In August of 2024, when I was 17 years old, a minor, I needed to find tutoring to study for my ACT. I spoke with a representative over the phone, who assured me that I would be paying $299 for the 4 hour tutoring services within the month, which was all that I needed because my exam date was directly following. I was NOT made aware that this would be a reoccurring monthly payment. It is not clearly disclosed when registering, nor was it disclosed by the representative. Over the past year, I was unaware of the continuous charges on my credit card. I have not received any emails noticing me of the reoccurring subscription as well. The charges over the last year have added up to $4,485. When I called customer service to explain, they had no sympathy and refused to issue a refund even though it was CLEAR on my account that the last time I used their services was September 11, 2024. I requested to speak with someone who is higher up in the company and they had stated that they couldnt give me any information. I am only asking for a refund for the hours that I have not used, which would only be fair because I was led to believe that I would only be paying for the four hours of tutoring leading up to my exam. Especially as a minor who was simply trying to score high on her exam, I feel deceived by this company.Business Response

September 1, 2025 I have been a client for over 3 years. Last Spring my daughter had a 2x a month package and we added more as needed. We stopped for the Summer and were told we could start back up when we were ready in the Fall. I called to start back up and was told to buy the 4x a month package as it was on a discount at the time. I explained we may not need that many hours but were strong armed into that. So we agreed but have only used 2 hours this month so currently paid for 4 sessions and did 2 sessions this month. I called and asked to please go back to 2x a month and they said they would no longer offer me that as I stopped over the Summer. So they are insisting and saying I can only go forward by paying for 4 sessions a month, which we will never use so essentialy they are now charging me double for each session and will give me no other option.Customer Answer

I contacted Varsity Tutors to assist with tutoring my autistic son with reading, writing and math. I was assured that this company can handle the challenge of my sons short attention span. I was told that the tutors had special education backgrounds. I requested only 30 minutes sessions on Saturday and Sundays from 12-2p (due to my sons attention deficit). We completed our first session with ****** (mid August). The sessions ended at my request because he kept canceling/ changing the session times. I was then switched to April (early September). Again, the first session was completed. She did not show for the other sessions. I contacted Varsity Tutors to complain and was offered another tutor change. I declined due to the companys failure to deliver quality services after two attempts. I complained that I felt as though mine and my sons time and my money was wasted. I requested a refund for the unused 3 hours and was told that I could not get a refund due to the policy. I replied with to ******** **** on the escalation team with: I am appalled at the rigidness and unfairness of this company. This is ludicrous. There should be a time that your policy is waived for customer satisfaction. The issue is that your tutors are not showing up past the first session. I have accepted your offer to have a tutor change after the first incident and the issue remained with the new tutor. This is an inconsiderate way of doing business in which the customer is kept in a loop of switching out tutors to compensate a failure/flaw on your end. My and sons time and money has been wasted! And I certainly feel scammed. I will voice my opinion throughout the web of this service and give a poor rating so that others do not fall into this trap. This is down right wrong! I am requesting my money to be refunded!Business Response

