Price gouging Held hostage with high service fee and then unaffordable and triple charge for parts and labor.Customer Answer
Date: 07/16/2025
I was charged greater than $500 for a $50 part and 15 minutes of service. The initial service fee for arriving at my home is so expensive, the company will charge exorbitant rates knowing you are stuck.Business Response

Hello,
I'm sorry to hear that you were unsatisfied with our services. Unfortunately, with inflation, cost of services has gone up significantly, and we can't do much about that if we want to remain competitive within our industry. VanderHyde Service also is a no surprises company, which means we believe in giving options upfront so that there is never a concern about what it is going to cost. We do charge a dispatch fee that covers for the technician to be dispatched to your home along with covering a brief diagnostic. And if you decide to move forward with the work that dispatch fee gets, put towards any work you decide to move forward with.
I hope that helps clear up any concerns on pricing. We strive to serve our clients in a timely manner with efficiency and professionalism.
Thank you,
VanderHyde Team

On March 6, 2024, Vander Hyde Mechanical repaired a plumbing leak and replaced a water heater in my home. It took them 3 days to.complete the work. Including installing a faulty water heater. No estimate was given as to cost of work, and I was refused a detailed description of parts, labor costs etc. Upon repeated calls to VanderHyde, a bit more detail was given from the manager but it was still incomplete, including a refusal to provide cost of labor. The manager entered my home without permission, claiming he had knocked and was unable to find the clearly visible doorbell. His manner was belligerent and intimidating which I believe was due to me being an elderly woman. They were inefficient and unpleasant and uncommunicative and I believe they were intentionally refused to provide information and took advantage of me, as an elderly woman. I financed the cost through their lender and have made first payment. Their charge was $5729 and manager required that I finance $6000. Through ************** so i opened the account with them to pay for it.Customer Answer

Customer called 3/6/24 to ********************** a broken pipe and the customer had to turn water off. We sent a technician out the same day. We provided the customer with options to repair the faulty fixture along with the toilet valve, we then found the Water Heater was not functioning properly along with the drain backing up. We provided the client with options and she signed and approved the work March 6th.Client chose to finance the work, which then she signed up through Synchrony for $5,700.00 for all the work to be performed. We returned on March 7th to complete the work. The client called 3/8/24 saying the water heater was not working. We then returned the same day and found the Gas Valve on the new Water Heater was faulty and we replaced it at no additional charge.

I am rejecting this response because: These repairs should not have been this expensive, nor was an estimate offered. The repairs also should not have taken so long and it should not have been necessary for a third day to ensure that a new water heater worked. I also felt that intimidating tactics were used, including entering my house without notice.

I am rejecting this response because: The work done was far too expensive and should not have required 3 days to complete, with the third day required to fix new water heater installed by them. I was not given adequate estimate before or during work and as a senior, I felt intimidating tactics were used, and noted that there have been complaints by other seniors.in addition, my home was entered without my permission, although the doorbell was clearly visible.

I am rejecting this response because: I had no problem with the charge to. come out. My problem is that the firm offered us
four options ranging in price from $400 - $800. none of which had anything to do with the job we engaged them to do......which was to remove a variable switch and put in a simple click-switch.

In November 2020, we purchased a Generac standby home generator through VanderHyde with a ten-year warrantee. In June 2022, their service tech replaced a corroded part and pressured my mother to purchase an extended 18-month warrantee through VanderHyde for $988. She gave him a check with a notation it was for an 18-month extended warrantee, but he refused to give her a receipt so she called the office to get a copy, but they never sent her any paperwork. They cashed her check. In Feb 2023, she reported a yellow light on the unit and they came to perform annual maintenance and she paid by check $99 for the call. About ten days ago, there was a power outage due to a tornado for four days. The generator worked fine, but a couple of days later the yellow light was on again. She reported it to VanderHyde and they wanted $324 up front to dispatch a service tech to diagnose the unit, then would charge an additional $545 for oil, spark plugs, and filter -- nearly $900. She told me (her daughter) and I contacted VanderHyde. The third woman I spoke with was ***, who I was told is in charge of Generac products. *** confirmed my mother has a ten year factory warrantee; the $324 dispatch and diagnostic plus $545 oil, etc.. fees; and stated the $988 warrantee sold to her was to "guarantee the work done that day for 18 months"! What kind of company charges a customer to guarantee the workmanship of their employees? When I questioned *** further about the $324 and $545 fees, she said she tells customers they may not need the oil change, etc.. only every two years and instead of charging $545, we could get service for $83. I'd heard enough to know we want nothing further to do with a company which exploits elderly customers and told her not to send anyone to Mom's home because we would be using a different company.Business Response

