I am writing to express my concern regarding a recurring issue I have experienced at Bunks Feed Barn, the local Purina dealership, with regard to the availability and sale of rabbit feed.
On multiple occasions—including today—I have contacted the store to inquire about purchasing rabbit feed, only to be informed that the product was out of stock. However, during these instances, I have personally observed multiple bags of rabbit feed visibly stored in the warehouse. This discrepancy between what I am told and what I see has raised serious questions about the transparency of the store’s practices.
Today, after again being informed that there was no rabbit feed available, I learned from a friend—whom I had contacted to borrow feed—that the store did in fact have inventory. Following this, a friend acting as a “secret shopper” visited the store immediately after me and was able to purchase a bag of the very same feed I was denied. On a separate occasion, my grandmother visited the store on my behalf and was allegedly told by REMOVED, a representative of the store, “Is this feed for REMOVED? Because he said he didn’t like Purina,” and was nearly refused service. Such a comment feels unprofessional and discriminatory, particularly as I have made no such derogatory statement about the brand. When I spoke directly with REMOVED today, she eventually acknowledged that feed was in stock but claimed it was being held for another customer. When I expressed that this felt like a refusal of business, she offered no clear justification, nor did she provide confirmation of the customer for whom the product was supposedly reserved. My concern is rooted in fairness, honesty, and equitable access to products. I do not understand why I am repeatedly unable to purchase a standard product from a local business where I have conducted myself respectfully. I hope this matter can be addressed appropriately and that steps will be taken to ensure fair treatment for all customers moving forward.Business Response

Bunk’s Feed
Barn has been a family-owned business since 1960 and is proud to provide
excellent customer service to all customers. We are sorry to hear about your
dissatisfaction with your recent attempt to purchase show rabbit feed. As we
have informed you twice in the past, our goal is to stock show feed for our
dedicated customers with some extra bags for new or walk-in customers. As you
were informed when your two requests were made, our new shipment had not
arrived and our regular show customers were due to pick up their bags that were
in stock. We offered to provide you the show rabbit feed the following week so
we would not short change our customers during show season. Other customers are
understanding on this practice on items that are not used by a lot of customers
and are happy to order for the next week. The “secret customer” was actually a
regular show rabbit customer who drives a long distance and was due to pick up
the bags we had left at the time of your request. I understand this was
disappointing to you and we do apologize for the inconvenience. Unfortunately,
your quotes that store staff did “eventually state that the feed was in stock”
and that they “offered no clear explanation” are untrue. The staff member did
explain the situation to you over the telephone and offer to get it the
following week.
Your request
for rabbit show feed made by your grandmother happened several years ago and is
not related to the current issue. Your grandmother’s request for rabbit show feed
was not “nearly refused,” but was fulfilled that same day. The staff did not
use the words as quoted to your grandmother as you quoted in the complaint.
However, the request may have been met with great surprise because of your
prior complaint to our store and to the manufacturer about bad rabbit show feed.
This complaint resulted in the manufacturer representatives going to your rabbit
barn and testing the rabbit show feed and found absolutely nothing wrong. As
you can see in your quote in your complaint “Such a comment feels unprofessional
and discriminatory, particularly as I have made no such derogatory statement
about the brand” is untrue. Bunk’s Feed Barn values all our customers
and makes every effort to satisfy their requests. There are many other feed
dealers in town and surrounding area that carry this same rabbit show feed that
could be an option for you in the future if we are unable to meet your request. We hope we have adequately addressed your
concerns and informed you once again about our policy on show feeds and other
low-volume products. We have successfully dealt with hundreds of customers
since 1960 and treat all our customers with courtesy and respect.
