I enrolled in Thinkful's Software Engineering Immersion Bootcamp in late 2021 via an Income Share Agreement (ISA), expecting a comprehensive education in the **** stack and job placement assistance. Ive paid approximately $24,500, trusting their commitment to equip me for a career in tech. The program failed to meet these promises. The curriculum was outdated and superficial, leaving me unprepared for real-world engineering environments. The learning could have been acquired cheaply or freely elsewhere. Others resorted to cheating using ****** solutions, and the coaches provided little support or meaningful feedback. After graduating in April 2022, I struggled with job placement, receiving generic, irrelevant advice from my career coach. The push to apply to dozens of jobs a week, regardless of relevance, left my information scattered with no ********** July 2022, I secured a job on my own, but was laid off two months later. Thinkful offered no follow-up support, as I had been a success story after securing the role. Since then, Ive been unable to secure a tech job, despite self-teaching new skills. In 2024, I found full-time employment in customer support, far from my dream career in tech. Many of my cohort members are still job hunting in tech.I am still paying $875 a month for a program that failed to deliver on its promises. This financial burden has been overwhelming, and I struggle to afford basic necessities. Thinkful has rebranded to ***** ******, seemingly to distance itself from its prior reputation.I have not contacted Thinkful directly, and this is my first attempt to resolve this. I am seeking loan forgiveness, reduction, or a refund as this program failed to fulfill its commitments despite my full efforts.Business Response

Thank you for sharing your experience with us and we deeply empathize with your situation.
Upon reviewing your account, we would like to clarify that you enrolled in the program with an Ascent Deferred Expense loan of $15,600, with $7,500 as the Living Expense (LE). It appears that your enrollment was not through an Income Share Agreement (ISA), which might be a point of confusion. Nonetheless, we understand that the financial burden youve mentioned is a significant concern.
We deeply regret that our program did not meet your expectations. Having said that, please note that our curriculum is designed with industry relevance in mind, and we regularly review and update course materials to ensure they meet the needs of the "present-day" technology landscape. We have seen positive outcomes for other students who've graduated from the same program. But again, your feedback is really valuable and we have noted it for potential improvements.
We also wanted to take a moment to acknowledge some of the positive feedback you've shared in your satisfaction survey. You mentioned of having "tons of opportunities that were graduate-friendly" during your job search was incredibly helpful. Seems like the job opportunities shared by your coach were beneficial, even if you didnt make it to the offer stage. This highlights that our team made valuable efforts to connect you with job prospects. In addition, we appreciate your feedback on how the careers team helped you "come out of your shell" and build confidence, particularly in areas like mock and informational interviews.
We also recognize that securing a job after completing the program can be challenging. While our team worked hard to support you the best they could, sometimes the job market can be tricky and unpredictable, and sometimes it can take longer to land the right opportunity. However, since you secured in-field employment during the job search period, that revoked your Tuition Refund Guarantee/Policy eligibility.
Regarding your current financial situation, please note that we would not be able to provide a refund, reduction or forbearance on your loan. You may reach out to ****** directly to discuss options for loan forbearance.
If you need further assistance or have any questions, please dont hesitate to contact us.Customer Answer

I enrolled in Thinkfuls Engineering Flex Bootcamp based on promises of a full-stack curriculum, job support, and a tuition reimbursement guarantee the main reason I signed up. However, the program was discontinued after I began: it was split into separate frontend and backend tracks, yet I was still expected to complete both within the original 6-month timeframe. When I applied for an extension, I was told this disqualified me from the tuition reimbursement a critical point that was never made clear. The curriculum was outdated and poorly maintained. Assignments included expired data, broken dependencies, and obsolete instructions. Key tools like Git Bash and Postman were mentioned but never explained. All recorded lessons were on MacOS, but I used a PC causing issues the course never addressed. Only after I finished did I learn Git Bash was required. The platform frequently changed, causing technical issues. After months of frustration, I was told it only functioned properly on Chrome never communicated upfront. Support was unreliable, requiring constant reconnections just to get *********** support was minimal mostly videos and a confusing Chrome extension to track job applications. There was no real guidance or preparation for current industry standards. I'm now relearning everything via free courses and ******* just to become job-ready.This experience left me with debt, outdated skills, and no clear path to employment. Im requesting a full refund or loan cancellation due to misrepresentation, poor quality, and the programs failure to deliver as advertised.Business Response

Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. We take feedback from our students seriously, and we are committed to ensuring that all of our students have a positive experience with our program. We appreciate the opportunity to address the issues you've raised.
*** Ineligibility
We understand your concerns regarding the *** eligibility. As outlined in the Enrollment Agreement (EA) and the Course Catalog, the eligibility requirements to graduate within the scheduled time frame are clearly defined. Specifically,to qualify for the ***, students must pass assessments within two attempts.Upon reviewing your records, we found that a few of your assessments mentioned as follows were passed after more than two attempts, which unfortunately makes you ineligible for the ***:
1. Submit your final capstone for grading
2. Backend: Mock interview instructions
3.Frontend: Mock interview instructions
4.GrubDash project: Submit your work
5. Personal branding: ******** project
6. Portfolio project: Submit your work
However, to best support your success, we approved and granted an extension beyond the MET (Maximum Expected Time) until January 31, 2025. Please note that the extension also made it clear that you would not be eligible for *** under these circumstances. Considering that your last assessment was under review on the last day of the MET, we allowed you to maintain enrollment until February 19, 2025, to accommodate any possible revision requests.

Better Business Bureau:
I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# ********, and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:[Your Answer Here]
Thank you for your response. I appreciate the opportunity to clarify and provide additional context regarding the issues I experienced.
First, I acknowledge that I exceeded the originally allotted time for the program. However, it's important to recognize that following the programs restructure, the Frontend and Backend Engineering tracks were each given an estimated timeline of 45 months individually. This makes it logically inconsistent to expect a student to complete both within a six-month period particularly when the curriculum was not condensed, but split. Either content was removed (which I was not told), or the timeline was unrealistic from the outset. This restructuring materially changed the program I enrolled in, and placed an undue burden on students expected to complete both tracks simultaneously in less time than either track individually requires.
Regarding support tickets, I ask that you review the timestamps of when they began. The chat function did not function properly for weeks, and I was often unable to submit requests. Once tickets were submitted, I frequently rated them positively not because the issues were resolved, but out of consideration for the few individuals who genuinely tried to help. In most cases, I was transferred multiple times. When I saw the name ********* appear, I followed my mentors advice and closed the chat, knowing Id receive minimal assistance. Additionally, your records should reflect support agents responding with variations of nvm acknowledging that many repositories were outdated, and software needed to be rolled back. These werent isolated incidents but known, unresolved issues.
Your statement regarding Chrome support is also misleading. The Orientation Module does not specify Chrome as a requirement; it merely states a browser like Chrome that supports modern standards. My browsers met those standards. A vague recommendation does not equate to a technical requirement. A clear statement like ****** Chrome must be used would have prevented significant compatibility issues.
Many problems I faced were ultimately solved by using ChatGPT or seeking help from local engineers, rather than your support team. At one point, my mentor was unexpectedly removed from the system due to a contract lapse, and I was left without access to him. That further disrupted my progress and limited the support I could access.
In terms of assessments, I experienced major inconsistencies in ******* quality. In particular, during sessions with Shoudry, feedback was minimal and lacked explanation, reinforcing the impression that he had limited coding knowledge. It wasnt until I had different proctors that the actual gaps in instruction were explained to me. One knowledgeable ******* spent over two hours after the assessment walking me through the curriculums shortcomings and explaining, for the first time, how and why tools like Git Bash were actually used. Up to that point, Git Bash had only been mentioned in passing, never demonstrated or integrated into the instructional flow.
Even in my final restaurant assessment, support told me not to worry about the frontend if the backend works thats what they actually check. This was incredibly misleading. Only later did I learn they were referring to the test suite not the full frontend requirements. The repository I was assigned to, like many others, had not received meaningful updates in years. Some included placeholder dates like 01/01/2025 which actively broke functionality and created unnecessary delays as I had to rewrite core portions of assignments just to proceed.
Lastly, regarding career services while I understand I am technically still within the support window two coaching sessions and three emails over three months is inadequate by any standard. During the first session, the coach informed me of her limited availability and mentioned she might only be able to meet during her lunch breaks. This was demoralizing. When I voiced concerns that the tools I had learned were outdated and I was self-teaching new skills, I was advised not to learn anything new and instead focus solely on applying to jobs. In the second session, the coach appeared unaware that I was the same student from before and referenced a recent grad who had taken her advice in fact, she was talking about me. That lack of continuity and engagement further illustrates the hollow nature of the job support services provided.
In summary, while I recognize the effort to respond, the points raised in your message do not adequately address the systemic issues with Thinkful/Chegg Skills. The curriculum, structure, tools, and support services fell far short of what was advertised. I continue to believe that a full refund or loan cancellation is warranted due to misrepresentation and the substantial harm caused by these deficiencies. In order for the BBB to appropriately process your response, you MUST answer the question above.
Sincerely,
****** ********

