I contacted Varsity Tutors on 6/1/25 about tutoring services for my high school student who doesnt live with me full time. I spoke to a sales representative who pitched this whole program and highlighted all the extensive student support etc. etc. I was NEVER told during that sales / set up call that the hours purchased expire at the end of each month and do not carry over. My daughter was on summer vacation when I purchased this tutoring 7/1/25 rolls around I look at my credit card theres a charge for $635 from Varsity Tutors and Im thinking that cant be right theres no way she finished those 8 hours already she just got back from out of the country . I find out she has done 0 hours she hasnt even logged into the account yet teenagers! So I call varsity tutors and explain the situation I tell them look I will share responsibility here and take the hit for the initial charge of $435 June 1 and Ill loose those 8 hours but I would like a refund of the second $435 as 0 hours have been used and Ill get singed back up once my teen is ready and locked in . They responded basically NO said I cannot get a refund and I lost the hours and they may consider an extension on the 8 hours for 7/1/25 but its not guaranteed and I have to wait 48 hours for a response. But if they did not grant me an extension on the hours then Im just SOL . I never received that follow up they promised I then had to call back again and got the same response and am now waiting again to see but no refund ! I also asked for a supervisor or manager or another point of contact to escalate this .. and was told NO . I asked for the name and employee # and he would not give me any info other than his first name ****** . No last name, no company ID number, no manager or supervisor. Seems like robbery for a company to charge over $1300 and be unwilling to understand circumstances when they can see the account had literally never been used !!Business Response

I purchased a tutoring package from Varsity Tutors for my professional certification in the amount of $5,472. This package was intended to support my preparation for the remaining three licensure exams and included 12 hours of tutoring as well as access to on-demand learning services such as diagnostic exams and practice questions. However, one of the four exam sections underwent a significant change. It was restructured into a discipline-specific exam, offering candidates a choice among three different subject areas. Given that this is a newly introduced section, there are currently limited resources available to adequately prepare.Despite this, I was assured by Varsity Tutorsboth verbally and contractuallythat I would receive full tutoring support and access to on-demand learning resources for all exam sections, including the new discipline-specific one. Unfortunately, the subject area I selected did not include the promised on-demand services, and the tutors were not adequately equipped to support this new material.Due to the lack of appropriate resources and qualified tutoring for this section, I ultimately decided not to proceed with the tutoring for it and requested a partial refund of $1,800. This request was based on the fact that the services I was promised could not be delivered in full. Despite bringing this issue to customer service multiple times and clearly outlining the discrepancy, I was told that nothing more could be done. This experience has been incredibly frustrating and disheartening, especially given the financial investment I made to help advance my career. I believe a partial refund is a reasonable request under the circumstances.Business Response

I spoke with multiple agents over the course of the past few months about issues with Varsity Tutors, namely multiple incidents in which my son was left waiting for half an hour or more waiting for a tutor that never logged on. I expressly remember discussing with one male agent who pushed me to pause the membership so we could use up the remaining hours but assured me that once the membership was paused, it would not renew again and that this would result in what I'd wanted in the first place, a full cancellation. The pause only stayed in effect for around two months; I received a billing charge today despite the fact that I'd spoken with an agent who told me I wouldn't have to worry about this happening. I called with Varsity Tutors about this problem and their email response is somewhere along the lines of "we can't give you a refund per our terms of service" (which, for the record, don't even load on any of our devices). So not only has my son not been able to use the hours that we paid for because of consistent absences from tutors, but we have been charged for another round of hours despite my conversation with multiple agents about cancellations.I can forward proof of tutors consistently being absent during my son's membership, though we weren't even able to document every instance because there were so many.Business Response

To Whom It May Concern,Im filing a complaint against Varsity Tutors for inconsistent communication, poor customer service, and unfair treatment regarding our use of a Folds of Honor scholarship. We were told that once the scholarship was applied, wed have full access to the platform, and the only difference would be that wed need to call in to register for classes. After Varsity Tutors received the funds, they changed their policy and now refuse to serve us unless we keep a credit card on fileeven though the scholarship fully covers the same amount as a paying customer.Weve been given conflicting information from multiple representatives, and when I voiced my frustration publicly about the misinformation and lack of accountability, Varsity Tutors blocked me on social media instead of addressing the issue.Their only resolution was to refund the scholarship rather than honor the original agreement. This feels unethical and dismissive of families using veteran scholarships to support their children's education. Im requesting accountability for how weve been treated and transparency in their policies.Business Response

Thank you for the response regarding our complaint against Varsity Tutors.
We understand that Varsity Tutors claims they have returned the scholarship funds to Folds of Honor. However, we have not received any confirmation or documentation of this refund. We have since contacted Folds of Honor directly, and they informed us that they have no record of a refund at this time and are actively looking into the matter.
Its important to note that the issue is not solely about the refund. The heart of the problem lies in the repeated misinformation we received from Varsity Tutors and their refusal to honor a veterans scholarship after initially agreeing to do so. Their claim of being accommodating does not reflect the reality of our experience. Instead, we were met with contradictory information, shifting policies, and ultimately blocked on social media for voicing our concerns publicly.
While we understand the relationship may not be repairable at this point, we do expect proper documentation confirming that the funds were returned to Folds of Honor as stated. Until that is received, this matter remains unresolved.Initial Complaint

