Misrepresentation and Deceptive Enrollment Practices. I sincerely hope that you can assist me in addressing a distressing situation involving DeVry University. This issue pertains to misrepresentation and deceptive enrollment practices that have had significant repercussions on my educational and financial wellbeing.I enrolled in the Master's program in Accounting at Devry based on the advice of their university advisor, who unequivocally assured me that I did not need a Bachelor's degree in accounting and could commence the Master's program without any course restrictions. Encouraged by this assurance, I embarked on this academic journey. However, upon completing my first semester and endeavoring to register for the next course, I was repeatedly confronted with registration errors. My attempts to resolve these issues led me to contact the university's phone line, where I learned that I was ineligible to register for the courses due to an absence of prerequisites. It was further disclosed that I could only register for a single area, "General Accounting.In order to graduate from this program, I am required to fulfill four distinct requirements across various areas. Given that I can only fulfil one area it is now evident that I will never be able to attain a Master's degree in Accounting from this university. This has not only jeopardized my educational aspirations but has also placed me in an overwhelming financial burden, as I had taken out a loan to fund my education.*** contacted approximately 7 different advisors ( spent hours on the phone) including the one who initially enrolled me as well as the one who was later assigned to me. Everyone assured a prompt follow and never called up regarding this matter. This is unacceptable. I was mislead by admissions and ended up taking courses that had nothing at all to do with field of study I was interested in. I requested transcripts including a copy of my ged that DeVry used financial aid to obtain and they refuse to release that copy. I feel this is retaliation for wanting to transfer due ti being mislead and now I have to pay again for a copy of my ged and wait an additional 8 weeks to transferBusiness Response

This letter is in response to the October 18, 2023 complaint ********************************* submitted to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). DeVry University (DeVry) understands that **************** is concerned with taking courses he felt did not apply to his field of study. Additionally,**************** states that DeVry will not provide him with a copy of his *** that he submitted during the admissions process, which he also alleges that his Federal Student Aid was used to pay for.
On August 25, 2022, **************** signed an enrollment agreement for the Bachelor of Science in Technical Management program with a specialty in Criminal Justice starting in the September 2022 session that began on August 29, 2022. DeVry records show that **************** utilized Federal Student Aid to pay tuition and fees.
On August 30, 2022, DeVry submitted a request for ****************** *** and paid the required fee of $10 via check. ***************** Federal Student Aid was not used to pay this fee. DeVry received ***************** *** on October 3, 2022.
Pages ***** of DeVrys 2022-2023 academic catalog, which was in effect at the time of ****************** enrollment,outline the requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Technical Management program (Attachment 1). The program required a total of 122 credit hours for graduation,which included required courses from various subjects. Of the 122 credit hours required, 27 were required from ****************** Criminal Justice specialty.
**************** was enrolled at DeVry continuously through the September 2023 session, which concluded on October 21, 2023. On October 18, 2023, **************** called DeVry to request a copy of his ***, stating that he thought it would be included in the transcripts that he previously requested. DeVry informed **************** that the *** could not be released due to DeVry policy. **************** was advised to contact the New *************** of ********* in order to request a copy of his ***. **************** called DeVry two additional times that same day and spoke to two different DeVry representatives and was told the same information. **************** asked to speak with a supervisor and was transferred to one. **************** was told the same information. During that same call with a supervisor, **************** asked to be dropped from all future sessions at DeVry. DeVry processed ****************** drop request on October 19, 2023. In reviewing these calls, there seemed to be a misunderstanding from the DeVry advisors on ****************** request. DeVry is unable to provide students with the original documents that were submitted during the admissions process. However, DeVry can provide unofficial copies if requested.
On October 19, 2023, *************** spoke with another DeVry representative and was provided the email address for the DeVry registrar department to request a copy of his ***. That same day, **************** emailed DeVry registrar department requesting a copy of his *** and the DeVry registrar department sent **************** a copy of his *** via email that day per his request. The email indicated that the document was not considered an official copy since DeVry was not the issuing institution and that the student would need to request his *** directly through the ************** ********* Department if he needed an official copy.
