I purchased a membership to classmates.com for my 50th reunion purposes. That reunion was September of 2023, after which I canceled my membership from automatically renewing. On February 17th of 2024, my membership was automatically renewed to the amount of $21.60. I have been in communication with this company and they are refusing to refund my money despite the fact that I canceled my automatic renewal in September of last year.

      Complaint number: 21536362
      Consumer name: ****************************************

We are in receipt of the Better Business Bureau Complaint filed by ********************************* regarding her Classmates+ membership subscription.

According to our records, ********************************* has two accounts on the Classmates website:

Registration Number **********: This membership was created on March 13, 2009, using the email address ******************************** This account is currently a free Classmates membership, however, ********************************* had a paid 3-month automatically renewing membership subscription on this account that expired on February 9, 2024. Once the paid subscription expired, this membership reverted to free account.

Registration Number ***********: This membership was created on January 12, 2014, using the email address ***************** ********************************* purchased a 3-month automatically renewing paid membership on this account on May 17, 2023. This paid membership has renewed every 3-months since the purchase date and is the subject of ************************ complaint.

A copy of her membership records is attached for your review.

Classmates provides clear disclosures within the paid membership process that fee-based memberships will automatically renew. Below, I have outlined the process and the various places in which Classmates notified ******************************** of the Automatic Renewal Program.

As noted above, ********************************* purchased a 50% discounted 3-month auto-renewing paid membership on May 17, 2023, in the amount of $10.80. On the payment information page of the paid membership purchase process, prior to completing her purchase, ********************************* was specifically notified that her membership fees were non-refundable, that her membership would automatically renew for the same term each time it reached its expiration date unless she chose to cancel, that her payment method would be charged the full term price of $21.60 for each renewal period, and that she could visit the Account portion of the website to change her renewal settings at any time. ********************************* was presented with language on this same page stating that, by clicking the button to purchase, he agreed to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy (with hyperlinks to each).

The "Automatic Renewal Program" section located under the ***** Services" portion of the Terms of Service states:

"Upon your acceptance of an offer for the purchase of any subscription-based **** Services, you will be enrolled in our automatic renewal program to help ensure that there is no interruption in your access to such **** Services. Under this program, you authorize us to automatically renew your subscription at the end of the term of the subscription you purchased, and each subsequent term, for the same term length of the subscription you initially purchased (unless otherwise stated in the offer you accepted). Unless you change your renewal status as described below, at the time of each such renewal you authorize us to charge your designated Payment Method at the then-current, non-promotional price (unless otherwise stated in the offer you accepted) for the renewal of your subscription. If you no longer want to be enrolled in our automatic renewal program, you can change your renewal status at any time by logging onto the Account portion of the Classmates.com Website, clicking on "Account & Billing" and changing your renewal option from "automatic"to "manual." Please note that completing these steps will only stop future automatic renewals of your current subscription and will not impact any automatic renewals that occurred prior to the date that you completed these steps.

And the No Refund Policy section located under the ***** Services"portion of the Terms of Service states:

All fees relating to **** Services, including the initial fees and any subsequent automatic renewal fees (as described above), are non-refundable. If you initiate a chargeback or otherwise reverse a payment made with your Payment Method, we may in our discretion cancel your **** Services immediately. If we successfully dispute the reversal, and the reversed funds are returned to us,you are not *********** a refund or to have your **** Services reinstated.

Shortly thereafter, ********************************* would have received a paid subscription confirmation email sent to the email addresses associated with her account. This receipt email contained ************************************* membership registration number, the amount ********************************* paid for her membership subscription, her renewal date, and a reminder that her paid subscription would renew unless she chose to cancel by visiting the Account portion of the website prior to her renewal date and that no portion of any subscription fee was refundable.

The "Account" section is accessible from nearly every page of the Classmates website and is located under the My Classmates drop down navigation menu in the top righthand portion of the webpage. When a member clicks on Account, they will see an "Account & Billing" section listed on the page. Once the member logs into their account, they are presented with information about their paid account, including the length of the term, the expiration date, and their renewal option being listed as Automatic. If they wish to switch to manual renewal, they simply have to click on the Turn off automatic renewal link.

