On 12-21-22 I had a meeting with a sales representative (Salvatore Gentile)from Design 1 Solar. After listening to the information he provided and what I was able to research a contract was signed. Then the issues started. No contact or lack of coordination within Design 1 by employees.
Waited months for Design 1 to pull permits. Then waited for installation.
Finally a crew arrived in July and installed my Solar system. No complaints with crew or install.
Then back to waiting again. And the lack of coordination between Design 1 and my electric company PPL. The blame game lasted two months. I placed phone calls every day to Design 1. Rarely did I get a phone call back.
Emails were sent daily. I always received a response, but it was to pacify me.
Then we went “on line” and the hits just kept coming. The 85% savings ?? Don’t believe it. Have never reached even close to that. I’m now paying for the solar system and my electric bill. Not a great deal and definitely not worth it for $77,000.
The sales pitch included a check to be sent once system was running. Never saw that one. And another check for the 4 months I was paying for a system that wasn’t running and my PPL bill. Never saw that one either. I’m always told “they go out in middle of the month. I’d like to know which month. Nothing yet.
I’m disappointed with the customer service end of the company. Although everyone is polite it’s constantly a run around. I would like the issues of the two checks resolved.
I would also like to resolve the production or lack of it, with my system. I sent in all my past electric bills that they required. Have not heard back.
My next course of action is contacting the Pennsylvania AG office to file a complaint.

I do see where you sent your power bills in to Rob. He has not reviewed them as of yet. I also see that the solar is covering over half of your usage. The main problem I see if that you refused to allow us to install the complimentary attic package which is where some of the savings come from. You will not achieve it without that.

    Business Response

    Date: 01/30/2023

Your rebate checks are scheduled to go out this week. However your predicted savings was based on doing your attic work. Once your bills that you recently sent are inputted and analyzed we will see where you are with savings. Remember though savings come at an average and this is the worst time of year for production plus usage typically goes up on top of that. Again your checks are scheduled to be issued this week.

    Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ~ and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me.

I am hoping Design 1 keeps their word and I receive the checks.  More importantly is the solar system it self.  Better communication would go a long way.

    Sincerely,

    Charles ******

I contacted Bright ridge today and they have no record they are supposed to inspect my system. They were never contacted. Once again all I get from D1G is the runaround. Can you please get them to turn on my solar panels. It's been 3 months since the system was installed and it's still not up and running.

    Business Response

That is because they are waiting on a copy of the passed inspection that we are struggling to get from the county. We are working on this. I assure you we want the system on as much as you do.

I contacted Design 1 Group to install 20 solar panels on my home to offset energy costs. The installation was completed in a timely manner although the installation crew had one member that had to have several counselings from the crew leader for language and throwing things from my roof, this crew member also complained that he was going to miss his court date due to being on jobs. When we put the arrays on line there were ten panels not producing or communicating. Then the crew for the energy conservation arrived and stated that the attic was too large to complete an energy conservation project and left, they told us D1G would contact us. D1G contacted me on November 4, 2022 and offered a rebate and the man I spoke with stated it would be mailed on November 11, 2022. It is now December 20, 2022 and I have received no check and customer service stated that finance is working on all rebates, I told them it takes little time to issue a lot of checks. Last week on December 15, 2022 technicians from D1G came out to correct the production and communication problems and they did find the one of my arrays had been wired wrong, that is what the technicians told me. They also found that the breaker used to tie into my main panel was the wrong size breaker, it was to high amp breaker and they had to go purchase the correct size breaker and install it. Today on December 20, 2022 my monitoring app alerted me that there is a problem with the meter gateway. I called today to speak with costumer service and finance and of course there is no answer and my experience with this company and many messages left are never returned. Had I done my homework and searched reviews I would have used another company.