****************** program required 122 credit hours, of which 27 were in the Criminal Justice specialty. ***************** Federal Student Aid was not used to pay for the official copy of his ***, the fee was paid by DeVry. *************** was correctly advised that DeVry could not release an official copy of his *** but was not immediately given the option to request an unofficial copy. DeVry apologizes for any inconvenience that this may have caused ****************. DeVry emailed **************** an unofficial copy of his *** on October 19, 2023.

Devry's website features online classes as part of its advertising strategy. However, they do not. Despite their repeated promises, the absence of live classes was evident. In addition, it is worth noting that during the Summer 2023 term, a teacher was required to conduct a class for us. However, it is important to highlight that instead of providing us with proper instruction, the teacher simply provided us with the answers to our assignments. The math teacher, along with other individuals, provided us with a file containing the answers to our homework assignments. Despite the school's recommendation to utilize ******* videos for assistance, I ultimately did not gain any knowledge from my experience at Devry. The desired outcome is to request Devry to waive all term payments. The cancellation of the final semester resulted in a significant waste of my time. In retrospect, it would have been wiser to anticipate the outcome and accept the financial setback. However, I have decided against providing any additional funds. This letter is in response to the October 8, 2023 complaint *************************************** submitted to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). DeVry University (DeVry) understands that ************************ is concerned with DeVrys online courses. Specifically, she states that DeVrys website advertises live ******s, professors instruct students to view ******* for assistance, and a Summer 2023 term professor was required to host live ******s but did not. Additionally,************************ states that her math professor provided a file with answers to the assignments.
On April 22, 2022, ************************ signed an enrollment agreement for the Bachelor of Science in Management program starting in the May 2022 session that began on May 2, 2022. DeVry records show that ************************ utilized cash through her employers reimbursement program to pay tuition and fees. All of Ms. *********** courses were completed via the online modality.
DeVrys website provides information related to onsite and online courses. Online coursework is completed asynchronously throughout DeVrys eight-week sessions. At the discretion of each faculty member, an optional synchronous live ****** may be held each week that is recorded and made available for viewing by students that were unable to attend. DeVry was unable to locate information on its website that advertises all online courses will host a live ******. ************************ completed ten courses with DeVry and eight of those courses included a form of a live ******. The two courses that did not include a live ****** occurred during Ms. *********** May 2023 session[1],which was her last enrollment at DeVry and her only Summer 2023 enrollment.
Based on the supporting documentation ************************ submitted with her complaint, DeVry believes she meant the Spring 2023 term, specifically BIS245 and not the Summer 2023 term.DeVry confirms that the BIS245 professor held weekly live ******s. Due to circumstances beyond the professors control, the professor did not hold a live ****** during Week 2 and Week 6. The professor replaced the live ******s with video recordings related to each weeks material. As mentioned above, live ******s are at the discretion of the faculty who are not obligated to host live ******s. When faculty host live ******s, the ******s are typically held each week. While Ms. *********** BIS245 professor planned on hosting weekly live ******s, events outside of his control prevented live ******s in two of the weeks. The professor provided video recordings during the two weeks that he did not provide live ******s.
Faculty have the freedom to decide how the course is taught, including the format of optional live ******s,when to hold office hours, and whether to include additional resources to supplement the course material. Faculty may elect to cite *******, or other web-based content, as supplemental information. DeVry found Ms. *********** BIS245 professor provided four website links as supplemental material. These links were posted in the courses threaded discussions to facilitate discussion and were not used as the main source of course material. While faculty may elect to use websites such as ******* for supplemental information, it is not a requirement and not all professors elect to do so.
DeVry found no record of Ms.*********** ******* professor sending a file with the assignment answers. ******* uses a learning system known as Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS) that leverages an Initial Knowledge Check at the start of the course to determine topics where a student may need additional practice. ************************ may be referring to study guides that are provided that allow students to refresh their knowledge before taking their Initial Knowledge Check. The questions ***** presents throughout a students learning path are algorithmic and adaptive. There is no way to provide students with a file of answers since the questions that each student receives differ.
