The company has taken $9<648.00 in deposits from my checking account to pay off a debt of $46,000. Over four months they have taken out $5171.35 in fees and not paid off any of the debtors on the list. There is a balance for the remainder that they say iis for negotiating down the debt. there is not any money left for debt payment after their fees. I have asked them to deactivate the acount and refund the balance to avoid further indebtedness. I want a refund of the total $9648Business Response

Thank you for the opportunity to respond to ***** *******' concerns. Freedom Debt Relief disagrees with the allegations outlined in the complaint. We have attempted to contact Ms. ******* to discuss the matters regarding settlement fees collected for services provided.
Settlement Fees will be collected for services provided only once a settlement is obtained, the settlement is authorized by the member, and the first payment is made to the creditor.
Freedom Debt Relief obtained two settlements while Ms. ******* was enrolled in the debt relief program. In that time, we collected settlement fees for services provided. We encourage ********** to reach out to her point of contact to discuss any further questions or concerns.Initial Complaint

I am writing to formally file a complaint against a company called Freedom Debt Relief, which I believe has engaged in deceptive and misleading business practices. Before enrolling in their program, I was led to believe that I would save a significant amount of money on the total debt I owed and that their services would help me become debt-free with only a minimal and temporary impact on my credit score. At the time, my credit score was approximately 550.However, six months into the program, despite making the required payments as instructed by the company, my credit score dropped by 100 points. This decline occurred even though I had been following their guidelines closely. Prior to enrollment, I had a 99% on-time payment history and was well below the recommended credit utilization rate. Freedom Debt Relief explicitly instructed me to stop making payments and avoid communication with creditors advice that directly caused my credit to suffer dramatically.Additionally, I feel I was seriously misled about the financial benefit of the program. The company emphasized that I would save a large percentage on my debts, but in reality, they took a substantial portion of any settlements as their fees, leaving me with far less financial relief than promised. It has become painfully clear that the only party truly benefiting from this arrangement is Freedom Debt Relief.I now find myself in a far worse financial position than before I entered their program. My credit has been significantly damaged, my utilization rate is much higher, and my payment history has suffered. I deeply regret ever engaging with this company and feel their presentation of the program was both deceptive and damaging.I am requesting that the BBB investigate this matter and hold Freedom Debt Relief accountable for their misleading practices. I also hope that this complaint serves as a warning to others who may be considering working with them.Business Response

I enrolled in a program to pay off debts with Freedom Debt Relief. I paid a surplus into my dedicated account for them to negotiate on my behalf and pay off credit cards and pay thier settlement fees and monthly fees. I made sure to put enough into my dedicated account to take care of all fees and debts. My last credit card was paid on 4/30/2025 which I understand the payment takes some time to clear. I was told by customer service the payment cleared 05/07/2025 which would put me into the completion phase of the program. ALL of my negotiated debts and settlement fees have been PAID. They will not refund the surplus of money that is left over in my account of about $315.00. **************** stated I entered the completion phase 05/13/2025. It has been over a month of them holding on to my money. I had $325.00 but they take out monthly fees every month, and on this track they will take another $10 every month even though I have settled all of my debt, I have paid all of their settlement fees. I am just trying to get the overage of money I paid into my account back to my personal bank account. But they are giving me no information on when I will be getting it back and keep running me around in circles. On top of all this they are still trying to take $320 out of my personal bank account each month even though everything is already paid.Business Response

On May 30th Freedom Debt Relief was provided $1422.55 from my bank account to pay creditor (Integra) in full. On June 5th the creditor (Integra) received only $161.07 and not the full amount to payoff agreement. When I called Freedom Debt Relief they said it would take another month before processing payoff. My response to that was why did you not pay the creditor off? Freedom Debt relief stated it would take another month to process!! Why are they holding the money? The creditor reported my account negatively as past due on my credit report when they should have been paid off and not reflected negatively. This hurt my credit score in purchasing a home.Business Response

I am rejecting this response because: the matter still listed on credit report because the money was still in Freedom Debt account on 23rd day of June! They have had the money since May 30.Also, they claimed they called me to say amount was short $30 but I was the one who called them to see where money was and why it wasn't paid. It was Freedom Debt relief that was short money, not the creditor's amount that should have been paid. off!!
Sincerely,

I signed up with Freedom Debt Relief to consolidate my credit card debts.Everything sounded great initially They were not clear about their fees .I was under the assumption that the fees were included in the monthly payments. After being diligent with my payments to resolve my credit.I received an email that they settled my first debt and that I would be saving *********************************** they took 1300 as a fee .Which means I lost that money.I couldve paid my credit card directly if I was made aware of the terms clearly at the beginning.I feel their practice is ************* could it be that a company that knows your trying to get out of debt would not inform you at the beginning that they would take so much of your money.I would have never signed up for that .They are deceptive in their advertising and their customer service is also deceptive. They took 1300 dollars and only paid 400 of my debt I would like a resolution of a refund as they never discussed properly how their fees work.Which should be the most important thing you discuss clearly with a new client struggling with debt.An absolutely nightmare experience I can provide additional information if needed.Business Response

