Devry is not releasing my refund. I had called multiple times in the month of November because my tuition was not showing paid. On 11/23/2022 I called again and was told that my package was not built out correctly and a ticket had to be submitted. Now I am being told that because it took so long to build they are applying the refund to the upcoming payment even though the issue was on their side.Business Response

Re:*********************
File No.: 18531866
Dear Sir or Madam:
This letter is in response to the December 6, 2022 complaint ************************************ submitted to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). DeVry University (DeVry) understands ************ concern to be that DeVry has not released his credit balance for the November 2022 session and that DeVry is applying it to ************ January 2023 session charges. Additionally, ********** alleges that his financial aid award was not packaged correctly, which caused the delay in issuing ********** his refund.
On October 27, 2022, ********** signed an enrollment agreement for the Undergraduate Certificate in Medical Billing and Coding program starting in the January 2023 session that will begin on January 2, 2023. On October 27, 2022, a request was made to change ************ intended start session to the November 2022 session, which began on October 24,2022. DeVry records show ********** used Federal Student Aid and institutional aid to pay tuition and fees during his enrollment.
DeVrys 16-week semesters consist of two consecutive 8-week sessions. Students are awarded financial aid on a semester basis, and DeVry voluntarily disburses financial aid equally between both sessions to assist students in managing their funds. DeVry disburses Federal student loans for first-time borrowers 30 days after the start of their enrollment period. As a first-time borrower, ************ Federal Direct Loans for the Fall 2022 semester (comprised of the November 2022 and January 2023 sessions) disbursed on November 28, 2022. Tuition charges for upcoming sessions post to student accounts on Monday of Week 6 of the prior session. ************ January 2023 tuition charges posted to his account on November 28, 2022. Since Federal Direct Loans are semester based and his January 2023 session charges posted to his account, the loan proceeds from the November 2022 session applied to his January 2023 charges.
DeVry has a process where a student can request a credit balance that was applied to their next session tuition charges. ********** spoke with DeVry on December 6, 2022 and requested that the November 2022 session credit be issued to him rather than applied to his January 2023 session charges. DeVry processed ************ request and issued an electronic credit of $770.00 to ********** on December 7, 2022.
If you should require further information regarding this matter or other DeVry matters, please feel free to reach out to ***********************************
Sincerely,

Dear Sir or Madam:
This letter is in response to the November 17, 2022 complaint ********************************* submitted to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). DeVry University (DeVry) understands that ****************** is concerned that she has received multiple phone calls and emails reminding her to log into class or be at risk for being withdrawn. ****************** also alleges that she has previously notified DeVry that she has internet issues preventing her from logging into class on a regular basis.
On March 2, 2022, ****************** signed an enrollment agreement for the Bachelors in ******************** Systems program starting in the May 2022 session that began on May 2,2022. DeVry records show that ***************** utilized federal aid to pay for her tuition and fees.
On October 24, 2022, ****************** began her enrollment in her November 2022 session courses. Students are expected to actively participate in all courses. As noted on pages ******* of DeVrys catalog (Attachment 1):
Academic Events
Academic events are recorded for the purpose of determining academic engagement status. Academic engagement is monitored via academic events as defined below.
In an online course, an academic event is the submission of a class assignment, participation in a discussion and/or activity, or completion of an assessment.
In a blended course, inclusive of connected classrooms, an academic event is the submission of a class assignment, participation in a discussion and/or activity, completion of an assessment or attendance/participation in the scheduled onsite class meeting.
In an onsite course, an academic event is attending/participating in the scheduled onsite class meeting.
Academic Engagement Warning
Students who do not complete an academic event for seven consecutive calendar days are sent an academic engagement warning notifying them that they will be withdrawn if they do not complete an academic event for 14 consecutive calendar days.
In order to support student success, DeVry notifies students who are at risk of being unsuccessful in their courses, either due to lack of engagement or low grades. On November 15, 2022, November 16, 2022 and November 18, 2022, DeVry contacted ****************** to inform her that she had not completed an academic event in her COLL148 course since November 9,2022 or in her SOCS185 class since November 4, 2022 and the risk of being withdrawn if ****************** did not participate. On November 16, 2022, ****************** replied to one of the emails sent by DeVry and stated that she already informed someone about her internet connectivity issues. DeVry could not locate any record of ****************** reporting any internet issues prior to this date. On November 18, 2022, ****************** completed an academic event in both of her enrolled courses.
If you should require further information regarding this matter or other DeVry matters, please feel free to reach out to ***********************************