DeVrys courses may be held in an asynchronous or synchronous format, and DeVry does not advertise that all online courses are held with a live ******. Ms. *********** first eight courses (out of ten) included a synchronous ******. DeVry was unable to locate record the students were provided a file containing answers to the assignments.If ************************ has additional information about this concern, she can submit it to the email address below and DeVry will investigate the additional information.

DeVry University (DeVry)understands ****************** concerns to be that he requested to unenroll from DeVry and to stop his financial aid, but he received multiple emails increasing his Federal Direct Loans and Federal Pell ******
On June 30, 2023, **************** signed an enrollment agreement for the Bachelor of Science in ******************** Systems program intending to start in the September 2023 session that begins on August 28, 2023. DeVry records show **************** intended to use Federal Student Aid to pay tuition and fees during her enrollment.
On July 8, 2023, **************** was initially enrolled in COMP100 for the September 2023 session. On July 26, 2023, COMP100 was dropped and COLL148 and ENGL112 was added to his September 2023 session enrollment. **************** emailed DeVry on July 28, 2023 stating, I have decided to take my education down a different path , I would like to formally withdraw my application to DeVry and authorize a stop payment on financial aid to the school effective immediately. On July 29, 2023, **************** was dropped from all courses for the September 2023 session and at this time, is not enrolled at DeVry for any futures sessions.
On August 2, 2023, **************** emailed his Admissions Advisor asking why DeVry was still taking his financial aid. The same day, a Direct of Student Central replied to your email explaining the emailed title Changes to your 2023-2024 DeVry University Financial Aid Offer could be mistaken as being enrolled in courses and the letter was automated. He also explained that due to your dropped courses, your financial aid was being reversed and never disbursed as disbursements generally occur during week 2 of the session.
When students are awarded financial aid, their awards are scheduled for the award year. As such,financial aid was scheduled for the fall and spring semesters prior to you dropping all enrollment with DeVry. If a student is not enrolled, financial aid will not disburse to a student account. Due to your lack of enrollment with DeVry, future semester aid would not have disbursed. DeVry is in the process of taking down all future awards.

This letter is in response to the July 1, 2023 complaint ***************************** submitted to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). DeVry University (DeVry) understands Ms. ******* concern to be that her Federal ******* loan was discharged due to Total Permanent Disability and DeVry has not updated her credit report to reflect that.
On June 9, 2023, DeVry responded to the same BBB complaint by ****************. In that response, DeVry explained that that DeVry began processing Ms. ******* ******* Loan discharge four days after receiving the notification from the ********** of ********* and Ms. ******* discharge information was included in the May report that was sent to the ************************** System (*****) and would be sent to Experian.
Upon further review, Ms. ******* discharge was not included in the May report sent to Experian as previously indicated. However, Ms. ******* discharge information was sent to Experian manually on May 23, 2023. On June 30, 2023, another manual update was sent to Experian to correct the prior cancellation code for Ms. ******* discharge. Once received, Experian typically takes about three (3) weeks to update. The May ***** report was sent on June 8,2023, however, that report was sent back to University ********** Services (UAS)indicating there was a conflict in the date of the original principal balance.UAS is currently investigating this error as the date sent is the correct date and a new report is being sent the week of July 10, 2023. Once received, ***** can take ***** days to process updates.
DeVry included Ms. ******* discharge information in the May report that was sent to the ***** and in manual updates to Experian. While the ***** report was returned as an error,DeVry is currently working to correct this error as the data that was sent is accurate and a new report will be sent the week of July 10, 2023.

