Metro Guard placed a rodent bait box in our attic; we did not have any rodent issues at the time. Eventually now a rodent came and ate the poison and died somewhere in the attic inside our insulation; the location can be estimated based on the location of the odor. It is now decaying and there is a very offensive smell in our house coming from that area of the attic and the bedroom underneath. I have spoken with other pest control companies, and they said it is common knowledge and standard practice in this profession to not place this type of bait box in the attic and when done, rodents dying in/under the insulation is a complication that can occur. Metro Guard did not let us know this could happen, and they did not act according to standard practice. Metro Guard is now unable to find and remove the rodent. They only offered to place a product to absorb the smell, however we are concerned about the health effects of dead/decomposing rodents in the attic insulation, as the air/smell is being blown to the rest of the house. Some risks include bacteria left behind even after decomposition is done which can spread, viral and volatile organic compounds being blown into the house causing infection/allergic reactions. Metro Guard should remove the dead rodents that are there, clean any decomposition materials / maggots, remove soiled insulation, and spray/fog/sanitize the area. If they cannot do this, they should hire someone who will or reimburse the cost if I am finding someone to do it.