Hello,
The 18 month warranty that the client purchased with the repair in June of 2022 covers the work that was performed on the corroded part. VanderHyde provides options to their clients and let the client's choose what option they would like to go with. Typically if there is a yellow light on the generator that does indicate he needs maintenance. Your Generac Generator Warranty does not cover maintenance or diagnostics. If the Generator runs for 4 days straight the Generator will indicate it needs maintenance. A copy of the invoice was sent to the client via email. We strive to serve our clients in a timely manner with efficiency and professionalism.
Thank you!

I was charged approximately $576.00 for a furnace/hot water heater safety inspection as well as a furnace tune up at a rental property. They have yet to send me the results of their inspections despite speaking with them and requesting it. I also have since had a second heating and cooling company come out and advise that no tune up was performed and supported it with photos of the inside of the furnace that was filthy and clearly untouched. They also provided incorrect information in regards to city requirements and gave an inflated quote for repairs. Minimally I would like the fee for the furnace tune up refunded.Initial Complaint

On November 10th VandeHyde Charged me $866 for a repair on my water heater The Water heater was not fixed and they proceeded to say that I needed to pay them an additional $1000 to fix it. That's the price of a new water heater. I paid the $866 in good faith that they would fix the water heater and that did not happen. The water heater is currently not fixed. I would request a refund for them for the $866 they charged me.Business Response

I called Vander Hyde Service 10/19 for a sewer backup in our basement. *** from Vanderhyde Service came out same day and I showed him what I had tried to snake (25ft) and he agreed there was a clog in our lateral to the street. Before performing the snake of the line he required that I sign the invoice for service (attached) and pay the $632 amount up front (bank statement attached). While an effort was made to clear out the clog, only 75 feet of pipe was searched for a clog and was unable to find it. He didnt have longer line to go the full 100 feet to the main sewer connection, however I was invoiced for 100ft of snaking and charged the full $632 service cost as if the work had been completed. *** recommended we call the city, which we did and they came out while he was still here and the city confirmed the main sewer line was working, further confirming it was a clog somewhere in the remaining 25 feet he was unable to snake. I went back to work while the city was on their way out and my wife took over. He told my wife he did not have the right equipment to fix the issue and recommended we contact another plumbing company locally who had 100ft line. That same day we contacted ******* at ****** Plumbing to come out and he was able to clear the line after ~2 hours of work which he confirmed with a camera and physical flushing of the toilets for 5 minutes straight. ******* charged a similar amount for more service, except he actually completed the service. Invoice from ****** Plumbing is attached. When asked for a refund for the drain clear which Vander Hyde Service did not complete they said their technician completed the service of snaking 100ft which is a lie as he told me he only had 75 feet of line, I watched him snake the line myself, and another plumber found and showed me the clogs at 90 and 95 ft with a camera which would make it impossible for *** to have snaked 100ft. I am willing to pay the trip charge, but not any other cost. Invoice 10/24Business Response

Hello,
We strive to serve our clients in a timely manner with efficiency and professionalism. We understand that we did not meet your expectations. Unfortunately, we were not given the opportunity to remedy the situation before another company was called out. However the client waited to contact our office about the "non completed" service until on the next business day to inform ** he had called another company out and wanted a refund. We did perform the service that the client signed and approved, which covered an hour of drain cleaning and including the equipment needed. The technician performed that work, with the option you chose we did not charge you the trip charge. I am sorry that VanderHyde was not given the opportunity to resolve it.
Thank you!

I am rejecting this response because:Your company was not provided the option to come back and complete the service paid for because YOUR EMPLOYEE told us he could not complete the job and recommended we go to a different company to get it fixed. Nowhere in the options I was given or in the invoice I received was drain cleaning mentioned, nor was a 1 hour time limit specified. I was required to sign the lowest tier package offered and pay for the service before he even started working. I was unable to run water in my house, so yes I requested emergency service from another company because your company was unable to complete it and told ** to go somewhere else.
Sincerely,
