    In March of 2024, I received a bill from a debt collection agency (I.C. ******* ***** on behalf of Pediatrix Medical Group in the amount of $2,663.46 for the birth of my son ************************ (DOB 11/1/2021) at ********** Hospital, in ************. The original billed amount was $45,342.00 and my primary insurance Highmark had paid $42,678.54. The remaining balance of $2,663.46 was supposed to be paid by ************ ********* due to ************* legislation that premature NICU children receive ******** coverage for their NICU stay. When I called Pediatrix to inform them of their billing error (************ ******** was not billed) and move the debt out of collections, I spent 30 min on the phone with the agent who refused to update my insurance information on the Pediatrix account and also refused to transfer me to his supervisor for assistance. The only thing the Pediatrix agent communicated was that he was unable to correspond with me now that the debt is transferred to the collections agency. He told me I need to speak with the debt collector to pay off this debt.When I contacted the debt collector (IC Systems), they indicated they informed Pediatrix Medical Group I had ******** coverage for the date of service. Pediatrix sent back a response letter stating that I still owe the debt.I next called the ************ ************** and spoke with a caseworker, who informed me that if Pediatrix Medical Group could simply generate an original bill with my sons name (************************) and with the date of service (11/1/2021), they would be able to backdate my ******** coverage to cover and pay off the balance due for 11/1/2021. Pediatrix Medical Group has been incredibly difficult to contact, communicate with to resolve a simple issue: a debt that ******** would be able to pay off if Pediatrix could generate an original bill. I may have to seek legal counsel if this unethical behavior continues.

    As a medical claims auditor in previous role, this is the absolute worst coordination of benefits billing experience I have ever encountered. I had 2 children back to back. Father is primary policy and mine secondary and I had already established the coordination correctly with both policies, however this medical billing group never got the claims right...ever. I had to call the insurance companies separately to remind them to pay as primary or as secondary and for the secondary to deny claims when there isn't a primary payer amount. I should NOT have to do their job for them and of all the companies that deal with coordination of benefits, pediatric medical billing does this all day every day, yet this group still doesn't get it right. Even after I called my secondary and provided them the primary EOB and they processed the claim AND I paid it, they still sent a final notice AND reprocessed the claim to the secondary insurance AGAIN. I had to do this process 2 years in a row with both children. Coordination of billing is not this difficult.