On September 19, 2025, I contacted Varsity Tutors to inquire about tutoring support for my daughters upcoming exam in Mdecine macroscopique Anatomie et physiologie. I spoke with ********, a sales representative, who assured me that Varsity Tutors could provide a French-speaking pre-med tutor with the required subject ************ no point during the purchase process was the Terms of Service document provided or discussed. Most importantly, ******** explicitly stated that the tutoring package she was offering included a full refund for any unused hours. This assurance was a key factor in my decision to proceed. Based on her representation, I purchased a 4-hour Live 1:1 tutoring package for $****** daughter clearly communicated her need for a tutor knowledgeable in medical anatomy and physiology. Despite these specific requirements, the tutor assigned for the first session on September 22 did not meet the expected level of proficiency. The session was unsatisfactory, and we chose not to proceed with a second meeting.Per Varsity Tutors Professional Satisfaction Guarantee, and based on the verbal assurances I requested a refund of $321 for the three unused hours, but a representative from the Client Experience and Payments Team refused to honor this request. This is a clear case of misrepresentation and poor business practice. I am seeking BBB assistance to hold Varsity Tutors accountable to its verbal assurances and published refund policy, and to secure the refund for the unused tutoring hours. I signed up for a monthly tutoring package (roughly $700 per month) on my parent's credit card. I did not use the package for a year and did not cancel the service (shame on me). I reached a settlement agreement where they refunded a reasonable portion of the membership but still kept probably $2K--$3K for not scheduling one session. As part of the settlement, I was using the service for 2 hour per week and the sessions went well. I have no complaints about the tutors. Varsity Tutors had a system glitch where I was not marked active in the system which stopped the tutoring sessions. I had to call and get the sessions reinstated. However, the system glitch continued where I log in to the session and the tutor was not there.I am seeking credit for remaining 25 hours ($75 PER HOUR) of $1,875. I also think they should be required to call clients where there are charging a membership fee but are not scheduling tutors at least quarterly which would have saved me several thousand dollars.Thanks.Business Response

On July *******, I submitted a request to cancel our monthly membership with Varsity Tutors via their customer service email. I received a response asking for emails tied to the account. I sent this and was later asked again for the same information. I continued to follow up and was then changed for another month. I called customer service who said they had no documentation of my request and I was denied a refund. The email used to send this to me was the same email address I initially used to request my refund, confirming accuracy. I sent a follow up message to them showing the string of requests, which they asked to see, and I have still been denied.Business Response

I enrolled with Varsity Tutors (***********) in January 2024. On February 16, 2024, I emailed to cancel, explaining that my first ***** no-showed two sessions and my second ***** couldnt help because she lacked the required Excel add-in; my course ended a week later, so I no longer needed *****ing. Instead of cancelling, I was persuaded to pause. I was not told the pause would auto-expire or that billing would resume without my explicit consent. There was no charge in March 2024 (consistent with a pause), but without any clear notice that the pause ended, Varsity resumed charging in April 2024 and billed me monthly through ****** 2025totaling $6,642for services I did not intend to use and largely did not use. When I contacted support on September 8, 2025, I was told they likely wouldnt refund even the ****** charge. This is unfair: I made a clear cancellation request, was steered into a pause, and then charged long-term without conspicuous notice or affirmative consent to restart. I request (1) a full refund of all charges after February 16, 2024 through ****** 2025 (currently totaling $6,500+), (2) immediate cancellation with written confirmation that no further billing will occur, and (3) a written record of when my account was un-paused and copies/timestamps of any notices Varsity claims it sent. I can provide my February 16 cancel email, monthly statements showing no charge in March and continuous charges April 2024****** 2025, and the September 8 support transcript.Business Response

I am filing a complaint against Varsity Tutors regarding an unauthorized charge and refusal to issue a refund. On August 7, 2025, I purchased an 8-hour all-inclusive tutoring package for $639.00. During the enrollment process, I clearly communicated to the representative that I only intended to use the service for one month. I was assured that this would not be an issue and that the program would not automatically renew. However, on September 7, 2025, I was billed for a second cycle, even though my membership status clearly stated:Aug 06, 2025 - Sep 06, 2025 Not Auto Renewing.I have not used any tutoring services since September 6, 2025. Upon noticing the unauthorized charge, I immediately contacted Varsity Tutors to request a refund. My request was denied. I was told that I should have canceled before the billing date, which directly contradicts what I was originally told by the representative at the time of purchase. Had I known this, I would have taken appropriate action to avoid further charges. This feels like a case of misrepresentation and poor business practice. I was charged for services I did not use and did not agree to continue. I relied on the verbal assurance provided during the sales call and the membership term that explicitly stated the program would not auto-renew.I am requesting a full refund of $639.00 for the charge made on September 7, 2025 for services that were neither used nor authorized.Customer Answer