This month I finally paid off $****** dollars for a five month UX program. The program was advertised similar to other bootcamps in the space and lacked transparency. It should have said, "****** dollars for a five month program" rather than advertise and market itself as a flexible way to get an education. The education itself was sub par and if they had, in the beginning, said "this is a ****** dollar 5 month education," then perhaps many would go through other programs that cost ******. The program is predatory- finding people who desire a career change and often times in difficult financial seasons to hop right in and change their lives. The deceptive advertising had me and my family tied to a loan that was continually sold off to new companies. Each time, the customer service was awful and they obviously didn't care about what the loan was for or that the due dates would change with each new company. I was charged multiple times for "late fees" because I had to adjust my family's finances in order to appease these awful loan sharks. Deceptive marketing pulled me into a program. Many can't believe that I had spent ****** dollars for five months and neither can I. Thinkful should advertise itself on the front page the full costs, the consequences, and then once a student commits- then they should carry that ****** dollar five month value to the highest possible educational standards. It was not that in the slightest.Business Response

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns with us through the Better Business Bureau. We understand the frustration you have expressed regarding your experience with the ** program, and we truly apologize for any confusion or dissatisfaction you may have encountered. We take all feedback seriously, and I would like to address your concerns in detail to clarify the circumstances surrounding your enrollment.
When enrolling, students are provided with the complete program cost of $36,000 for the five-month duration, as well as the opportunity to review the full details of the tuition and any associated costs. This is clearly outlined in both the Enrollment Agreement and the Course Catalog, which each student agrees to before entering the program.
Enrollment Terms and Flexibility:
In accordance with our policies:
1. Students are given the opportunity to withdraw during the trial period to be eligible for a full refund or before completing 60% of the program to receive a prorated refund. Students use this advantage if they feel the program is not a good fit for their needs.
2. The Tuition Refund Guarantee is not available to all students and is subject to eligibility criteria including location, job type, and income thresholds. This is again mentioned in detail in the Enrolment Agreement and the Course Catalog.
3. The documents also state what qualifies as a job placement, the minimum income threshold for ISA repayment, and the list of qualifying cities.
Financing:
We acknowledge your concerns about the financing process and understand that changes in servicing can sometimes be frustrating. The agreement you signed upon enrollment clearly states that 15% of your gross income (not net income) would be owed once you meet the income and employment criteria outlined in the agreement. In addition, the total repayment amount also includes the cost-of-living stipend which you received during your time in the program. The terms of this stipend and repayment schedule were explained in detail during the enrollment and onboarding process. For any servicing-related issues or requests for refunds on late fees, you may reach out directly to the servicer, who will be able to assist you with your concerns.
Program Quality:
We are sorry to hear that you felt the educational quality did not meet your expectations. The program content is designed to provide a comprehensive, industry-relevant education, but we understand that not all experiences are the same. We continuously evaluate and refine our curriculum to ensure it aligns with current industry standards and provides our students with the skills they need to succeed in their careers.
Thank you again for your feedback. We appreciate your patience as we work to improve our program and ensure that future students have a positive experience.Customer Answer

Better Business Bureau:
I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# ********, and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:Thank you for reiterating your policies and agreement but it shows that you did not read the complaint. Thinkful is rated an F under BBB and has countless 1 star ratings across a ****** search, and yet, many of the high ratings are put towards the front. If one reads through all the complaints both on BBB and other sites, there is a clear pattern where students and former students feel as though they were "duped" into the program or else there was false advertising due to deceptive marketing. ***'s are now being scrutinized for their predatory practices of luring people desperate for a career shift. When typing in "most expensive bootcamps in tech," the most expensive listed are at *****k and are attached to more notable branded names. Thinkful acts like a health insurance provider. Someone is looking for a cure and may be in dire need for a solution and Thinkful preys upon those people as a "win win" scenario. Many in my cohort did not know the implications of their choice. They are in way worse positions than I am.
Instead, Thinkful should not advertise themselves as an affordable alternative to a classic education. If the average cost of a college is roughly 5k-15k a year, then why would a 5 month bootcamp be 36k without a physical location or educational weight? I understand the business model of risk, but the point is the predatory nature of marketing. By marketing as an affordable bootcamp, it does not properly advertise the side effects or comparable offerings to others. Thinkful does NOT clearly state ****** dollars is your price to a 5 month mediocre education. I was also not able to access much of my loan as they kept switching the loan provider. **************, the original loan provider does not even exist, I believe due to legal issues. If you're going to charge ****** dollars for a remote education, then shouldn't we have access to loan information? Shouldn't the loan provider not immediately go under and wiped off the internet? Shouldn't we know what's going on? We could have just went to a reputable college who has an administration department with full records. I spent so many days trying to figure out what was going on with my loan and it's not the loan shark's fault- it's Thinkful. Advertise ****** dollars for a 5 month remote education and you will not see the same sign **** Advertise yourselves correctly. So many, like me, would have chosen something entirely different had it been advertised correctly.
In order for the BBB to appropriately process your response, you MUST answer the question above.
Sincerely,
***** ********