I have reached out to Devry on a multitude of different occasions. No one ever answers my messages except sporadically and when I tell them the issue I get ignored until another text blast goes out to everyone. First I was told I was enrolled in classes up to a certain point, then they would tell me to register/enroll in classes, then they sent a separation letter but then a follow up message saying classes started a specific day. Devry has continued to charge my financial aid and use my grants even after they said I was not registered for anything. I want any and if possible, all of this money returned to me. I have now responded to multiple messages telling them no one has answered me nor resolved my issue. They lied about program contents, length, literally any and everything they couldve lied about or mislead me, they have done so. Counselors are not helpful in the slightest and do not direct you to proper parties. I am absolutely convinced this school has robbed me and is misusing the funds provided to them as their program is nowhere near what they advertise it at and considering the fact I got a separation letter but still saw financial aid taken out is a HUGE red flag. I want this school shut down and charged hopefully with embezzlement and any other necessary/applicable criminal offenses. No one should be put through this ever again. DeVry University (DeVry) understands Ms. ******** concern to be that she has been misadvised regarding her program length. Additionally, ****************** alleges that DeVry has received financial aid for ****************** when she was not registered for classes.
On July 8, 2020, ****************** signed an enrollment agreement for the Bachelors in ************************* program starting in the September 2020 session that began on August 31, 2020. DeVry records show ****************** used Federal Student Aid to pay tuition and fees during her enrollment.
Pages ******* of DeVrys 2020-2021 academic catalog that was in effect at the time of Ms. ******** enrollment outlines the program details for the ************************* program (Attachment 1). The normal time to complete the program is 4 years, assuming enrollment in ***** credit hours per semester and attending 2 semesters per year. There are many factors that can extend the time it takes to complete a program, including taking fewer credit hours, taking sessions off, not passing or having to repeat courses. ****************** did not earn a passing grade in twelve (12) courses and withdrew from two (2) as shown in her unofficial transcript (Attachment 2).
****************** was continuously enrolled at DeVry through the July 2022 session, which began on July 4, 2022. ***************** was enrolled in two courses during this session, BUSN319 and HSM410. DeVry records engagement and attendance in online classes based on completion of academic events throughout the session. DeVrys academic engagement and withdrawal policies are outlined in pages ******* of DeVrys 2021-2022 academic catalog (Attachment 3). Students who do not complete an academic event in an online course for 14 consecutive days are withdrawn from that course.
In order to support student success, DeVry notifies students who are at risk of being unsuccessful in their courses, either due to lack of engagement or low grades. On July 7, 2023, DeVry left ****************** a voicemail reminding her to participate in her BUSN319 course. From July 11, 2022 through August 18, 2022, DeVry attempted to contact ****************** 28 times via text message and email reminding her to participate in both of her July 2022 courses but received no response. ****************** did participate in her courses sporadically throughout the session until Week 5 at which point she stopped participating completely (Attachment 4). On August 18,2022, ****************** was withdrawn from both of her July 2022 courses due to lack of participation. Ms. ******** Last Date of Attendance (LDA) was August 4,2022. ****************** was academically dismissed from DeVry after the July 2022 session for failure to meet the standards of academic progress. While ***************** was originally enrolled in the September 2022 session, her enrollment was dropped once she was dismissed. The July 2022 session was Ms. ******** last session of enrollment.
DeVry completed a Return to Title IV calculation (Attachment 5), which determines the amount Federal Loans and Grants DeVry is required to return to the ********** of ********* based on a students LDA. Based on the Return to Title IV calculation, ****************** earned the entirety of her Federal Loans and DeVry was not required to return any of loans that disbursed to her account for the July 2022 session. Ms. ******** ledger is attached for review (Attachment 6).
****************** was continuously enrolled in her program from the July 2020 session through the July 2022 session when she was withdrawn due to lack of participation. ****************** was academically dismissed from DeVry after the July 2022 session for failure to meet the standards of academic progress and has not been enrolled at DeVry since. DeVry completed Return to Title IV calculations as required but, based on the calculation, no Title IV aid needed to be returned. No Federal Student Aid has been disbursed to Ms. ******** account after the July 2022 session.

