I contacted "Upright" Law (hilarious name for them considering they're far from upright), with questions about filing for bankruptcy in 2019. I ended up setting up a payment plan for $75 a paycheck to pay the $1,800 retainer in full. In 2020, I took part of my tax return and paid off the rest of the retainer. Although I never submitted any paperwork to them, they are claiming they've done $1,800 worth of work (including 4 and 1/2 hours trying to reach out to me when the ONLY communication I received from them was 4 automated emails indicating they were trying to reach me). I decided to not file bankruptcy so I called to cancel my petition and request a refund. I was informed that all attorney fees have been claimed due to work completed and the only refund I would receive would be the $300 something filing fee. I have absolutely no problem paying for work completed but I did NOT receive $1,800 worth of service. There are several other complaints on the internet regarding this company and their shady practices. While I should have looked into this farther before I decided to try and do business with them, I was desperate at the time and trusted what I was being told. Now I can see why there are so many complaints and they have a 1/5 customer rating. I'm not sure if it's possible to audit the work that was done, or if there is any way to prove that I did not receive the communication they're claiming I received, but this is completely unacceptable. I will gladly pay for services completed (two of the fees mentioned by the manager I spoke with were legit and made sense) but they are filing false information when it comes to billing for services.

I have only left 1 star because there is not an option to leave zero stars. Mine seems a similiar story as everyone else. I Paid $50 per week directly from my paychecks totalling $1895, for bankruptcy services. Upon learning of the accusations of shady business practices, false representation, and legal troubles that this company was navigating at the time, I became very nervous to proceed any further with them. Ultimately deciding to request a full refund prior to any filings, documentation, credit counseling or any other services rendered. An UPRIGHT representative confirmed over the phone, and also in an e-mail, that I would receive a full refund in the mail within 40 business days. I thought initially that this was an extraordinarily long wait, but knew nothing of the processes required to halt services and issue such a refund. So I wrongfully assumed the best, 10/10 would not make that mistake again. It has been 11 weeks since the promise of a refund and still nothing. What's worse is that they have now closed up their operation and it seems more and more likely that I may never receive my money back as I am unable to speak to anyone at all regarding this matter. There has been zero efforts of communication from anyone to inform me of their untimely closing or any other pertinant to me information. Further, when Ive attempted to communicate via phone, email, and/or letter writting there has been no response or confirmation since my aforesaid acknowledgment of their refund debt that they owed to me. At this point, I have no choice but to assume that i've simply had nearly $2000 stolen from me and my family by these perpetrators that, as it turns out, prayed upon those most in need to line their shameful pockets and expand their nefarious reach into our already struggling communities, in search of more individuals to prey upon.