I am on disability and thought that getting into software engineering would help me find a job, as I am no longer able to do the manual labor I used to. I did my research on various coding boot camps, and found Thinkful. They had great reviews. However, their 6-month refund guarantee was the ultimate reason I chose Thinkful, seeing as I would have to take out a loan to pay for tuition and I wanted the security of the refund. I took out the loan for $15,600.00 and enrolled. After enrolling, I found out that Thinkful was actually owned by *****. This was a red flag, as it wasn't advertised and all the positive reviews were from pre-Chegg Thinkful, but I was desperate so I continued the program. From 04/2024 - 08/2024, I was in, and completed, their Software Engineering program. From there I entered their career support program, which lasted until 02/2025. It was upon entering the career support program that I was informed that I had, in fact, never qualified for a refund even though the admissions person had told me otherwise. I tried to fight this, but my inquiries and phone calls went nowhere. I continued to apply for jobs, using the advice of the career coaches to manage my resume and networking approaches. After the career support program ended, Thinkful was officially rebranded as Chegg Skills and all the contact information I had was no longer effective. As I continued to apply for jobs, I learned that I wasn't taught relevant skills by Thinkful. I was told during an interview that the way I was taught to code was considered "bad practice" and "a red flag" in the software industry. Due to this feedback, I decided to get a formal education/degree. Since enrolling at *********************, I have taken several computer science classes, which has only reaffirmed that Thinkful was not teaching me the skill set they claimed they were. I am seeking for Thinkful (now ***** ******) to repay the loan I took out for tuition.Business Response

Hello ******,
We truly appreciate you reaching out and sharing this complaint via BBB. We regret that your job search hasnt resulted in the qualifying role you were expecting. We understand how important it is to find a suitable position aligned with your career goals. Here's what we found in our investigation:
1. Referring to your Enrollment Agreement (see attachments) signed by you, you are based in ***********, which is not one of the approved cities for Tuition Refund Policy eligibility. You may review the Enrollment Agreement (EA) signed by you that has a list of approved cities. Hence, the information shared by Career Support is correct. Additionally, we did not find any communication from the admissions team which stated that you are TRP eligible. In case you have it, we'd be happy to review and further investigate.
2. Additionally:
a.) During your Careers support period, none of the weekly/monthly goals have been found to be completed.
b.) On 2/22/2024, you shared with your careers coach that you have accepted a job offer from ***********************
Lastly, regarding your flag about the way of our teaching coding being a bad practice in the software industry, our data does not indicate anything as such. In fact, a lot of our alumni have shared positive experiences and have been successful in landing good jobs.
With all the above-mentioned observations, we're sorry to report that we would not be able to provide any refund in this case. Rest assured that we have noted your feedback regarding the curriculum which will be investigated with utmost sincerity. We appreciate you sharing them with us.Customer Answer

I also did not record the conversation with my career coach where I explained that I was having technical issues with the Huntr goals, and where she told me not to worry about it because I didn't have a TRP. Here's a more concise version of your message:---I am currently enrolled in the **** ******** *********** ******** with Thinkful, which is now owned by ***** ******. I signed up for the program through a deferred tuition loan of nearly $13,000 with Climb Credit. Unfortunately, I am deeply dissatisfied with the services provided. The course material is inadequate, with minimal coding challenges outside of a single example per module, making it difficult to prepare for mock interviews. My previous mentor was unresponsive and unhelpful, canceling sessions frequently and failing to provide proper guidance or sufficient coding challenges. This lack of preparation contributed to my failing a live assessment twice, which would result in my dismissal from the program. The program is essentially an asynchronous online course with minimal mentorship and support, services that other non-bootcamp platforms offer for a fraction of the cost. The justifications provided by the managementthat students should conduct 80% of their learning through independent researchare unacceptable, especially given the high tuition. Additionally, many of the coding assessments from Thinkful are available on Chegg.com, a service that costs only $22/month, further diminishing the value of the bootcamp.Given the misrepresentation of the program and its lack of sufficient educational support, I believe my deferred tuition loan should be canceled. The services provided do not justify the $13,000 cost, and I feel this situation amounts to a scam.Business Response