According to our records, ********************************* did not opt out of the automatic renewal program or contact the Classmates ********************** prior to her renewal date in connection with this membership. As a result, her membership was renewed for an additional term and her payment method was charged $21.60 on August 17, 2023 and every three months thereafter in accordance with the disclosures and the Terms of Service that she agreed to during her May 17, 2023 purchase.

According to the Classmates Terms of Service, Classmates has a no refund policy. However, since ********************************* has duplicate accounts, I have provided her with a one-time courtesy refund of her last membership fee in the amount of $21.60 on April 10, 2024. ********************************* should note this refund on her physical billing statement within the next ***** days (or sooner if she banks online), depending on her financial institutions billing cycle and internal refund policies. Additionally, I have gone ahead and deleted this duplicate membership account under registration number ***********.

********************************* should now have only one Classmates account under registration number **********. As noted above, this membership is currently a free Classmates account.

This information should successfully resolve ************************************* complaint. Should your office or ********************************* have any questions or need additional information, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

      Sincerely,

      ***********************

I am requesting my refund of $99.00 that Classmates.com took from my Paypal account on 1 April 2024. They did not send me any email notifications prior to this automatic renewal which I would have cancelled ahead of time because I have no need for continued membership in this organization. I am 77 years old and most of my classmates have passed away. I emailed Classmates.com immediately once I saw that this money was taken from my account.I am a permanently disabled veteran and can no longer work. This deduction has put a financial strain on my very limited funds for this month.

We are in receipt of the Better Business Bureau Complaint filed by ************ in connection with her paid Classmates+ membership subscription.

Classmates provides clear disclosures within the paid membership process that fee-based memberships will automatically renew. Below, I have outlined the process and the various places in which Classmates notified ************ of the Automatic Renewal Program.

On April 1, 2022, ************ purchased an introductory 50% discounted 2-year automatically renewing paid membership in the amount of $48.00. On the payment information page of the paid membership purchase process, prior to completing her purchase, ************ was specifically notified that her membership would automatically renew for the same term each time it reached its expiration date unless she chose to cancel, that her payment method would be charged $96.00 for each renewal, and that she could visit the Account portion of the website to change her automatic renewal preference at any time. ************ was presented with language on this same page stating that, by clicking the button to purchase, she agreed to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy (with hyperlinks to each). A representative copy of the standard 2-year purchase page is attached for your review.

The "Automatic Renewal Program" section located under the ***** Services" portion of the Terms of Service at the time of ************,purchase stated:

Upon your acceptance of an offer for the purchase of any subscription-based **** Services, you will be enrolled in our automatic renewal program to help ensure that there is no interruption in your access to such **** Services.Under this program, you authorize us to automatically renew your subscription at the end of the term of the subscription you purchased, and each subsequent term, for the same term length of the subscription you initially purchased (unless otherwise stated in the offer you accepted). If you no longer want to be enrolled in our automatic renewal program, you can change your renewal status at any time by logging onto the Account portion of the Classmates.com Website, clicking on "Account & Billing" and changing your renewal option from "automatic" to "manual." Please note that completing these steps will only stop future automatic renewals of your current subscription and will not impact any automatic renewals that occurred prior to the date that you completed these steps.

And the No Refund Policy section located under the ***** Services" portion of the Terms of Service states:

All fees relating to **** Services, including the initial fees and any subsequent automatic renewal fees (as described above), are non-refundable. If you initiate a chargeback or otherwise reverse a payment made with your Payment Method, we may in our discretion cancel your **** Services immediately. If we successfully dispute the reversal, and the reversed funds are returned to us,you are not *********** a refund or to have your **** Services reinstated.

Shortly thereafter, ************ would have received a paid subscription confirmation email receipt sent to the email address associated with her account. This email contained **************** membership registration number, the amount ************ paid for her paid membership, her renewal date, and a reminder that her paid subscription would renew unless she chose to cancel by visiting the Account portion of the website prior to her renewal date.

The "Account" section is accessible from nearly every page of the Classmates website and is located in the top portion of the webpage underneath the My Classmates drop-down navigation menu. Underneath the Accountheading they will see an "Account & Billing" link. Once the member clicks on the link and logs into their account, they are presented with information about their paid account, including the length of the term, the expiration date, and their renewal option being listed as Automatic. If they wish to switch to manual renewal, they simply have to click on the Turn off automatic renewal link.

