I reserved a suite at the Fairbanks Inn and called the day before arrival to be certain thet my booking agent at Hotels.com had informed the hotel I travel with a service dog. I was told there would be a fee for the dog. I explained that the ADA policy is that there must be no fee for service animals-thy are not pets. When I arrived I was told I must pay a 20.00 fee-later increased to 25.00 per night because my dog did not have proper credentials or a vest. I am including the ADA official rules on service animals. No papers or documents are issued by, required or approved according to ADA ruling. I offered to pull the document up on my phone but was told they knew I was wrong. I finally agreed to pay the fee but was told they did not like my attitude and I should leave. I would like the BBB to know of this hotels practice of discriminating against people with disabilities and to please retrain the clerks involved. I have only first names-Chris, female, and Peter, male, who were on duty at the front desk at 3PM on 1022/2021. I had no other hotel booked and Hotels.com said I needed to cancel my reservation the day before I was refused entry (OK, that really makes no sense) to get a refund. They say they will contact the hotel to see if they can get them to refund my 2 nights stay. From the 2011 ADA Requirements Banner Service Animals The Department of Justice published revised final regulations implementing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) When it is not obvious what service an animal provides, only limited inquiries are allowed. Staff may ask two questions: (1) is the dog a service animal required because of a disability, and (2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform. Staff cannot ask about the person’s disability, require medical documentation, require a special identification card or training documentation for the dog, or ask that the dog demonstrate its ability to perform the work or task.