This is my second complaint. I am writing to express my deep disappointment and frustration with the response received regarding the ongoing dispute regarding my enrollment in the Thinkful software engineering program. It is evident that there has been a significant misunderstanding or oversight on your part, as your response fails to address the serious issues I have raised.Despite my detailed explanation of the numerous breaches of contract and failures on the part of Thinkful to provide the promised services, your response continues to assert Thinkful's rights without acknowledging the validity of my claims. This dismissive attitude is unacceptable and further compounds the distress I have experienced throughout this ordeal.I want to emphasize that this is not a matter of asserting rights, but rather seeking accountability for the harm inflicted upon me as a result of Thinkful's actions. Your failure to acknowledge and address the issues raised in my previous communication only reinforces my belief that my concerns are not being taken seriously.I implore you to reconsider your stance and engage in a meaningful dialogue to address the substantive issues at hand. Ignoring the valid concerns of a paying customer is not only unethical but also detrimental to your reputation and credibility as an institution.I urge you to prioritize this matter and provide a comprehensive response that demonstrates a genuine commitment to resolving the issues raised. Anything less would be a disservice to both myself and the integrity of your organization.I expect to receive a prompt and substantive response that reflects the seriousness of this situation. Failure to do so will leave me with no choice but to pursue further action to seek redress for the injustices I have endured.Customer Answer

I was promised that by the end of the program I would qualify for jobs that I am just not qualified for. Nevermind the inaccuracy in their promises, the changing of the curriculum, and the long hours with their experts simply trying to figure out why their solutions to my problems werent working. I have not been perfect. But their promises were far from reality, so its hard for me to feel good about my experience. As far as what I want, I want my tuition refunded, or a significant portion taken off with lower monthly payments. I want them to stop advertising and promising jobs, promising refunds for people who they later say are not qualified.Customer Answer

The qualifications for the Tuition Refund Guarantee (***) were presented to you in the Enrollment Agreement and the Course Catalog. You were ineligible for the *** because you live more than a one-hour commuting distance of one of the "Approved Cities." A one-hour commuting distance is defined as no more than a 60-minute-long rush hour commute to city center for an arrival by 9:00 am. Lastly, in August 2023, one month after your graduation, you stopped engaging with your assigned Career Coach. Although you were ineligible for the ***, you still had access to a Career Coach for six months after graduation. Given the observed reasons, we will not be issuing a full nor a partial refund and consider this matter closed.Initial Complaint

I attended the Thinkful Data Analytics bootcamp program. I didnt get the job as promised and still was left with the school loan balance despite them making a tuition free guarantee. My next step is to contact my lawyer in getting my tuition refunded through the court system. I contacted Thinkful to let them know I didnt get the job that would meet the criteria and while still unemployed never being able to find a data analyst job as promised here I was stuck with this school debt that didnt benefit me in the slightest. No job. Thousands of applications. No help. No tuition forgiveness. Trying to rebuild my life in another career since this effort was fruitless.Business Response

We received an email from you on June 14, 2022 noting a change in your job status after having accepted a qualifying role. We were given no detail regarding why the status changed, and therefore shared that you were no longer eligible for the Tuition Refund Guarantee due to you receiving an offer and accepting a qualifying role. At that time, we also offered to connect you with a Career Coach to continue your search. This was our last contact with you. Our records indicate you willingly chose to no longer engage with your Careers team in any job search activity beginning in June 2022. We have reviewed the *********** assigned to you as a part of the job search, and have noted only 1 job tracked. We have no record of any attempt you made to continue in your search.
Despite your ineligibility for the Tuition Refund Guarantee, we are unable to consider any partial refund due to lack of contact with your Careers team post-graduation and lack of documented search activity.Thinkful Advanced Student Support

This is actually my 2nd complaint about Thinkful. I decided not to pursue my intial claim and renroll in the program. I renrolled in July of 2023. I only had a few modules to complete. I completed my final portfolio a day or so after the due date. The school states they never received it and I sent an email asking saying it had been submitted and to review it. They have decided not to and for the 2nd time, I've done the work and have not been able to complete the course.Business Response

On October 3, ****************************************************************************************** case there had been any updates made from the previous version sent September 22, 2023. In this email we offered to have our grading team review the portfolio and provide you with feedback. Based on your efforts to learn and complete the course, we wanted to reach a compromise regarding your status and eligibility for certificate. We followed up again on October 5, 2023, but have yet to receive the final version of the portfolio.
You can still send your final version to us directly for review and next steps.Sincerely,
Thinkful Advanced Student Support