Classmates sends all members in a membership subscription term one year or longer an Automatic Renewal Reminder. Classmates sent ************ this renewal reminder on February 22, 2024 to the email address associated with her account, which is the same email address as listed in her complaint. A screen shot showing the email send history from Classmates email systems to ************ is attached for your review.

This reminder email provided information that ************** 2-year paid membership subscription would automatically renew on April 1, 2024 unless she changed her renewal status prior to renewal date and that her membership would renew in the amount of $96.00. The renewal reminder included instructions on how to remove her account from automatic renewal as well as a phone number and a link to contact Classmates if she needed assistance with cancelling her renewal. The subject line of the renewal reminder was Your Classmates.com Membership Anniversary Updated Pricing.

According to our records, ************ did not opt out of the automatic renewal program or contact Classmates prior to her renewal date and, as a result, her membership was renewed for an additional 2-year term and her payment method was charged $96.00 on April 1, 2024 in accordance with the disclosures and the Terms of Service that she agreed to during her 2022 purchase.

Per the Terms of Service, Classmates has a no refund policy. However, as a matter of customer courtesy, I have provided a one-time only refund to ************ in the amount of $96.00 on April 4, 2024. ************ should note this refund in her PayPal account within the next 3 5 business days depending on PayPals internal refund policies. ************** Classmates membership has reverted to a free membership and she will not be charged any future membership subscription fees unless she proactively purchases a paid membership in the future.

Should your office or ************ have any questions or need additional information, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

      Complaint number: 21496641
      Consumer name: ***********************************

We are in receipt of the Better Business Bureau Complaint filed by **************************** in connection with his paid Classmates+ membership subscription.

According to our records, **************************** registered and created a free Classmates membership on March 17, 2011. On August 9, 2011, *************************** upgraded his free membership and purchased an automatically renewing 1-year paid membership subscription. A copy of his membership record is attached for your review.

Classmates provided clear disclosures within the paid membership purchase process at the time **************************** upgraded his membership that his paid membership subscription would automatically renew and that no portion of any subscription fee was refundable. Additionally, Classmates has sent *************************** an automatic renewal reminder every year since 2017.

Classmates sent Mr. ************* most recent automatic renewal reminder on June 30, 2023. This email notified **************************** that his 1-year membership would renew on August 9, 2023, in the amount of $60 unless he cancelled prior to his renewal date and instructions on how to cancel. The subject line of his renewal reminder was Notification Your Account Will be Renewed Soon. A representative copy of the 2023 renewal reminder and the email send history from Classmates email systems to **************************** in connection with this renewal reminder is attached for your review.

According to our records, **************************** did not opt out of the automatic renewal program or contact Classmates prior to his most recent renewal date and, as a result, his membership was renewed for additional term and his payment method was charged $60.00 on August 9, 2023.

On or about October 11, 2023, **************************** filed a chargeback dispute with his financial institution. As part of the chargeback proceedings, his 2023 subscription fee of $60 was refunded to his credit card account until ********** ruled on the validity of the charges. Once the subscription fees were refunded, Mr. ************* Classmates paid membership reverted to a free membership.

Per the No Refund Policy section located under the ***** Services" portion of the Classmates Terms of Service, which *************************** agreed to when he registered on the website, when he purchased his paid membership subscription and through his continuance use of the site, states:

All fees relating to **** Services, including the initial fees and any subsequent automatic renewal fees (as described above), are non-refundable. If you initiate a chargeback or otherwise reverse a payment made with your Payment Method, we may in our discretion cancel your **** Services immediately. If we successfully dispute the reversal, and the reversed funds are returned to us, you are not *********** a refund or to have your **** Services reinstated.

Mastercard subsequently ruled the subscription fees were valid charges and Mr. ************* 2023 membership subscription fees in the amount of $60 were re-charged to his financial account and returned to Classmates.

If **************************** would like, I can reinstate his paid membership privileges and place his reinstated paid membership in manual renewal (i.e. the paid membership will expire at the end of its term and will not automatically renew) or he can delete his membership entirely from the Classmates website. If he would prefer to delete his account, he can follow the instructions to remove his account at the following link: ******************************************************************-How-do-I-cancel-my-membership.

