This is an outstanding school for you and your best friend. Make no mistakes, you are the one that will be trained on how to firmly and positively have your pup be a solid citizen that is a joy to take everywhere you go. I've been going to this school for 30 years. Each new dog I get, I take all the way through their advanced obedience class. Three of my dogs trained there have gone on to be service dogs. And yes, go thru to advanced class, and you too can have a wonderful companion as beautifully behaved as a service dog.
My dogs all love it. They get soooo excited when we're driving there and they realize where we are going. That speaks volumes to their right blend of mostly positive rewards and leash corrections. My dogs are sooooooo happy to be there.
There is no once size fits all when it comes to dog training. Each dog is an individual that needs the right blend of energy from you in different situations and for that matter equipment that is appropriate to their breed. They sort this out early on and make sure you have the right equipment, energy level, pitch of voice, ... for your dog.
Make sure you carve out a little time each day for homework assignments. The training doesn't just happen once week in class. The work you do at home (which is easy to fit into a daily routine) is when the teaching really becomes solid.
Nancy, the owner, is also brilliant at handling problematic behaviors and/or aggressive dogs in (private lessons). She's helped bring many a dog around. (And this also takes owner commitment.) And, she individually coached me with some of the service dog tasks I've trained my pups to do.
Group classes are small so the dogs are not overwealmed and each owner gets the right amount of individual attention. However, because of this, sometimes there can be a waiting list for the next class to open up. I suggest you get on it when you first bring your pup home.
Again, an absolutely wonderful place for you and your dog to learn well.
