1 starI’ve been a Paychex payroll customer for over 7 years, and while the service has always been hit or miss, this latest experience was the final straw!
Earlier this year, I received a call from a Paychex employee named Jorge Alberto M**** who informed me that due to a new California law, I needed to offer my employees a 401(k) plan. I was hesitant — I knew my employees weren’t interested, and the pricing seemed high. I specifically asked: Can we cancel the plan later without any penalty or fee if my employees opt out? He clearly stated, Yes, no fees or penalties to cancel.
Fast forward a few months — just as expected, my employees didn’t want to participate. I called to cancel, and to my shock, I was told I owed over $1,800 to shut down something we never even used! When I asked to speak with the original salesperson (Jorge), I was told there was no record of who signed me up and that they couldn’t help me. Complete runaround.
This feels like a bait-and-switch tactic, plain and simple.
Beyond this incident, the quality of service over the years has been wildly inconsistent. I’ve gone through multiple payroll specialists — some were great, while others were unresponsive, unprofessional, or just plain rude.
Needless to say, I’m done with Paychex. I’ll be taking my business elsewhere and recommend others think twice before trusting them, especially with something as important as retirement plans or payroll.Paychex Inc

1 starPaychex is the worst company. The reps. are horrible the efficiency is horrible. nobody knows anything correct. They have the ability to go in and out your account to collect payroll, that is to be expected. You receive no notification when payroll is rejected from someone's account. They go into your main account and collect funds a few times from the company. When you call to get answers the rep says on on a line and you have to email the information you are requesting and wait for someone to respond. Meanwhile you are left holding the bag. You get the run around and you are left paying double most times. I have had an ongoing issue since 8-29-2025 and the rep admitted it was a paychex error and i am still living the nightmare. And its still happening.Paychex Inc

1 starBeen using Paychex for a few years now for my clients' payroll accounts. The past two years, they have shown no interest in supporting my clients when issues arise on their end. Examples: state taxes are not getting paid on time-monthly notices are issued from the state with interest and penalties now due, vacation hours are not getting accrued and tracked properly, when you email a support request, no one gets back to you unless you constantly call in and email, and maybe two weeks later someone will respond, they continuously tell you what you want to hear but never follow through on their word. They constantly pass the issue on to someone else who doesn't respond. Support is JUST NOT THERE and NO ONE CARES.Paychex Inc

1 starWorst payroll company. You can not cancel with them. They are like a GYM membership. They did not pay my state taxes on top of it, and now I owe the state over $7000. They took $3k for an ERTC credit, and it has been over three years, and nothing has happened. On top of it, they sue me for unpaid membership, and their lawyer keeps harassing me.Paychex Inc

2 starsI have been using Paychex for payroll services since 2009. Through the years, I had great customer service. However, recently the customer service has completely dropped off. I have an open issue now for more than one month. I've called and e-mailed at least 5 people, including managers and I have no indication that anything is being done. In the e-mail signatures, there is a supervisor that gives his/her information for feedback. I've e-mailed the supervisor, and the supervisor's manager and have received nothing back from both. I usually don't require much from the account representatives, but this issue is something I cannot resolve without assistance from Paychex. To be clear, it is not that I was told they cannot help. I just don't get even an acknowledgement of the problem. Very disappointing.Paychex Inc

1 starWe have been a customer of Paychex, as a small business, for almost 24 years. Most recently, as a result of their confusing invoices for the over charging on administrative fees, and an oversight on our part, they stopped our payroll and held up our employee paychecks due to the invoice not paid. Instead of calling our offices to rectify the issue, which, as it turned out to be their fault, they stopped our employee's paychecks!
In all the time we have been a customer of this company, we have never been treated so rudely or unprofessionally. As a result, we have left this company's payroll services and will NEVER return.Paychex Inc

1 starWe are a small, family-owned business that signed on with ***** nearly 30 years ago. We remained loyal even after they were acquired by Paychex, trusting that our long history would continue to be valued. Unfortunately, the opposite has happened.
Since the transition to Paychex, customer service has become almost unbearable. It’s now difficult to reach anyone who can answer a question, let alone resolve an issue. We are passed from person to person, with little follow-through and no sense of urgency.
On top of that, our costs have increased dramatically, with no clear justification. Fees are layered and confusing, and there is no transparency in how our taxes and charges are calculated. We now strongly suspect we are being overcharged, particularly for SUTA, and Paychex has made no effort to provide clarity or support. For a company of their size, this level of opacity feels intentional.
What’s most frustrating is that after decades of partnership, we are treated like an account number, not a client. There has been no benefit to staying with Paychex—just rising costs, worsening service, and a complete lack of accountability.
We feel taken advantage of, and we’re now in the process of moving to another provider. If you’re a small business, we strongly urge you to look elsewhere.Paychex Inc
