2 starsThe proximity to the beach and the floor plan of Longview in ***** are great. However the amenities fall short. The size of the pool is outstanding but the filter and vacuum never worked despite three calls to management. The refrigerator is small and the icemaker doesnt work and the kitchen floor is buckling. There are very nice porches but no tables and one floor has no furniture at all. Although well stocked, the kitchen is shabby.Review fromMichelle M

1 starIf I could give Surf or Sound a “0” rating I would. In September 2024, I rented Ocean Lady (Nova Drive, Avon, NC) for 2 weeks. Upon entering the house, there was a strong stench of urine. A dog friendly home, I assumed it was a dog “accident”. Wrong. On the first morning, we woke to a RAT INFESTATION. The rats entered the home through the holes in the sub floor and a bedroom closet. They tore through our food in the kitchen, all of the dog food, and multiple pieces of luggage. Rat ***** were EVERYWHERE. The house was uninhabitable and we temporarily moved to another house in another village. When the owners came to clean things up, 5 rats fell out of the subfloor. It was immediately obvious this was an ongoing issue that was not properly addressed. Surf or Sound treated us as if we were having a bad day at the beach. We ended the vacation a week early but not before Surf or Sound forced us to pay for our overnight in the rat infested house as it was “standard industry practice”. ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? There was a very long drawn out process to try and receive a refund but it was unsuccessful and I am merely grateful my guests and dog were not poisoned by the rodenticide the exterminator spilled on the carpet. Please be warned…Surf or Sound does not maintain their houses in a way that is safe for people or pets.Review fromMonica V

1 starVery disappointed I have to use this channel to communicate! I have many communications trying to gain resolution with no success. I guess when you pay in full in advance, they really don’t have to do anything! We rented Slainte 320 for three weeks, Sept/Oct 2024. we checked out 3 days early due to the frustration and more importantly our safety concerns. First, I spent many hours cleaning when we arrived. Arriving late in the evening, we opened the dishwasher and it was full of dirty dishes. No big deal, we ran the dishwasher and it flooded the kitchen. The technician said known issue, still was not resolved when we left. This is when I realized how dirty the floors were! Our rags that we used to clean up the water were filthy! One floor mat was stuck to the floor.. we didn’t even try and get it up and clean. We had no big screen tv, took a week to fix), stove top and fridge and issues(fridge was fixed a few days before we left and the stove was not fixed) final straw was when the dryer did work and the technician advised how dirty it was and we are lucky there was not a fire. Hot tub cover was a disaster (was fixed). Called multiple times and texted, requesting our second cleaning, which we paid for, never received, and only communication was their standard response, we are sorry.. been esculated to our team! This was the response on everything. Three weeks after check out, still no response! Funny how my first review was not posted! Shame, because the oxb is one of our favorite vacation spots and this house is in a good location and great sunset views.Review fromAngie P

1 starDo not rent from this company. Our vacation home was a total wreck. Trash everywhere pull with slime, black mold in the showers, refrigerator ice dispenser, covered in black mold it took someone two different days to come and fix TV remotes that would not work, Refrigerator was nasty, out of our seven day vacation we have someone had to stay at the house the first three days for people from the realty company to come out and look at all of the issues so really we only got a four day vacation. We have been coming to the Outer Banks for 20 years and this was by far the worst house we have ever stayed in , the house is in Salvo and the house is Calypso house number 439. Not to be ugly, but this house was Worth about half the price we paid for it. The furniture on the website for the upstairs living room was completely different than what it showed on the website and the furniture that we actually had in the house was completely wore out. The cushions were ripped and the couches look like they were about 30 years old and someone put them on the curb and they put them in our house, the realty company did send people over to look at the issues they sprayed the black mold with bleach they got the remotes working. They scrub the swimming pool but the house literally looks like it was left by the previous renters and no one ever came in and cleaned it in between check out and check out times the fans in the showers don’t work that’s why you have black mold. As long as we can help it, we will never rent from this company again, and whoever the homeowners are of this house they should be aware of the poor property management of their rental house at the Outer Banks.Review fromMichael W