Freedom Debt Relief disagrees with ******'s allegations set forth in the BBB complaint. I am rejecting this response becauseThey never gave me a clear and concise mentioning of the fees. I had no idea they were gonna be taking out so much money. I think its very important. That companies be transparent with what these fees are and hidden fees, cause its not fair to the customer. Explaining their fees s*** in the top priority when I started to think about going into their program because as it pertains to now, I wouldve never signed up for something like this. Its just very deceptive and just not fair please. The amount of fee that they were gonna be taking shouldve been the first priority when I was initially speaking with the representative.. they only paid 400 off my credit card bill and they took $1400
When I signed up initially, they sent me a false email saying that they saved me through 13 or 1700 off my Discover card but thats not the truth because they took 1300. So basically Ive saved part anything and my credit is now still in the toilet and I feel like its just gonna be an uphill battle with that using them. Ive already taken action to pay off my other cards on my own because these fees are astronomical and the fact that it wasnt explained clear and concisely at the initial meeting speaking with the representative just think its just for business.
Sincerely,
****** *******Business Response

Based on my discussions with your team, I was under the impression that your company could effectively negotiate with credit unions. However, in my case, the ************ declined to engage in negotiations, and I was advised to either remove the debit from my account or obtain a loan to cover the balance. Additionally, I was informed that information regarding the interest rate for the proposed loan would not be available, making it difficult for me to make an informed financial decision. This situation left me in a challenging position, and I felt uncomfortable with the guidance provided. I trust that your company is committed to assisting customers in achieving fair and workable resolutions. I would appreciate the opportunity to speak with a manager to discuss this matter further and explore alternative solutions.Business Response

I have been a client of freedom debt relief for over 2 years. I have one large debt of $44,706.00 left that needs to be settled. I have been trying to get this settled for over two months. Freedom debt relief representatives provide conflicting information every time I call. For example, we need $11,000 in your account to settle this debt (I promptly do this). Next call we need 3 to 4 weeks to resolve. Next call we can settle the debt for about half the original amount but you will need to have $22,354 in your account for us to proceed (I did this), Next call, it will take $30,000 to settle the debt not half. Next call, we can probably settle debt for half but we will need $26,000 in your account to proceed (I did this). We cannot start negotiating unless you continue to make regular payments, but on a previous call I was told to stop making regular payments. Next call, in addition to the $26,000 in your account, we will need another $10,000 settlement fee. in your account. Each time I call a representative of the Company the story changes and they ask for more money. I have told Freedom Debt Relief that if the best they can do is resolve a $44,000 debt for $36,000 I want my money back. No response from the Company to this. Freedom Debt Relief is holding a large amount of my money hostage. I cannot resolve this with Freedom Debt Relief. They just keep asking for more money. I do not know where to turn. I have proceeded in good faith with FDR and I feel I am a victim of consumer fraud and dishonest business practices.Business Response

Freedom debt relief, promised a lot the first year & half, it was great, they would notify me when it was time to review and negotiate a debt most of the time I would agree with the offer, but I thought. I was doing nicely until I started getting loans. Offer from Freedom Debt Relief. At first, I just paid no mind, until I was talking with customer service, and they just sent me to the loan department to see if I would qualify for a loan. I said no, I don't want a loan, I'm doing fine the way it's going. That's when I started having trouble. It started taking longer, Negotiation progress, then I had one of my credit cards decide to take me to court, so I notified Freedom Debt Relief, it took me a good 2 weeks to get someone working on this two days before court, they finally started Negotiation with them, I was Notified, I needed a good faith payment of $750.00 one time payment and then my payment would be ****** each month I did tell them that I can't incress my payment anymore then they are at $544.00 now. A month later, I'm told in an email from ******** Law, who works with Freedom Debt Relief, that I need to sign the documents in agreement to good faith payment and monthly payments, and they need it now. They would make me run around in circles trying to get anything done, just making me even angrier. I'd sit and cry while I was on hold. I'm trapped in this because they have you stop payments on all the Debt you enter into this program. I didn't think I had any choice but to try this to get out of Debt. I thought this would teach me not to overextend myself like I did to start all this trouble to begin with. But this has become the biggest Headache ever! It's just getting worse. I just don't know what to do. I thought they were going to help, but that's not the case anymore. Now they want me to start paying ***** more a month, I don't have to give, they should have been taking care that none of this would have happened.Business Response

I started with Freedom Debt 8/2019 to pay off my credit card debt. I agreed to pay $474 per month for 53 months. My last payment should have been Jan. of 2024 but I am still paying. I have called once or twice and also emailed several times to complain but usually do not get any response. The payment comes out of my checking account automatically. I just don't understand why it is going so much longer than I was told and they have never told me. As far as I can tell, my last payment might be 8/2025 which means I will have paid around $8500 more than I was expecting to pay.Business Response