I recommend not doing business with this company. The only reason they got one star from me was because I had to pick a star. This company promised that my average electric bill would not be over $100, not even close! They signed me up for a program where I would not have to start making payments until 18 months after the install that is also a lie the day you sign the paperwork you have 18 months whether it takes them 18 months or two years to install the panels. You're gonna start paying for them after 18 months. do yourself a favor. Go with another company do not do business with designed one solar group. My sales person has left the company because of her training. She stated that she was told to tell customers one thing, but was not able to provide the service that was promised. She gave me one of the owners names which is ***** **** his number is (XXX) XXX-XXXX. I spoke with ***** and he told me that he would have his customer service Director *** ****** (XXX) XXX-XXXX work with me to resolve this. Well, I've spoken with *** now for over six months and he has accomplished absolutely nothing. So I say again do not do business with this company.

BBB, I hope you are not publicly posting phone numbers. In response to this complaint. It has been discussed with the customer the saving they have received. Everything has been entered into a spreadsheet and they are in fact saving incredibly close to what was predicted. I will make sure the customer care manager has shared this with the customer so we are all on the same page. once everyone is on the same page it will be determined if next steps are necessary.

Installed OCT '20. Purchased D1G Solar System (SS) as primary power source w/no back-up battery (told not needed, panels would charge during day providing power into early evening), insulation in attic, heat reflecting material in attic, 50Gal hybrid solar/electrical Sun Bandit hot water heater (SBWH), & new thermostat. Install of insulation, contractors damaged living room ceiling. Contacted D1G immediately, was agreed I'd find someone to fix & D1G would reimburse cost. Sent invoice OCT '21 via email to CSR I was talking to. STILL haven't rcv'd reimbursement (12/15/22). Learned in last cpl months: SS is back-up to grid, won't provide power if no grid, requires power from grid to run, & SBWH still not working properly. Paid $40,000 for SS. Sold on SS providing approximately 75% of power for home, have power when no grid, grid as supplemental & at night, have "more" hot water & if no grid. To date average power provided by SS is 20% & not getting hot water sold.
DEC '20: phone/email conversations w/salesman & CSRs about SS/SBWH not working as sold. D1G sent someone to look @ SBWH. They did something, said should work now. Email 1/27/21: SS/SBWH STILL not working as sold. Tried reaching customer srvc multiple times over past 2yrs. Told they are researching/reviewing/analyzing data & would get back to me. No one got back to me. Rcv'd text msg/call to set time to have technician come out b/c D1G detected something wrong w/SS, set appt., no showed, rcv'd text asking how appt. went, replied "no one showed", no response. Spoke to manager 9/2/22 after not hearing back from 8/25/22 conversation w/CSR. Provided details to manager. NOV '22 technician out to look at SS. Told inverter for SBWH not working. Solution: rewire SBWH to grid & redirect panels to house. Replace inverter? cannot & their solution will work. Want me to sign paperwork prior to scheduling work that states above & it will resolve all issues. Believe they screwed install of SBWH voiding warrantee.

We signed a contract for solar panel and conservation package installation in July of 2022 Our solar panels were installed on September 6th 2022 and as of today they are still not turned on. We had the conservation package for the attic canceled and still have not received the refund check for that. We were told that our energy company has not approved them for operation yet. We were told once that we were waiting for permits from our county as well as from the energy company. I was told once that they were waiting on a special meter that's on back order. I was told once that I did not need the special meter because my utility meter is already a Bi-directional meter. It seems like every time I call and inquire about the status of the installation I always get a different excuse. We have been paying Mosaic for the solar loan since September and still pay every month when they are not even operational. Every time you try to call them it just rings or when you do talk to someone they can't give you any answers. If Design 1 is that under staffed or behind then they should not be taking on new customers until the ones who have already paid have been taken care of. I want my refund check sent out for my conservation package. I want my reimbursement checks for my Mosaic payments sent out and I want my system operational before my next mosaic payment is due on January 11th. It's a shame that in 2022 you have to resort to the BBB to get a company that I paid 75,000 Dollars to finish a job. If it is not operational by the time my next mosaic payment is due I expect more money knocked off from the original cost. This is really bad business Design 1 Group.

The system cannot be used until Design 1 Group has an inspection completed. The contract that was made between Design 1 Group,American Electric power and myself states the the system cannot be used until it has been inspected and approved. Which I have been waiting on for some time now. I'm also still waiting for my refund of 3000$ for not completing the conservation package and also the refund for my first 2 months payments. Both of which I have signed a change of agreement order. Seems like this is pretty normal with this company.

