I contacted "Upright" Law (hilarious name for them considering they're far from upright), with questions about filing for bankruptcy in 2019. I ended up setting up a payment plan for $75 a paycheck to pay the $1,800 retainer in full. In 2020, I took part of my tax return and paid off the rest of the retainer. Although I never submitted any paperwork to them, they are claiming they've done $1,800 worth of work (including 4 and 1/2 hours trying to reach out to me when the ONLY communication I received from them was 4 automated emails indicating they were trying to reach me). I decided to not file bankruptcy so I called to cancel my petition and request a refund. I was informed that all attorney fees have been claimed due to work completed and the only refund I would receive would be the $300 something filing fee. I have absolutely no problem paying for work completed but I did NOT receive $1,800 worth of service. There are several other complaints on the internet regarding this company and their shady practices. While I should have looked into this farther before I decided to try and do business with them, I was desperate at the time and trusted what I was being told. Now I can see why there are so many complaints and they have a 1/5 customer rating. I'm not sure if it's possible to audit the work that was done, or if there is any way to prove that I did not receive the communication they're claiming I received, but this is completely unacceptable. I will gladly pay for services completed (two of the fees mentioned by the manager I spoke with were legit and made sense) but they are filing false information when it comes to billing for services.Business response

I am a managing attorney at UpRight Law. Upon receipt of this complaint, I investigated the matter. Upon hiring our firm, former client verbally and in writing agreed that in the event of cancellation, any services provided would be applied toward funds paid, and the unearned portion would be returned. Former client failed to respond to approximately 18 calls, 18 texts, and 33 emails from our firm in an attempt to obtain information to file the former client's case. Each call, text, and email was documented in the client's file. All communications were sent to contact information that former client had provided us with. After five months of no response from former client, the file was closed in September of 2021 due to inactivity and lack of any communication to our office from former client. Client's filing fee, which was held in trust has been returned.Initial Complaint

I started my bankruptcy case with upright law in October of 2018 and paid $1,645 and they drug their feet for over 3 years on getting my case filed that I had to make a second attempt to cancel my case with them today in which they tried everything they could to keep me from canceling. When I finally got them to realize that I wanted my case canceled he started listing off the fee that I would be charged. After he was done listing everything, he said that I would be owed a refund of $496 out of the $1,645 that I paid. I'm definitely owed more that $496 considering that they didn't do anything that they were paid to do. They're the ones that drug my case out for over 3 years now and then want to charge me over $1,000 for nothing being done on my case. My bankruptcy still hasn't been filed.Initial Complaint

I was searching online for a bankruptcy attorney when I found Upright Law. They offered a payment plan which I liked. I talked to their people for about 30-40 minutes. I did talk about a payment plan of $219 every 2 weeks until the $1900 or so was paid off.I gave them my debit card number. The first payment was supposed to come out on 7/31/21 but I never e-signed the documents that would finalize this deal. We did not have a meeting of the mind.I never talked to the attorney assigned to me either,Stacy Davis. She left VMs but I never called her. I found a lawyer that would charge me $1,000, filing fee included, so I was considering him instead of Upright Law to save myself over $1,000. I called them for a full refund the first week in August. The young man said I had to fill out the electronic refund request form and email it back, which I did. He said I should expect a paper check the first week in September. September is half way over and I still do not have anything from Upright Law.Business response