This information should successfully resolve Mr. ************* consumer complaint. If the BBB or **************************** should have any questions or need additional information, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

We are in receipt of the consumer complaint filed by **************** in connection with her Classmates+ paid membership subscription.

Classmates provides clear disclosures within the paid membership process that fee-based memberships will automatically renew. Below, I have outlined the process and the various places in which Classmates notified **************** of the Automatic Renewal Program.

**************** purchased an introductory 50% discounted 3-month automatically renewing paid membership on December 24, 2023 in the amount of $10.80 US. On the payment information page of the paid membership purchase process, prior to completing her purchase, **************** was specifically notified that her membership fees were non-refundable, that her membership would automatically renew for the same term each time it reached its expiration date unless she chose to cancel, that her payment method would be charged the standard full term price of $21.60 US for each renewal period, and that she could visit the Account portion of the website to change her renewal status at any time. **************** was presented with language on this same page stating that, by clicking the button to purchase, she agreed to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy (with hyperlinks to each). A representative copy of the standard 50% discounted purchase page is attached for your review.

The No Refund Policy section located under the ***** Services" portion of the Terms of Service states:

All fees relating to **** Services, including the initial fees and any subsequent automatic renewal fees (as described above), are non-refundable. If you initiate a chargeback or otherwise reverse a payment made with your Payment Method, we may in our discretion cancel your **** Services immediately. If we successfully dispute the reversal, and the reversed funds are returned to us,you are not *********** a refund or to have your **** Services reinstated.

Shortly thereafter, **************** would have received a paid subscription confirmation email sent to the email address associated with her account, which is the same email address associated with her consumer complaint. This email contained Ms. ******* membership registration number, the amount **************** paid for her paid membership, her renewal date, and a reminder that her paid subscription would renew unless she chose to cancel by visiting the Accountportion of the website prior to her renewal date and that no portion of any subscription fee was refundable. A representative copy of the receipt emailer is attached for your review.

According to our records, **************** did not opt out of the automatic renewal program or contact the Classmates ********************** prior to her renewal date. As a result, her membership was renewed for an additional term and her payment method was charged $21.60 US on March 24, 2024, in accordance with the disclosures and the Terms of Service that she agreed to during her initial purchase.

Per the Classmates Terms of Service, Classmates has a no refund policy. However, as matter of customer courtesy, I have provided **************** with a one-time only refund in the amount of $21.60 US on March 27, 2024. **************** will note this refund on her physical billing statement within the next ***** days (or sooner if she banks online), depending on her financial institutions billing cycle and internal refund policies. In the meantime, Ms. ******* paid membership has reverted to a free Classmates account.

This information should successfully resolve Ms. ******* consumer complaint. If your office or **************** have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

      Complainant:Tired Consumer

We are in receipt of the consumer complaint filed by Tired Consumer (Consumer).

I am unable to locate a Classmates membership with the limited information the Consumer provided in their complaint. If the Consumer can provide me with the below information, I will research the matter further:

-The email address used to complete the Consumers registration on the Classmates.com website; or
-The registration number of the Consumers Classmates membership.

The Consumer can either provide this information through the BBBs dispute resolution portal or they can email me directly at [email protected].

Additionally, the Communications From Us section of the Classmates Privacy Policy, which the Consumer agreed to when they completed their registration on the Classmates website, describes the types of emails Classmates members will receive and how they can change their email preferences on the website. Specifically,it states:

As a user of the Services, you will receive our customary business communications (e.g., emails, push notifications or other communications facilitating, completing or confirming your registration, upgrade or other transaction, providing you notice of new or updated products or features, alerting you to member-to-member communications or other member activity relating to your membership, or other administrative messages). We *** also send certain "welcome" messages that are informational and provide useful details about your account or product usage instructions when you sign up for an account or begin using a particular service. In addition, upon registration you *** be automatically enrolled in one or more of our regularly recurring email subscription programs. You *** also choose to participate in other email subscription programs that we *** make available to you. We also *** send you communications regarding special offers or other promotional material for our products or Services or those of our affiliated companies or advertisers. We *** send all of these communications to the primary email address that you provide to us, any secondary email address that you *** have provided to us if we have determined that your primary email address appears to no longer be valid or otherwise functioning properly, or any email address that we receive as described in Section 1(b) or 1(l). We *** also send these communications to your inbox on the Services, if applicable.

