In February, after two consultations with Dr. Maloney regarding a tooth that was giving me problems, that issue was resolved when Maloney referred me to a surgical dentist located in the same building. During my visit, I indicated that after the surgery I would like to have my teeth cleaned and an appointment was made for February 14th. Close to that appointment date, I received a call to reschedule. Another call was later received to reschedule once again. I was looking forward to finally getting my teeth cleaned on June 2nd.

So, finally I am getting my teeth cleaned. When the hygienist started preparing me for x-rays by asking that I remove my jewelry, I asked “why?” I’ve never had to do that before in my years of having cleanings accomplished. She rattled off something about the “process”.

During the x-rays I gagged often. When I returned to the exam room, more x-rays were taken. Eventually the hygienist explained all that was wrong with my teeth/gums and stated what needed to be taken care of. Okay…when do I get my teeth cleaned? Not today apparently. Process finished. I was escorted to the front desk to make the appointments they said were needed and pay the bill. No, I do not have insurance, which your office was aware of from my February visit.

So, I ended up with a billing statement for $436 for a COMPREHENSIVE ORAL EVALUATION ($120), Panoramic and Intraoral images ($150 and $166, respectively. I didn't ask for an evaluation, only teeth cleaning.

No cleaning of my teeth was done at this appointment. Perhaps I could have accepted all and rested well if my primary request for teeth cleaning had been executed.

My suggestion for the office going forward is to let patients (especially seniors) know what the “process” is if one desires their teeth cleaned and be given the option to say yes or no to the additional costs involved at that time. This would have saved me $436 for the comprehensive exam that I did not have the money for.