On June 1 my financial aid was dispersed to Devry to pay for my classes along with my federal student loans. Devry had a message on my student page when I log in saying my financial aid would be deposited in 30 days if I had a refund which I do. On June 1 I received an email from Devry saying that my financial aid was in my account and if it resulted in a credit I would receive it in 14 days. Then on the 5th, I got an email from them saying I wouldn't get my financial aid until the 27th which I told them is unacceptable because I need it to buy a new battery for my laptop so that I could continue to access my classes so that I could do my student work. I want my money they were paid and I need it today they were paid on the 1st of June it's the 14th and I need my money!Business Response

On April 3, 2023, ************** signed an enrollment agreement for the Undergraduate Certificate in Medical Billing and Coding program starting in the May 2023 session that began on May 1, 2023.DeVry records show ************** used ******* Student Aid and institutional aid to pay tuition and fees during her enrollment.
DeVrys 16-week semesters consist of two consecutive 8-week sessions. Students are awarded financial aid on a semester basis, and DeVry voluntarily disburses financial aid equally between both sessions to assist students in managing their funds. DeVry disburses ******* student loans for first-time borrowers 30 days after the start of their enrollment period. As a first-time borrower, Ms. ****** ******* Direct Loans for the first half of the Summer 2023 semester (comprised of the May 2023 and July 2023 sessions) disbursed on May 31, 2023. Tuition charges for upcoming sessions post to student accounts on Monday of Week 6 of the prior session. Ms. ****** July 2023 tuition charges posted to her account on June 5, 2023. Ms. ****** ledger is attached for review (Attachment 1). The screenshot of the Federal Direct Loan Disclosure Statement that ************** provided states The actual disbursement dates and amounts may be different than the dates and amounts shown below. DeVry disburses Federal Direct Loan funds in Week 2 of the session. DeVry University (DeVry) understands Ms. ******* concern to be that her Federal ******* loan was discharged due to Total Permanent Disability and DeVry has not updated her credit report to reflect that.
On ***** 27, 2023, DeVry received a notification from the ********** of ********* that Ms. ******* Federal ******* Loan had been discharged. DeVry utilizes University ****************** (UAS) as their loan servicer for ******* Loans. On May 1, 2023, UAS processed the Total Permanent Disability (**************.
On May 22, 2023, **************** emailed DeVry a copy of her discharge paperwork. DeVry responded the same day indicating that DeVrys internal loan servicing system has been updated with that information and that DeVry would submit the update to the ************************** System (*****).
Reporting to the credit bureaus and the ***** is done on a monthly basis. Since Ms. ******* discharge was processed on May 1, 2023, the monthly reporting for ***** had already been submitted. Ms. ******* discharge will be included in the May reports sent to ******** and *****. The May ***** report was sent on June 8, 2023. The May ******** report is expected to be sent around the 17th-18th of June. Once received, ******** typically takes about three (3) weeks to update and ***** can take up to 60 days to process updates.
DeVry began processing Ms.******* ******* Loan discharge four days after receiving the notification from the ********** of *********. Ms. ******* discharge information was included in the May report that was sent to the ***** and will be included in the May report that is sent to ********.

Devry Online university fees for 2021 paid out. In 2022 I only took trial period and cancelled out the Devry online and Devry confirmed over telecon that the concerned is cancelled out. Then they started sending bills for classes in 2022 that were not taken. Being a full time student in a University in 2020/2021/2022/2023 it is not possible to be student of Devry Online University also. If it is not possible to take classes from Devry Online it is not possible if that is the case Devry should not impart any online classes before taking the full fees. This letter is in response to the May 24, 2023 complaint ***************************** submitted to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). DeVry University (DeVry) understands ****************** concern to be that DeVry is sending bills for courses which **************** states that she did not take.
On July 2, 2021, **************** signed an enrollment agreement for Non-Matriculating students starting in the July 2021 session that began on July 5, 2021. DeVry records show that **************** utilized cash to pay for her tuition and fees.
**************** completed courses in the July 2021 and November 2021 sessions. **************** was enrolled in courses for the January 2022 and March 2022 sessions but dropped the courses prior to starting.
On October 28, 2022, **************** called DeVry and requested to be registered for COLL148 and SOCS185 for the November 2022 session that began on October 24, 2022. On October 29, 2022, **************** called DeVry and requested to add two additional classes to the November 2022 session, SOCS335 and LAWS310. **************** was advised to log in and begin immediately. **************** stated that she would log in later that day. On December 1, 2022, DeVry called **************** to remind her to pay her outstanding bill for the November 2022 session. **************** stated that she would pay her bill that night.
