I used an H&R Block accountant to do my 2023 taxes. The accountant made a big mistake which resulted in me owing taxes that I didn’t owe. It required a lot of time to fix it. H&R Block offer a refund if mistakes are made by tax preparers. I have called at least 5 times to get the refund due to the mistake and no one has gotten back to me in 6 months.Customer Answer

I received an IRS audit letter stating issues with my 2020 taxes. I reviewed my records and immediately saw my error, I worked in New York but lived in Connecticut. My first time filing online I filed Connecticut NOT NEW YORK. My mistake, I went to Wendy a H &R rep I used for years so she can rectify on February 28 2024. She was to do a Amendment and file for New York. I followed up a few days later she assured me all was good to go. I received a call from Auditor that there were no leads/updates on my taxes. I called Wendy and she assured me all was done and that she will call Auditor with info. This went on for several weeks, until finally I did not hear from auditor and assumed all was good. I received a letter in August again for the audit and immediately called Wendy as I had her cell phone, she was upset and assured me AGAIN she filed all necessary paper work. I decided to call another H & R Block and was repeatedly set up for phone assistance but noone ever followed up. This happened until October/ November when I finally was able to get a person, she verified the original worker Wendy uploaded my tax files but never submitted to New York or did any amendments. The H & R Block Rep. Sta and I called the IRS, New York and refiled all the paper work and amendments(This took several times I had to drive a half hour to her office). I had $2,300. withdrawn from my account December 5,2024 and soon after had my pay garnished $233. weekly until I paid 4,101. $2,600 and the rest in penalties. The H & R Block Sta called to refute and admitted it was H & R Block agent for not filing but it did not matter. I received a letter from N.Y. stating I would have received $533. but the staues of limitations states they don't have to pay me anything. Sta ( H & R BLOCK agent) and her area director assured me H & R Block will give me a full refund, I have to keep calling, emailing and all communication has come to a dead end. I am rejecting this response because:I was audited and penalized because the representative did not file my taxes, process any amendments and continued to lie about doing so. I provided all documents and was repeatedly transferred and lied to by management in regard to this issue. I spent a entire year making calls, talking to different people, pleading for help before the issue escalated. I was told I will get ALL my money back as representative. Failed to do her job. If she would have filed I never would have paid out of pocket. They are refusing to hold themselves accountable for this mess and treated me as if I didn't matter for as many times I escalated Noone moved until I reached out to BBB and want to say they've done their best? Additionally, I am dissatisfied with H & R Block's corporate leadership condoning the reckless and crude behavior of Ms. ******* ***** and her daughter ********. ******* would not return phone calls after promising she would. She did not honor a scheduled conference call on Monday, April 14. She allowed a casual acquaintance to accompany her to a secondary room containing clients' private information on Saturday, April 12. ******** verbally assaulted me. They called the Harriman City Police to publicly humiliate me just because I was asking for my property. They possibly have the security camera deactivated which is a substantial risk to clients. I am rejecting this response because: My property has not been returned and no assurance has been provided that my private information--my identity--is safe. Exchanging or handing off a client's private information is a crime. Additionally, allowing a non-client/casual acquaintance to accompany the building manager to a secondary room containing clients' private information should be in defiance of company policy. H&R Block representatives have not addressed this matter. Moreover, deactivating the security camera is surely in discord with company policy as well. That is a major safety issue. The building workers used that arrangement to slander me and portray me inappropriately to the Harriman City Police. Where is that proof? I want a recording of my visit on Monday, April 14, 2025. I did not deserve being cited for trespassing. I am the one who suffered loss. I had to leave with nothing!******* ***** lied to me several times, promising phone calls and the retrieval of my folder containing my private information.
Corporate representatives still have not issued a reason or apology for ******* *****' reneging on our phone conference on Monday, April 14 at 9:00 a.m.
The misconduct--including blatant acts of crime--cannot be ignored and covered up. H&R Block Corporate Headquarters must step up and assume accountability for the unacceptable improprieties that have occurred at the Harriman office.

When I lost my debit card, I tried getting it replaced and gave hr and block my info which is a requirement to be able to help someone. I gave them the info and was told I'd get my card delivered within 10days. Never received a card and they ended up stealing my identity. I had my taxes done at HR block because they offered me $150 off tax prep to return. I did it. *** use I don’t make that much money and I figured 150 off was a good deal. Well, needless to say, I’m sorry I did because I still had to pay $175 for approximately 20 minutes of their time. In addition, I received a letter indicating they *** to verify my existence???? Shouldn’t there have been some kind of trigger indicating a problem before e-filing. Seems to me the software is not catching errors and makes me question if my return was even processed correctly. I’m furious because I contacted them for resolution and their response was it had nothing to do with HR block. What type of customer service is that? At H&R Block, our tax services are customized to fit each individual’s unique tax situation and we do provide upfront pricing to be sure our clients are aware of our fees before they proceed with our services. As an additional effort to assist with the cost, the client was granted the use of a coupon which did provide a discount to their overall tax preparation cost.
Furthermore, the client return has been completed, we do understand the client was selected by the taxing authority for their state to verify their identity. The client was advised on the steps needed to complete this verification. Due to the security measure put in place by said taxing authority any client that received this correspondence must complete the verification directly with the state.