I was just scammed out of $1200 dollars for services that were never fulfilled in which I signed up for. I was assisted over the phone by a sales *** who informed me of the one time charge of $****** for 8 hours of tutoring for the month of June. No one informed me that this was going to be a membership when I spoke with the sales associate. I had 8 sessions and only used 2 which 1 of the 2 session's my tutor fired herself and credited back that session due to what I needed to learn on excel was out of her scope. Varsity tutors still has yet to find me a tutor that can assist me with the type of training I was lead to believe they had the ability to help me with, when I originally decided to move forward with payment. I had already considered this a lost of money when today I see a charge for an additional ******. When I called Varsity tutors their support team refused to help me in anyway saying I signed their contract for a membership. I asked if they can pull the recorded call because I was helped by their sales associate who walked me through that contract and was reassured this was for the 8 hour/sessions only. No one mentioned a membership anytime during the phone call. At this point I told them I don't even want the refund for the 7 other sessions I still have yet to receive but that this payment taken today on June 27th needs to be refunded back. Varsity tutors refused to assist any further stating they would cancel my membership and thats all they could do. The website and the sales *** are very misleading in what they are able to offer as well as the cost for the service. The company would not allow me to speak with a supervisor or anyone else to dispute this matter. At this time I want the full amount refunded back due to the company's lack of interest to assist with this matter at all.Business Response

I am filing a complaint against Varsity Tutors for misrepresentation of services, poor academic support, lack of professionalism, review suppression, and difficulty with cancellation. I paid $639 for calculus tutoring in May 2025 and received services that failed to meet basic expectations. On May 6, 2025, I enrolled for help with college calculus. I was promised expert, personalized support. Instead, the tutor constantly canceled or rescheduled due to a second job. The few sessions I attended were disorganized and unhelpful. I failed the course and am now forced to retake it. After another bad session, I tried to cancel on May 20. I couldnt reach anyone by phone and had to send multiple emails before getting a reply three days later. When I finally spoke with someoneafter being sent a direct numberI was pressured to stay enrolled and told to transfer my remaining hours to a family member. I had to insist multiple times before they finally canceled my accountall within the same month I started. The platform also featured games and digital tools that were irrelevant to my coursework and never used by me or my family. Though promoted as helpful, they added zero value to my tutoring. After this frustrating experience, I posted a fair, detailed review. Varsity Tutors removed it, claiming it wasnt genuine. Thats a lie. My review was 100% truthful and based on my lived experience. Instead of resolving the issue, they pressured me to add more detail instead of offering a refund. That felt like intimidationnot support. Worse, I used money my parents loaned me to pay for this service. I cant afford to repay them while also covering college expenses. This turned an academic failure into a financial one too. I am requesting a full refund of $639 due to poor tutoring, false promises, lack of access to help, pressure during cancellation, and removal of my honest review. I was misled, failed, silenced, and financially harmed. Varsity Tutors should be held accountable.Business Response

I paid for 8 tutoring sessions. Was not informed that this was a reoccurring charge. I was charged for a second set of 8 sessions, which I did not request. i called 3 days after noticing the charge hit my card and was told they have a strict no refund policy.I only used 4 of my initial 8 sessions, but was then billed for an additional 8. they are unwilling to refund the second charge.Business Response

I called Varsity Tutoring on May 20th or 21st to setup tutoring for my high school aged daughter. It was very disappointing because it was virtual only, but we decided to use the company anyway. I was told that it would be $349 for 4 hrs. and nothing was ever discussed about a membership fee or that it would be recurring. Then today 6/20I received a pending charge from my bank for $868.14. I called Varsity Tutoring on the phone and they told me that they were charging another membership fee of $349, plus $519.14 for 4 hrs. from last month. I was told the $349.00 ($87.25 hr.) is also owed. Now they are saying that was the membership fee that they failed to disclose. Not only was this not as helpful as we hoped, but we ended up using Mathnasium Round Rock which was in person and $400. for 5 hrs.. (80 hr.) which I thought was a better price because it wasn't just virtual. Looking on line from employees on **** today, they state that Varsity Charges $60 an hour, which makes me feel like I over paid as well for the $349 amount. With the pending charge to my bank, it will be a total of $1217.14 paid for 5 hrs. of tutoring which is criminal without consent. I am very disappointed that I was charged a membership fee after stating that we only needed tutoring for two days, being charged for 4 hours of tutoring that was never used, being charged for a new membership renewal fee and charging my bank account without sending a written letter for approval of charges.Business Response