DeVry records engagement and attendance in online classes based on completion of academic events throughout the session. DeVrys academic engagement and withdrawal policies are outlined in pages ******* of DeVrys 2022-2023 academic catalog (Attachment 1). Students who do not complete an academic event in an online course for 14 consecutive days are withdrawn from that course.
On December 8, 2022, DeVry attempted to call **************** to remind her to participate in her LAWS310 course, as she had not completed an academic event in this course since November 30, 2023. DeVry was unable to reach ****************. On December 15, 2022,**************** was withdrawn from her LAWS310 course due to a lack of engagement. Based on ****************** last date of attendance being in Week 6 of the session, she is not entitled to any tuition refund. DeVrys tuition refund policy can be found on pages ******* of DeVrys 2022-2023 academic catalog (Attachment 2).
**************** last completed academic events for her COLL148, SOCS185 and SOCS335 courses on December 4, 2022. The November 2022 session ended on December 17, 2022, which was 13 days after *************** last completed an academic event in COLL148, SOCS185 and SOCS335, so *************** was not withdrawn from those courses and she received final grades in each of those courses. ****************** attendance (Attachment 3) and unofficial transcript (Attachment 4) are attached for review.
**************** was registered in 4 courses for the November 2022 session at her request and did actively attend those courses through Week 6 of the session. **************** acknowledged that she would pay her outstanding bill. The charges on ****************** ledger (Attachment 5) are valid and **************** is responsible for her outstanding balance.

DeVry is breaking the law by mis-leading students in order to continue to make a profit off of them. This letter is in response to the May 4, 2023 complaint ******************************* submitted to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). DeVry University (DeVry) understands ************** concern to be that DeVry is not issuing her diploma and requiring her to repeat courses that she already passed in order to meet the graduation requirements. Additionally, ************** alleges that she earned the grades that DeVry previously told her that she needed to earn in her last three courses in order to meet the graduation requirements.
On May 29, 2020, ************** signed an enrollment agreement for the Master of *********************** program starting in the July 2020 session that began on July 6, 2020. DeVry records show ************** used Federal Student Aid to pay tuition and fees during her enrollment.
DeVrys graduation requirements are outlined on page 133 of the 2022-2023 academic catalog (Attachment 1). One of those requirements is to achieve a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of **** or higher. On January 9, 2023, DeVry completed a graduation audit for *************. At the time, ************** had a CGPA of **** and was not meeting the minimum CGPA for graduation. On January 10, 2023, ************** received an email from ********************************* stating that she needed to earn at least a B+ in her remaining three courses, ACCT503 in the January 2023 session and, FIN510 and MGMT601 in the March 2023 session. ********************************* also explained in that email that ************** GPA still may not be high enough to meet the graduation requirement.
************** earned a B+ in her ACCT503 course, an A- in her FIN510 course and an A in her MGMT601 course. Those grades brought ************** CGPA to a ****, which did not meet the graduation requirement of a 3.0 CGPA. On May 3, 2023, ************** spoke with DeVry regarding her CGPA and asked to speak with ********************************* but ********************************* was unavailable. On May 4, 2023, ************** called DeVry and was told that she could retake a course in which she earned a lower grade in order to raise her CGPA. ************* requested to speak with a manager. No manager was available so ************** was told that one would call her back.
On May 5, 2023, ************** spoke with ********************************* who apologized for the miscommunication on Ms. ********* requirement. ************** was given two options for courses to retake in order to raise her CGPA. ************** elected to retake INTL500 for the May 2023 session, which began on May 1, 2023. DeVry will be covering the cost of the tuition and fees for the May 2023 session. ************** INTL500 professor will be working with her on any work that she missed during the first week of class.************** will still be able to participate in the virtual graduation ceremony in June that she signed up for. DeVry sent the attached letter to ************** (Attachment 2) summarizing the resolution.