I had an appointment on Febuary 25, 2025 to drop off taxes, which I did. I was told it would be about 2 weeks. I called on 3/12/25, and the Manager *****, only told me that the taxes were not done and it would be a while. I called again on Wednesday April 9, 2025 at 0909, spoke with ******* at the front desk. She said their was a "note" on my chart and she would need to ask a manager. She put me on hold, and returned saying there was not a manager available and would return a call when able. No call back. I called again at 1442, and spoke with ******* again. She said she would send another urgent message to *******, who is in charge of our taxes, and could expect a phone call in a few days. I said no, that it had been weeks and I needed a call back that day. She said ok. No phone call was every returned. On 4/10/25 at 0900, my husband and I went into the office. ***** was there. She made a phone call, but went into the back where we could not hear call. Came back and she said that because my husband turned in the last piece of tax paper needed last week, that they had not even begun to start on our taxes. She told me that ******* was doing corporate taxes due on May 15 first, and then personal taxes and that I would need to file for an extension. I expressed my concern that deadline was 5 days away, and there was no communication from their end on multiple occasions. ***** just continued to say that she had told me it would be a while. There has been no communication from the person doing our actual taxes. ***** states she is the manager and she is communicating through to him, and when we request to speak to him she says she is handling it. I did walk out on her, being that no solution could be made and her not willing to do anything to help this situation. Associate ***** * ******* prepared an amendment (Dec 7, 2024), submitted (Jan 11, 2025) to my 2022 taxes. This was needed due to an error on my original tax done by H&R Block at South Milwaukee, WI location on April 15, 2023 by **** *****.
The amendment was in response to a letter from the IRS dated November 18, 2004, stating if I forgot something on my return.
Ms. ******* recommended I do an extension, since the system was down. I did this and the extension was approved on December 9, 2024 for 30 days.
On January 11, 2025, I signed the amendment and was it was supposedly was submitted when I was there.
I received a certified letter from the IRS dated February 18, 2025, titled Notice of Deficiency - proposed change to your tax. I sent this letter to Ms ******* on February 22, 2025. I also texted Ms ******* and have attempted to contact her by phone. I have not heard back from Ms Coleman.
On January 21, 2025, I received a payment of $420, which is my original payment for initial preparation of my 2022 taxes.
I would like to verify the status of the amendment. I would also like follwup on H&R block accuracy guarantee which ensures my return is mistake free and payment of fees/interest etc associated with the error from the original return.Business Response

I am rejecting this response because:I previously filed a complaint in regards to my 2022 return. The return was done erronously. The compliant was in regards to submitting the amended. The first complaint was satisfied, as a an manager, Wendy *****, ath the office at, **** ** **** St, Greenfield, WI submitted the amended. After the submission, Ms. ***** was out of the office for an extended time. After the amended return the IRS had issues with conflicting data and sent me another letter. I had no idea of the issue as I submitted all my documents. With no assistance from H&R block and continued letters and accuring interest; I paid in full the amount ($3816.23) on Jun 29, 2025, due date was Jun 30, 2025. Today June 30 2025, I called the branch at **** * *** st Greenfield. To submit the latest IRS letter and to provide proof of payment. I was requesting reinbursement of the interest/fees. When I called today, I was promptly hung up on.

Filed 2021 Taxes with H & R Block February 16, 2022 fee of $335.00
Received first letter from IRS November 20, 2023 stating there was an error made on our 2021 filing. Took the IRS letter to H & R Block on November 21, 2023 paid them additional $79.00 to tell me the IRS was wrong. The H & R Block Tax Pro made notes on the IRS letter and assured me we owed nothing further. This response was mailed by certified mail to the IRS same day by me. Received second letter from IRS Mach 11,2024 . Again I visited H & R Block office where I was once again assured the IRS was wrong. The Tax Pro had her supervisor review the IRS letter and the correspondence was then approved by the supervisor mailed certified mail same day by me.
Received third letter from IRS on May 20, 2024. Made an appointment with another H & R Block Tax Pro ( only office open seasonal ) Tax Pro prepared a response letter to the IRS and charged me another $99.00. Again I was assured the IRS was wrong and we owed nothing further. Received forth letter from IRS and after many hours of trying to call IRS myself I finally got to speak with IRS Tax Pro and yes Tax Pro is appropriate as she explained the error H & R Block made on the original filing Feb 16, 2022. H & R Block transposed numbers on the original filing which was a costly mistake for us. Five H & R Block Tax Pros failed to find this error. H & R Block committed to provide 100 % accuracy as well as 100% satisfaction. I have spent countless hours trying to get my money back. Paid H & R Block a total of $513.00 Paid IRS $197.14 Interest along with additional $922.14 tax. H & R Block keeps giving me the run around. Please Help !!!Business Response
