My brother lives with me and borrowed my vehicle. Subsequently, I received a letter from Altumint/the speed camera operator stating I had driven too fast on the day/time my brother drove the vehicle and that I needed to pay $100. My brother insisted he had gone the speed limit and that school was not in session when he drove on the road (the lights indicating the school speed limit was in effect were not flashing). We were about to move and I didn't want correspondence to go missing/us to be sent mistakenly to collections because Altumint did not have my new address, so I advised him to pay the $100. I sent the notarized form stating I had not been operating the vehicle, along with a notarized letter signed by myself and my brother stating he had been driving it at the time and enclosing a check from my brother. This was sent to the address provided in the letter I had received. Subsequently, a letter was sent to my former address and given to me by that landlord, stating that I had not paid the fee. I called and spoke with a representative on 7/24 at 12:30pm, who stated the check had been received and to ignore the letter; however, she stated that it was on my record as having paid and that they never received the notarized letter I sent. This is impossible as the letter and form were folded around the check. I think this is a scam as they cashed a check from someone who was not me and put it on my record (I do not believe them or trust this will not show on a background/character check, as they ignored the letter and form I sent and then told me they were not received, which is impossible as the check was folded in them). I want my record corrected to show it was not me driving and that I did not pay/accept the charge, and I want my brother's $100 refunded since Altumint can't find the letter that was around the check, giving no confidence in their ability to pay attention to speed limits that vary based on time of day if they can't find a letter in an envelope.

    Business Response

    Date: 10/09/2025

Altumint appreciates the opportunity to respond to this complaint and regrets any inconvenience the customer experienced.

After reviewing the matter, Altumint confirms that the payment in question was properly applied and that the citation has been marked as resolved in our system. There is no record of delinquency or adverse report associated with this citation.

Although the citation was validly processed under the registered vehicle owner in accordance with Maryland law, Altumint recognizes that the customer made a good-faith effort to follow the required procedures and that there may have been a miscommunication regarding documentation. Given the specific circumstances in this matter, Altumint will issue a refund of the $100 payment and considers this matter fully resolved.

Altumint considers this complaint closed and no further action is required

I have a couple questions before I consider this response satisfactory:

1.) Will the company be reaching out to me to get my mailing address? Because I have not heard from them directly and do not know how they plan to follow through on their intention of returning the $100, due to the original reason for my advising my brother to pay the citation (as well as my good-faith effort to follow their required procedures) being that at the time we were moving (and have since changed addresses). Will the company be contacting me to obtain my mailing address, or should I give it to BBB?

2.) Why do they state that the citation was "validly processed in accordance with Maryland law" when: A.) The citation in questioned was issued for a vehicle in operation in the ************************; B.) I am not a resident of ********; C.) I have never lived in nor driven in ********; D.) The vehicle was not registered in ********; and E.) I was in no way informed that my use of public highways in the Commonwealth of ******** was considered automatic consent to be under Maryland law?

I would like the answers to these (very pertinent, in my opinion) questions before I consider this matter resolved satisfactorily.

On Monday, 10/27, I was driving and missed two incoming calls (4:35pm and 4:38pm). Upon listening to the voicemail, I learned that it was ****, the Director of **************** for **********************, and that he planned to call me again the next day. I called back but, as it was after 5pm, was only able to leave a voicemail, where I told him when my lunch break was and when I expected to be off work. It is now Thursday the 30th and I have not received another call. I attempted to call him back three times on my lunch break today (12:22pm, 12:23pm, and 12:25pm). All three times, the phone just kept ringing, then abruptly dropped the call. I looked up the Altumint phone number from their website and called twice (12:26pm and 12:28pm). Both times, the phone rang for about a minute, then an automated voice informed me that the call could not connect. However, I was able to call BBB in *********, ** (at 12:30pm), as well as the Dispute Resolution Team phone number (at 12:32pm) that was attached to BBB's earlier communication to me. I do not know why I have received no return call, either on Tuesday as I was told I would, nor today; nor do I know why neither phone number for Altumint even offered me the opportunity to leave voicemail. I am very disappointed and frustrated right now. I would like BBB to be aware of this attempt at communication with Altumint and what the result has been for me.

After a week and a half and calling the number from my voicemail (as well as the general Altumint phone number) several times, I was able to connect with the Director of ***************** I was able to give him my mailing address and to address my concerns. He answered my questions to the best of his ability, and he was courteous, understanding of my experience, and professional. He advised me a standard refund takes 4-6 weeks, but he will speak with accounting to see if they can expedite it. He took the time to explain what had happened with the notarized letter I sent in, how it was able to be missed, and he was honest about his uncertainty with exactly how everything is processed (leading to my notarized letter being missed). He took the time to ask if I had any other questions and to explain how their camera systems can account for school speed limit zones during certain hours. He addressed the reference to Maryland law, which was evidently a typo on the part of the person who wrote that response. In all, I appreciate his speaking with me and explaining better what I did not understand. I am glad to consider this dealt with and will consider the matter fully resolved once I have received the refund. Until then, I am satisfied with the steps Altumint is taking to make this situation right.