1 starWe rented Dream Catcher By The Sea for a week in September of 2024 through SurforSound We paid over $**** for this 9 bedroom home - family reunion. Our experience was horrible.
When we arrived the house was very hot and they had the thermostats locked at 72 degrees. With how hot, humid and sunny it was, the house was HOT especially the Family Room/Kitchen area that has huge windows with no blinds. The grill by the pool that they boasted about in their literature was completely rusted and filthy. We called in a maintenance report. No one came. We called again, no response. Uncomfortable, we bought fans. Then we started picking up cockroaches everywhere. When we went to shower in the first floor master - no hot water. The toilet in the third floor master broke next. Thankfully on day three it got cloudy which helped a bit with the heat but then it started to rain - hard - and water started gushing in the second floor master window. When we opened the blind we found the window held together with scotch tape, I have pictures, and there was a 2 inch gap at the top of the window which was letting air in, bugs and now water. Maintenance did come this time and boarded up the window. In talking to their Property Manager he said other renters did not complain about the window. Here they knew about the condition of the window and the use of scotch tape, like you wrap presents with, to hold the window together. Unbelievable.
Needless to say, we are very unhappy with our stay, the dreamy advertising of this not well maintained $**** a week rental home, SurforSound’s response, how we are being treated and the $****** refund which according to Orville is “the value of the second floor master bedroom for 7 days” and by their rules the only amount he can give us back.
Do not rent any property from SurforSound. They don’t properly maintain their homes and THEY DON’T CARE.Review fromMegan R

1 starWe had a Horrible customer service experience due to bed bugs and roaches in the Sound Adventure 430. We found them on Wednesday morning at 6:15 and were finally able to contact someone at 8:45. The only thing that Surf or Sound did was call a pest control company. That was literally it! The last communication as a lease holder I had with anyone was at 10:13 am when they told me pest control would be there between 10:30 and 11:00 am. They would not help in anyway and when I repeatedly asked what the protocol was they would not tell me. The lack of communication was HORRIBLE! I can’t believe after spending ***** dollars for a week we would be treated this way. We were very respectful throughout the process but got no reciprocation. Needless to say the rest of our vacation was spent on the lookout for bed bugs and fearing that they would be brought home with us. Everyone was on edge especially when it came to sleeping. Well turns out we should’ve been because the next two mornings we were greeted with cockroaches on the bedroom ceiling and one crawling on my mother in laws neck. Again we contacted them and were unable to get a response. We ended up leaving early because we were all stressed and had no piece of mind left. We also tried contacting the owner with no avail. We have been coming here for over 30 years and have been evacuated twice for hurricanes and nothing compares to the experience of this year. Once home we filed a claim for a refund and per usual for them they downplayed the whole thing and gave us ****** for loss of one bedroom for 3 days, not cool. We tried emailing and calling them after receiving this information and got no response. I believe our numbers were blocked. Although our vacation was ruined I hope that we can deter some others from getting involved in any experience like this and booking with another company. Other things wrong were moldy shower curtains, non working dryer (great for bed bugs), mold on ceilings, and dirty floors.Surf or Sound Realty

Please know everyone here is extremely sympathetic to the distress and disruption that can be felt when confronted with this kind of event. We also understand these guests would have preferred a greater cadence of communication. We regret missing the opportunity to meet and exceed this expectation. Please also know that the scale of financial compensation provided for this inconvenience was calculated according to standard industry practices. We are always eager to address any concern as soon as it is brought to our attention (i.e. appliance repair, additional cleaning).Review fromShelly G

1 starDon’t rent from this company. The property management will not return calls even when there are serious issues with the house . No hot water for 3 days. Called our first night and got no reply. Had to drive to the property management office to even speak with someone that was not a call center. While at the office we were told that “It was not their fault”. Maybe they don’t know property management means they are responsible for taking care of the property.
Middle of day two the sent someone to hook up a propane tank (BBQ) size for 22 people, two dishwashers, two washers. You can imagine how long that lasted. We were quickly out. So the following day was a new trip to the management office. Finally on day three “Robert” from the propane company at first would not touch tank to refill due to it being rigged up. And not to mention that it had a leak and had been leaking gas. Robert then proceeds to tell my husband that NO ONE called him and that he was on call that weekend and would have come to fill it up. So in essence with the exception of the leaky bbq tank we had no hot water. And many times calling and going to the office we were told they would expedite us and keep us informed. However, that was a lie there was no communication.
After all of this they gave us a $****** refund when the house was around ** to rent for the week. I will redact this when I get my exact total from the payments made.Surf or Sound Realty