    Business Response /* (4000, 15, 2023/01/03) */
I do see a check is to go to you in the amount of $3000 in place of the conservation package. this will go out once the utility completes their part in order to close this out. Rebates and credits are the absolute last thing. That is the process. Please call in to 1-844-765-2755 once AEP has swapped your meter in order to expedite.

    Consumer Response /* (4200, 17, 2023/01/10) */
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
The 3000 dollar rebate is a settlement because you guys quoted work you could not complete in a reasonable time. I have fully paid your company for a system that still is inoperable. You guys did not hesitate to take my money before it was operational. But now that it's owed to me I have to wait until the system is operational.?I've made payments every month. The least you could do is send my rebate check so I'm not paying out of my own pocket for my power bill and an inoperable solar panel system while I wait for the power company to install my meter.

On December 31, 2021, we contracted with Design 1 Group in the amount of approximately $75,000 to work in our attic, purchase solar panels and get a new roof. It has been nearly a year and the only thing that has been completed is a new roof. The roof was sub-contracted through a local company and was completed in September. While I have tried contacting the company many times, they have no desire or plans to return my calls. While we have not had to start paying yet, we are concerned that this will not be completed by the time we begin the payments.

I was told in September that I would receive weekly emails telling me the status of my project. So far, I received one, and the individual I have contacted many times will not respond. My salesman no longer works for the company, so contacting him is useless. From what I understand, they are no longer doing business in my state. I am at the point, where I want it completed or I want out. This process has been more than frustrating! The companies greatest quality seems to be their ability to ignore all communication.

I look forward to a quick and simple resolution.

Our initial contract was signed on 9/22/21 to have solar panels and a hot water heater. The hot water heater was installed fairly promptly (though not without its own issues with the installers).

The solar panels were installed in 2022 (March I believe), which, we could accept with winter and all probably not being a great time to be on a roof. Then there was some issue about needing to cut into our ceiling to inspect the roof AFTER the panels were installed, which raised some red flags. Eventually, we also worked through this and ***** from D1G agreed to cover the cost of having the hole cut in the ceiling and (for convenience) having a ladder installed to make it worth the headache.

That hole was cut by a contractor in October, and pictures were taken for confirmation by ***** from D1G. We are now still waiting on the last steps to actually see the benefits of the panels that have been sitting on our home for months, and after multiple attempts to email and call various contacts from the company, no one has reached out to us even to give us an update (also, no one is answering the phone number listed on their website). Additionally, the contractor that did the work cutting the hole and installing the ladder is still unpaid.

In September, we were also promised compensation for 6 months of payments and our rebate check, which have yet to be delivered.

At this point, we've lost all confidence in the company to provide any sort of quality services. As much as I'd like to just have the panels turned on and working, I'm concerned that we'll have another issue and receive no assistance from the company. Meanwhile, we continue making payments on a loan after a sales pitch of how beneficial this decision would be in the long run. Personally, I'd just like the panels removed, the contract canceled, and our money returned so we can just move on.

    Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2022/12/13) */
I do not see any change order or agreement signed for the 6 months of payments. I do know we had been trying to get this done for a while and needed cooperation. I also see we have called your utility every 3 days to get this completed with them. We have no control over them and us along with you are at their mercy. I will send an email now to see if we can push them harder to complete their part. Thank you for your patience.

    Consumer Response /* (3000, 8, 2022/12/14) */
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
The fact that it took filing a complaint with the BBB just to get the information that you all are "calling our utility every 3 days" demonstrates the lack of professionalism at the root of this issue. We have been reaching out for months via phone and email to various point of contact with absolutely no response.

We have no way of monitoring the performance of these panels, if they are producing power as claimed, though now that I'm aware they are, I will review our most recent utility bills. There is a monitoring system mentioned in the contract, which has not been delivered. I assume this is supposed to happen upon confirmation that the work is completed, (the same time that, I assume, we would receive the aforementioned rebate check), which has not happened. I can't speak for any sort of change order regarding 6 months of payments - the most I have to speak to this is the email screen shot that was previously attached.

