our land use. We decided to see what Koons offered from the sales ad sent. Upon arrival, I was asked for my ID from someone who said his name was stormin ******. He said he had to verify to receive our prize. My ID never returned. When I asked for my ID back he said he never had it. Then he changed the story that my husband gave Id when he did not. Then he said I am a dingbat and dropped it out shopping. This place had a handful of ids on random places that people left behind from their high push sales pitches. The company does not handle personal information se I rely, is ***** and hateful when you dont buy their cars and they lie! Someone has my ID. I simply want my id back!Business Response

On 9/19/2023 I went to Koons of ********* to purchase a vehicle, 2020 Mitsubushi Eclipse. ******************************* informed me that I would be able to return the vehicle within 30 days signed lender documentation. Same day I arrive home I go to lock my car come back to get something out and the car wouldn't open. called the dealership several time until they answered, and they sent out someone from ********** dealership. I noticed there were several things wrong with the car the next day like breaks squeaking, and I spoke with ********************* said it's because they were new. I mentioned there was something wrong with the cigarette compartment was broken, and ****** at service said that how it goes. I'm sure it's not supposed to be loose. I also told them about the car making a metal with metal noise and I sent them a video and still didn't help with anything. Everyone there was harassing me with phone calls and text messages, from *****, ******, ****** and I don't know who else there because they had different numbers. asking for several paystubs, at the end they said they pick up the car because I'm not full time which I'm contracted by PWCS working ***** hours weekly. I want my down payment back because I didn't get the car and they committed fraud. i was never given a loan number however i signed and did everything they asked. They took the car back and I need my money to get another one.Business Response

In response to Mrs. ******* complaint ID #********, the original application we received from Mrs. ****** was incorrect. She claimed she was making more money than she actually was making or that we could verify which made the loan unfundable. Mrs. ****** was in training for three months to get her CDL and then she would receive the money that was claimed on the application. She was in the vehicle for 2-3 months while trying to finish the training and make the money that she originally claimed. We had no choice but to take the vehicle back because she wasnt employed full time which was required by the bank loan she had been prequalified for.

My husband and I bought a 2018 ****** Altima from Koons of Fredericksburg. At the time we asked had the car been wrecked and were reassured it hadnt and they offered the carfaxs. December 28 we had to return the car due to the bank discovering that Koons bought the car at the auction with major structural damage. Koons repaired the car and tried to hide it saying it came from there Woodbridge location and nobody informed them. Apparently Im not the first unique case as they claimed. I think its time for a class action for auto fraud.Business Response

We have reviewed this situation. We do see on the auto check that the vehicle was claimed to have structure damage. The Carfax however does not reflect the same information, it says that the vehicle has no accidents and no reported damage. Both sources show that the Altima has no history of salvage, junk, rebuilt, fire, flood, hail, lemon, total loss, airbag deployed or odometer problems. After we purchased not only did it pass our inspection process, it also passed ******** safety inspection at an independent new car dealership. We did allow you to return the vehicle and you were not charged anything, we apologize for any inconvenience you feel *** have caused.Initial Complaint

Date of Transaction: 4/29/2023 Account: ********* Cash Down Payment: $200 with a trade-in gross $1,800.00 (2009 ******* Sonata)Koons **** Automotive committed business that the vehicle purchased had no issues and no co-signer. During the conversation I told the sales ***** ************************ that my credit wasn't good and will need a co-signer, but he pressed the issue, and it was approved. The following day after vehicle issues occurred and the business didn't want to cooperate resolving the issue. The vehicle warning lights appeared wasn't sure the problem and couldn't be driven to dealership. I haven't had the pleasure to enjoy driving the vehicle. I contacted Koons with issue told me I'm responsible to get the vehicle to them. I asked if they could give me another vehicle immediately told me I need a co-signer and couldn't be of an assistance and my trade-in vehicle isn't available to receive. A few months had passed when I visited Koons and spoke with ************************** sales ***** and the same situation impossible to resolve the issue. On 11/7/23 got off work early to visit Koons and was surprised that *****, sale ***** was working because he's never there. We had a conversation about the 2017 Renegade Jeep again and he suggested give him some time to talk with his friend and get he'll back to me. Well, the finance department called me wanting the opportunity to exam the vehicle, but I would be liable for payment that's not covered. I told them I do not want the vehicle anymore, refund of all payments, too stressful and treated unfairly as a customer. ********************** **** ********************** is an unprofessional business, unfair to customers not sure because I'm African American regardless they didn't do diligence to resolve the issue.Business Response
Date: 02/26/2024
To whom it may concern,
Our last record of service with the Renegade was on 05/01/2023. At that time, we checked a fan for wobbling, the front lights to make sure they worked and replaced a plastic Moulding. We don't have any other record of the vehicle being brought back for service since then. If ****************** would like to bring the vehicle back in for our service department to look over, we would gladly set up an appointment free of charge for a checkout.

Complaint: 20841833
I am rejecting this response because Koons Automotive haven't resolved the issue regarding the vehicle being a "lemon" that ***********************, Sales, who sold the vehicle to me. And when I had visited the business *********************** isn't' there and when he is at work very unprofessional about the situation not willingly to due diligence work immediately talk around the issue having you think he's going to contact you and it never happen to resolve the issue. I've also spoke to *************************, Sales, and he wasn't helpful either. That is why I submitted documents filing a claim to BBB. The business has a lot of bad reviews and I understand the reasoning for it, the worst car sales business in Culpeper County Virginia.

On April 29, 2023, when I purchased the 2017 Jeep Renegade vehicle there was issues, I addressed, vehicle seat belt cover replacement, steering column issue with signal light, vehicle running hot/overheated. They replaced the seat belt cover only. While the vehicle sitting, not driven, they suggested I contact a towing company, have it towed at my expense and not covered under maintenance that more money out of pocket for repairs. The first week of November 2023, I spoke with ************************************, he suggested he could get me another vehicle. Whoever he discussed the matter with, ***** had the audacity to ask me for co-signer. I didn't need a co-signer when I purchase the Jeep that's when I knew terrible business, unprofessional and non-negotiable to whatever to make a deal. At this point I'm very angry, I asked and couldn't get back my trade-in vehicle, 2009 ******* Sonata 4 door Sedan back. Also note - a lot of verbal conversations which wasn't documented on ****** behalf, no intensions to make a fair deal. Koons Automotive of Culpeper VA are the worst car dealership.