Please know we are always eager to address any concern as soon as it is brought to our attention. While we take issue with some of the details contained in this review, this leaseholder was compensated for the inconvenience and the time it took to resolve the issue. Generally, our teams are able to resolve any maintenance concern promptly. The delays described in this instance are not at all typical for the service we provide, and this compensation came with our heartfelt apologies.Review fromAli H

1 starSurf or Sound does not advocate for customers. I have been coming to the *** for over 20 years and this is just absurd. There is mold in the vents of the home and the roof is leaking. The fact they feel it is a safe enviroment tells me they do not periodically check in with their staff and have the proper protocols followed. The house rented is Point Break in Hatteras. Screens are missing on windows and doors, or are torn. The roof is leaking and water is running down the walls in the main stair way. There is mold in the vents and condensation forming over the vents with no way to keep it from happening. This is a health hazard. In my job, I have to report homes with safety issues to the county and this one needs reported. You can see where they have painted over mold in the home. There was broken furniture and burnt lights in the house that we had to have replaced during our stay. This company needs to be held responsible for their incompetence and their inability to rectify issues such as this. Please do your research before using this company.Surf or Sound Realty

Please know we are always eager to address any concern as soon as it is brought to our attention. Because this person is not among our recent leaseholders, we cannot speak to the specifics of the stay referenced here. Although conditions comparable to the observations described in this review have not been reported or logged in our systems this year, we appreciate this new opportunity to share this person’s suggestions for renovations and improvements with the owner of this home. In our experience, condensation on cold metal HVAC vents can occur when guests leave doors or windows open and warm humid air interacts with the cold metal. The wet surfaces can quickly collect dust that may be misidentified as mold.Review fromAmy S

1 starWe are extremely unhappy with our entire experience with Surf or Sound Realty! When arriving at our rental, The Sleepy Dog, on August 24th we immediately noticed a horrible smell, but wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe it was from the previous tenants trash, next day the smell isn’t fading and we have tried some air fresheners, dryer sheets in the air vents, etc. Monday early morning I log a ticket that something is wrong, possibly something dead in the walls or air vents. Was told someone would be out. Next day smell is still there, we discover live maggots on the bed in the master bed. I immediately call in and demand that someone come out asap. Shortly after a young maintenance worker came out as we discovered they were falling from the ceiling fan, which was on in the room, throwing the maggots around the room! Turns out there was a dead decomposing rat in the attic just above that room, which he removed and “cleaned” the area. I had to ask him to come back in almost immediately while he was still in the driveway because the maggots were still falling out of the fan. Long story short, the maggots and then ants and rat feces continued to fall onto the bed through out the week, we notified surf or sound multiple times and was told each time they were working on the issue. We never saw another person come into the home! Rat feces was found again up until the last day we were there! We could not use the master bedroom the entire week! I asked for reimbursement and was only offered $***, for loss of 1 bedroom. These people are a joke. This was a health issue along with a major inconvenience for my entire family and they clearly do not care about either or the happiness of their guests. We will never rent from them again!Surf or Sound Realty

Please know we are always eager to address any concern as soon as it is brought to our attention. Also, we all sincerely empathize with anyone experiencing this sort of rare occurrence, as well as with the disappointment guests may feel in such an instance. Further, we understand that these guests found the financial compensation we have provided to fall short of their expectations. While we appreciate the opportunity to revisit the cadence and content of our responses - to evaluate their quality and learn from any potential missteps - we stand by the compensation amount, as it was calculated using formulas commonly used in this industry, taking into account proportion of the property rendered unusable and the portion of the stay affected.