Yes, there was a delay in getting a photo of the roof joists, which was related to us trying to understand why the company would want to cut a hole in our ceiling months AFTER they had installed the solar panels on the roof already instead of verifying and conforming to proper regulations during installation. Out of the 15 months that this has taken, that may account for 1 or 2, and as mentioned previously, has been resolved. Unfortunately, based on the contract terms, this also means the stated warranty on defects in materials or workmanship has also expired, which is also concerning given the oversight which led to the "hole cutting" delay. Additionally, the cost of cutting this hole and installing a pull-down ladder would be covered by the company, and the contractor that completed the work claims he has yet to be compensated.

If all of the outstanding deliverables mentioned above are fulfilled, I will no longer think a refund is necessary as we'll have a fully functional system.

    Business Response /* (4000, 10, 2022/12/14) */
I will have someone send you a link for the monitoring. As far as service goes, we have free service for life so you are covered. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Consumer Response /* (4200, 12, 2022/12/16) */
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
A city building inspector arrived yesterday afternoon to inspect our electrical installation (I assume at D1G's prompting). Unfortunately, it sounds like the "green sticker" he was looking for wasn't present because an electrical inspection hadn't been completed yet. He seemed to think this is something the installer would have scheduled.

Also, we have not received any information about the monitoring software, but I'm assuming that may come after this inspection? (hopefully, the rebate check as well?)

Sorry, I wouldn't normally use the BBB for this level of communication, but I'm not sure who else to reach out to.

    Business Response /* (4000, 14, 2022/12/16) */
sending this to the inspection team now. Thank you!

Reached out to Design1 over the summer to have solar panels installed. Was visited by a great salesman who set us up - told us they would take care of all the permits and handle all issues. Everything seemed to be going good until late August. The panels were installed and I was told that an inspector would come by in the next couple of weeks to give it the green light so we can turn them on. Delay after delay after delay - every attempt to contact someone with additional information was met with 'soon'...this went on for 2 full months with no resolution.

On October 24 I was finally contacted via text (from *****) that the inspector and ***** *** - a representative of the company - would be at my house at 10:00 am on Wednesday, October 26. I confirmed the appointment. The 26th came and went and NOBODY showed up to my house. I continued to contact the company for a response - nothing.

On November 14 the inspector showed up while I was away from house - with no communication or representation from Design1 that he would be coming. He left a tag on my door to call him so I did and scheduled him to come back a couple days later. He came back, did his inspection and found 1 problem with the connection to the breaker panel that needed to be fixed before approving. On the same day, shortly after the inspector left, someone else from Design1 showed up (never got his name or a card) - also unannounced, and unaware that the inspector had ever been there. The Design1 rep used my phone to call the inspector where they argued back and forth about the problem. The inspector told the rep that the rep could not do the work needed to fix because he was not licensed in KY.

Now here we are. Since then, no communication from Design1 as to what the next steps are and I am at the end of my patience with this. These panels have been on my roof since August - get them up and running and keep your promises to your customers.

Install date was the 16th of November agreement was the on the 31 of August.
I've paid 94.37 the loan amount for the solar/ battery pack/ hot water heater was $31,650.
    Business name Design 1 Group
The business did not do their due diligence of the material needed for my roof. They had multiple times of installation and never installed the product. I had multiple agents assigned to my case and there was no agreement of cancellation or not being able to install from them or loan forgiveness for not being able to install the products. The Solar company is a scam and pushed me to the point of mental anguish that I had to get a acting attorney on the case for either cancellation or install me or my attorney have not heard from them or their team.

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
Design 1 group has missed a lot of communication in general if you are waiting on permits then why is the customer service agent living to me again and saying everything is so called figured out and never sent a inspection for the new product I didn't hear from you for a month and you where caught lieing again. I do not want to deal with a company that has no idea what they are doing through the customer service side or the install side. You missed your date the I gave is the best I will do going forward.

    Business Response /* (4000, 20, 2022/12/01) */
we are ready to schedule the install. No one has lied to you. Some jurisdictions take longer than others. I understand your concern with customer service but they were waiting on the answers that no one had because we were waiting on the jurisdiction
