I enrolled with Varsity Tutors (***********) in January 2024. On February 16, 2024, I emailed to cancel, explaining that my first ***** no-showed two sessions and my second ***** couldnt help because she lacked the required Excel add-in; my course ended a week later, so I no longer needed *****ing. Instead of cancelling, I was persuaded to pause. I was not told the pause would auto-expire or that billing would resume without my explicit consent. There was no charge in March 2024 (consistent with a pause), but without any clear notice that the pause ended, Varsity resumed charging in April 2024 and billed me monthly through ****** 2025totaling $6,642for services I did not intend to use and largely did not use. When I contacted support on September 8, 2025, I was told they likely wouldnt refund even the ****** charge. This is unfair: I made a clear cancellation request, was steered into a pause, and then charged long-term without conspicuous notice or affirmative consent to restart. I request (1) a full refund of all charges after February 16, 2024 through ****** 2025 (currently totaling $6,500+), (2) immediate cancellation with written confirmation that no further billing will occur, and (3) a written record of when my account was un-paused and copies/timestamps of any notices Varsity claims it sent. I am filing a complaint against Varsity Tutors regarding an unauthorized charge and refusal to issue a refund.On August 7, 2025, I purchased an 8-hour all-inclusive tutoring package for $639.00. During the enrollment process, I clearly communicated to the representative that I only intended to use the service for one month. I was assured that this would not be an issue and that the program would not automatically renew.However, on September 7, 2025, I was billed for a second cycle, even though my membership status clearly stated:Aug 06, 2025 - Sep 06, 2025 Not Auto Renewing.I have not used any tutoring services since September 6, 2025. Upon noticing the unauthorized charge, I immediately contacted Varsity Tutors to request a refund. My request was denied. I was told that I should have canceled before the billing date, which directly contradicts what I was originally told by the representative at the time of purchase. Had I known this, I would have taken appropriate action to avoid further charges.This feels like a case of misrepresentation and poor business practice. I was charged for services I did not use and did not agree to continue. I inquired varsity tutoring for assistance on SAT prep and they only had a monthly charge at 4 hours as the smallest. I only needed a few hours and the *** told me I could sign up for the monthly charge and then cancel immediately after and so thats what I did. I assumed he canceled immediately after, but he didnt and so they charged me again the next month for another four hours. I went ahead and paid the additional cost for the additional four hours, but recently they called and told me I dont have any hours. They canceled those hours when I canceled my contract, but yet I paid for them. I am hoping to still use the four additional hours since I paid for them. I feel they are unfairly marketing families in their practices.Business Response

Cancelation of my auto renewal subscription didn't go through, and now they refuse to give me a refund. When initially signing up my account, I clicked the option to cancel the auto renewal of my subscription, but they said they don't see it on my account and charged me anyway. When I did successfully cancel, I had to click several different buttons making it confusing and at the end I was still unsure if I had canceled the auto renewal. I had to call to find out if my second attempt at canceling had registered. When I asked for a refund and explained that I had tried to cancel the auto renewal when I initially set up my account, they refused to give me a refund. Varsity tutor is online tutoring provider that my daughter used to learn Spanish. Her tutor kept changing schedules and we missed some sessions and wasnt be able to make up. She also missed half of August already and they charged again on August 24th for next 30 days and wouldnt refund for next month. I think it is clear from the many complaints before mine, that this company has a strong track record of charging your credit card without your knowledge or agreement ... and making it impossible to be refunded. In my case I signed up my daughter for 4 sessions for $349. The day before the first session, the tutor emailed us to say that he could not provide the type of tutoring she wanted and recommended that she find it at her University, to which he provided a link. He canceled his ****** with her and advised her to find a different tutor, which we did. I contacted Varsity Tutors to get a refund. They claimed that because I had to cancel the services a week in advance, and had not, I was still liable for the charge - EVEN THOUGH THEIR TUTOR HAD CANCELED THE SESSION, TOLD US HE COULD NOT TEACH WHAT SHE NEEDED AND RECOMMENDED A DIFFERENT SERVICE WHICH WE USED! Purchased tutoring through Varsity Tutors for our grandson. The tutor hed been working with didnt show up for a session two weeks ago. After waiting 30 minutes he hung up. It happened again this week. I called Varsity Tutors again. WE RECEIVED NO NOTIFICATION FROM VARSITY TUTORS!! NONE!! Two consecutive weeks! I asked for a refund for the three sessions we had already paid for. They wanted my grandson to reschedule with a different tutor. I told them absolutely not. Varity tutors is unethical. They say you can cancel at any time! And when you cancel with a tutor and say Im done, like done when the school year ends, they will still charge you monthly until you call a secret phone number. I signed up for the Varsity Tutors service for one month (8 hours total) with a phone representative. Tutoring hours for my daughter were Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. I also explained to the representative at the time that we were only doing one month because my daughter would then return to school; she also dances 5 nights a week and has piano and Spanish tutoring, so we could not possibly book tutoring for longer than the 8 hours worth of tutoring that we signed up for. On Friday, August 15th--one day before the last tutoring session that I had already paid for with the 639 dollar package--I was charged another 639 dollars for the following month. I immediately called the number provided when I signed up *************) to get reimbursed, since 1) there was no mention of autopay on the phone when I signed up, 2) I expressly noted that our family could only schedule one month of tutoring on the phone when I signed up and I was told that was fine, 3) we would not use the hours for the second 639 charge, and 4) there was no email or alert that I was about to be charged another 639 dollars. On the phone, the representative told me that no refunds could be given after charge, per company policy--even for hours that are unused and same day charges. They also told me that I could not be transferred to a supervisor, that they could not give me the name, email, or number for any supervisor or accounts manager, and that a team would review my case about whether I would get a refund or not and without any communication to me, their decision would be final. Ultimately, the sales person I spoke to when I signed up for the service mislead me about the single month charge for 8 hours and the second 639 dollar amount was charged before completion of the first 8 hours. With company policy stated to me as no refunds are given ever, even for services not used, this is a predatory practice.Business Response

I am writing to formally request a refund for charges incurred on my account for the months of May, June, and July 2025, despite having canceled tutoring services with Varsity Tutors in April.We enrolled our daughter in Math tutoring for approximately one year and our son in English tutoring for one month, both under a month-to-month contract. In April, we contacted Varsity Tutors' customer service to cancel all tutoring services as our family was traveling abroad and might resume sessions upon our return. We also notified the assigned tutor *********** no point were we informed that charges would continue despite our cancellation and non-usage. Upon reviewing our credit card statements, we discovered that we were billed for three months during which no tutoring sessions or materials were accessed. A Varsity Tutors staff member later confirmed that our account showed no activity during this period.Please note that the credit card used for these payments is a joint account shared between my husband and me. For your reference, I have attached the copies of our credit card statement.Given that we were on a month-to-month contract and did not use any services, I respectfully request a full refund for the charges made in May, June, and July. I have reviewed the business' response and am rejecting it because:I have not received the full refund I am entitled to.
I did not receive any calls from Varsity Tutors, although I acknowledge that the network in my office is unreliable, so its possible I may have missed one. I received a one-month refund on August 18th, followed by an email titled Client Refund Survey on August 20th, to which I responded requesting a full refund.
Varsity provided the contact information for their Experience Manager, and Im happy to discuss the matter further. However, I was unable to locate a phone number in their recent email.
Given these circumstances and the fact that services were not used during the months billed, I am formally requesting a full refund.