While we reserve the right to send you our customary business communications, "welcome" messages and other transactional emails without offering you the opportunity to opt out of receiving them, we do provide you with the opportunity to select whether or not you wish to continue to receive our subscription-based or commercial emails. Each subscription-based email communication from us contains instructions on how you can remove yourself from the mailing list for that specific email subscription program, and each commercial email contains instructions on how you can opt out of receiving further commercial emails from us.

You can also update your email preferences by logging onto the account or similar section of the applicable Service.
Please keep in mind that any changes that you make to your email preferences *** take up to ten (10) business days to process and that each subscription-based email and all commercial emails have their own separate opt-out processes. If you have questions about changing your email preferences, please contact the Customer Support team of the applicable Service.

10 March 2024, *****, membership renewal automatically. My dispute is I went to delete the account information a few months ago. Along with that my profile, and credit card information I went to delete as well. I called today to find out instead of the account I had their website made two accounts and theyre blaming me as the user for creating a free account and a billed account. When I went to log into the account to update the password, instead it created a duplicate account. I went to cancel the account in doing this instead it created a duplicate account. I called customer service to have the fees reversed from the last payment on the 10th of March from my **************** card being billed automatically. They doubled down and said its non refundable even with knowing I went to delete my account they still refused to reverse the funds and wont remove the fee or the account until June of 2024. This is a headache to get through with customer service they speak over you and wont give the instructions to remove the account in the main page of the website. They make it impossible to remove the automatic billing and created a duplicate account instead of updating the one I already had.

      Consumer name: *******************

We are in receipt of the Better Business Bureau Complaint filed by ************** regarding her paid Classmates+ membership subscription.

According to our records, ************** has two accounts on the Classmates website:

Registration Number **********: This membership was created on January 15, 2008, using the same email address as listed in her complaint. ************** last accessed this membership account on March 21, 2024. This membership has never had a paid membership subscription associated with it and I deleted this duplicate account on March 27, 2024.

Registration Number **********:  This membership was created on June 21, ********************************************** **************** complaint. ************** purchased a 3-month automatically renewing paid membership subscription on this account on September 10, 2023. This membership subscription automatically renewed for two additional terms and is the subject of this complaint.

A copy of both membership records are attached for your review.

Classmates provides clear disclosures within the paid membership process that fee-based memberships will automatically renew. Below, I have outlined the process and the various places in which Classmates notified ************** of the Automatic Renewal Program.

As noted above, ************** purchased an introductory 58% discounted 3-month automatically renewing paid membership subscription on September 10,2023 in the amount of $9.00. On the payment information page of the paid membership purchase process, prior to completing her purchase, ************** was specifically notified that her membership fees were non-refundable, that her membership would automatically renew for the same term each time it reached its expiration date unless she chose to cancel, that her payment method would be charged the full term subscription price of US $21.60 for each renewal period, and that she could visit the Account portion of the website to change her renewal preference at any time. ************** was presented with language on this same page stating that, by clicking the button to purchase, she agreed to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy (with hyperlinks to each). A representative copy of the standard 58% discounted purchase page is attached for your review.

Shortly thereafter, ************** would have received a paid subscription confirmation email sent to the email addresses associated with her account. This receipt email contained ****************** membership registration number, the amount ************** paid for her membership subscription, her renewal date, and a reminder that her paid subscription would renew unless she chose to cancel by visiting the Account portion of the website prior to her renewal date and that no portion of any subscription fee was refundable.

According to our records, ************** did not opt out of the automatic renewal program or contact the Classmates ********************** prior to her renewal date(s). As a result, her membership was renewed for additional terms and her payment method was charged $21.60 on December 10, 2023 and on March 10, 2024 in accordance with the disclosures and the Terms of Service that she agreed to during her September 2023 purchase.

Per the Classmates Terms of Service, Classmates has a no refund policy. However, as a matter of customer courtesy, I have provided ************** with a one-time only refund of her last membership fee in the amount of $21.60 on March 27, 2024. ************** should note this refund on her physical billing statement within the next ***** days (or sooner if she banks online), depending on her financial institutions billing cycle and internal refund policies. In the meantime, this membership has reverted to a free Classmates membership. As noted above, her duplicate account under registration number ********** was deleted on March 27, 2024.

This information should successfully resolve ****************** complaint. Should your office or ************** have any questions or need additional information, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

      Complaint: 21466125

I am rejecting this response because: they have made their website very intricate to intentionally redirect you to make a new account instead of verifying you have an account. it automatically forces you to create multiple accounts even with the same email. The website is not clear and concise to be direct to get into and cancel the paid or unpaid account. their rebuttal is a slander at the customer to not know how to use their services not in their accountability to force membership to be paid automatically. when you try to cancel it the website does not have a link directly to the paid membership account. if that did work i wouldn't have called to their customer service to cancel it. when you cancel it cancels only your unpaid membership account which is free, and only the cancel link is available to the free unpaid membership account. their lack of responsibility to be accountable for their forced membership is unacceptable but they're trying their best to skirt around the direct problem of hiding the option to make it impossible to do. both accounts should be linked, both accounts should be accessible, both accounts should be able to be removed without having to go to their feral customer service who attacks you for their horrible i.t. set up that tried to make money off of this automatic renewal status. when you call them to catch them on this they're only upset and become verbally abusive and that's not business that's harassment, forced membership is illegal and not allowed to be done on a credit card or bank account. if this business really had any footing they wouldn't be so upset but they know they're at fault and trying to force the paid and unpaid membership to continue when i canceled it, called their customer service to cancel it, and canceled the paid membership too. i removed my account information automatically deleting the credit card information which somehow they know i had two account but somehow only have the credit card information available on the free account. their i.t. has purposely intertwined the account settings to force the membership. yet somehow has kept them as two entities so that they can make an excuse to force the paid account to continue in a portal that's not accessible. both website links are not available and they need to have a class action lawsuit filed to follow up to their 2021 lawsuit (*********************************************************************************************) because this account b.s. is b.s. to have to **** down any form of a legal way to finally get into the account required action beyond their company customer service.

On 2/28/2024, **** of America alerted us to possible fraud on our credit card. It was another attempt to charge our credit card for membership. Two years ago, they charged our card $96.00 and I thought, I must have missed the renewal email. Now I know, they never send them or send them well-disguised. I called again today to make sure the account is, indeed, cancelled and the money refunded. I was told there are "no refunds" and I had been sent an email notice. How can I prove that I did not receive a notice (twice)? I want to be refunded my money.

The email also included a phone number to call Classmates as well as a link to email the Classmates ********************** if she needed assistance in canceling her paid membership. The subject line of this renewal reminder was Your Classmates.com Membership Anniversary New Term. A representative copy of this email reminder as well as the email send history from Classmates email systems to ****************** is attached for your review.

According to our records, ****************** did not opt out of the automatic renewal program, and, as a result, her membership was renewed for an additional term and her payment method was charged $60.00 in accordance with the disclosures and the Terms of Service that she agreed to during her 2023 purchase.

Per the Terms of Service, Classmates has a no refund policy. I can confirm ****************** has been removed from the automatic renewal program and her paid membership subscription has been placed in manual renewal. Her paid membership subscription will therefore lapse on March 2, 2025, and will then revert to a free Classmates membership. No additional membership subscription fees will be charged to her payment method unless she proactively extends her current paid membership subscription or purchases a paid membership subscription in the future.

This information should successfully resolve Ms. ******** complaint. Should your office or ****************** have any questions or need additional information, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

      Sincerely,

      ***********************

      Customer response

      03/27/2024

I understand that you are calling this matter closed.

I will tell you that Classmates is a scam. Most notifications that are sent from this company have no message from classmates. Most emails that they send are not even people that were part of our high school, nor any messages left.

Also, they leave no way on their website to completely close an account once it is opened.  I will except your decision as the BBB on this matter, but they are scamming people.

I will never use this service nor recommend them. There are many posts of how dishonest this company is. No company should be able to auto cc an account without verbal authorization. And if they do and the person calls back immediately upon posting ethically should reverse the charge, I have never come across a more dishonest company in my lifetime. This is very disheartening.