Dear Sir or Madam:
This letter is in response to the October 26, 2022 complaint **************** ******* submitted to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). DeVry University (DeVry) understands that ****************** is concerned that DeVry has erroneously charged her $600 and made previous errors on her financial account.
On August 26, 2022, ****************** signed an enrollment agreement for the Associates in Health Information Technology program starting in the September 2022 session that began on August 29, 2022. DeVry records show ****************** used Federal Student Aid and institutional aid to pay tuition and fees during her enrollment.
DeVrys 16-week semesters consist of two consecutive 8-week sessions. Students are awarded financial aid on a semester basis, and DeVry voluntarily disburses financial aid equally between both sessions to assist students in managing their funds.
On August 26, 2022, DeVry spoke with ****************** regarding funding for the Health Information Technology program and the $****** balance on ******************** account from a prior program.DeVry confirmed that ****************** was eligible to use DeVrys Prior Balance Amnesty Award (***) to pay for that prior balance (******) and submitted a request on ******************** behalf that same day. The *** was processed for ***************** on September 29, 2022. That same day, an additional *** for $5,624.61 was processed in error on ******************** account. The error was discovered and reversed from ******************** account on October 17, 2022. That reversal recalculated previously applied awards on ******************** account. This recalculation resulted in an erroneous credit balance, as the prior awards had already been applied and issued directly to ******************. On October 19, 2022, ****************** was issued a $600.20 credit balance in error that resulted in a student account balance in the same amount.
On October 26, 2022, ****************** called DeVry regarding the balance on her account. DeVry explained the error that occurred and that ****************** would not have to return the credit. Instead, the $600.20 would be deducted from her November 2022 session credit balance. According to DeVrys records, during the call, ****************** insisted that she receive the full anticipated credit balance for the November 2022 session and not have the $600.20 deducted since it was a DeVry error. ****************** will still receive the total credit balance that she would have otherwise received if the error did not occur. In other words, ****************** received $600.20 of her November 2022 session credit balance early.
DeVry acknowledges the processing errors that resulted in ****************** receiving the $600.20 credit balance. Currently,****************** has a $746.20 credit balance that will be issued to her this week.
DeVry could not find record of any other errors on ******************** account. If ****************** provides additional information on when the errors occurred and the context, DeVry would be happy to research it further.
If you should require further information regarding this matter or other DeVry matters, please feel free to reach out to ***********************************

Re:***************************
File No.: 18315943
Dear Sir or Madam:
This letter is in response to *************** ******* s November 10, 2022 reply to DeVry Universitys (DeVry) November 8, 2022 response letter. DeVry understands that ****************** provided additional concerns about errors on her student account. These concerns include a $5,000 amount that was included and then removed from her account, a $400 one-time charge that ****************** has been charged twice, a $40 charge that appears to be from 2017 and a delay in the $1,300 credit balance. Additionally, ****************** alleges that she has been lied to when asking to speak with management.
As mentioned in DeVrys November 8,2022 response, DeVry erroneously processed a $5,624.61 Prior Balance Amnesty (PBA) award to ******************** account. The error was discovered and reversed from ******************** account on October 17, 2022.
DeVry welcomes the opportunity to explain the concerns ****************** has about the fees on her account. Included for reference are page 230 and 232 of DeVrys 2021-2022 catalog that was in effect at the time of ******************** enrollment that outline fees (Attachment 1).Page 230 states:
Learning Management
New and readmitted students are subject to a one-time per enrollment Learning Management System (***) access fee of $400. The *** is a virtual classroom environment designed to elevate the DeVry learning experience. Whether courses are taken online or onsite, students can easily access course materials, complete assignments and collaborate with faculty and classmates. If a student withdraws from all courses during the session in which the *** fee was assessed, the *** fee will be refunded. In such cases, the *** fee will be assessed in the next session in which the student registers.
****************** was charged the $400 *** fee on September 3, 2021 and August 31, 2022. The fee is charged per program enrollment. ****************** was charged the fee the second time after completing the Medical Billing and Coding Undergraduate Certificate program and enrolling in the **** program. Additionally, page 232 of the academic catalog describes the ******* Services fee as:
A nonrefundable charge of $40 per session is assessed to cover expenses such as those associated with computer hardware and software upgrades; library enhancements;use of and enhancements to labs, printers, mobile applications, student portal and email services; student activities and services; and graduation.
The ******* Services charge posted to ******************** account as $40 ******* Service Charge July 2017. The 2017 is at the end of the description because DeVry updated the fee in 2017, so this distinguishes it from the prior charge.
Regarding ******************** credit balance from the November 2022 session, DeVry found no delays in issuing her the credit balance. ******************** Federal Pell ***** and Federal Direct Loans disbursed on November 4, 2022 and ****************** was issued a $786.20 credit balance on November 9, 2022. Federal regulations require institutions to issue credit balances resulting from Federal Aid within 14 days. ****************** received her credit balance within 5 days.
As mentioned in DeVrys November 8,2022 response, the $600.20 credit ****************** received would be deducted from the credit balance created from her November 2022 session financial aid, instead of repaying the funds. The combination of the $600.20 and $786.20 credit balances that ****************** received totals $1,386.40, which is the amount she anticipated to receive for the session. Included for reference is ******************* ledge reflecting the two credit balances (Attachment 2).
On October 26, 2022, a DeVry manager spoke to ****************** at her request. The manager attempted to explain the $600.20 charge and the resolution. ******************** husband then took over the call and began being disrespectful to both ****************** and DeVry. DeVrys manager advised that the tone needed to remain respectful or the call would be disconnected. ******************** husband continued to be combative, so DeVry ended the call. DeVry was unable to locate any instance of ****************** being provided incorrect information to by DeVry.
If you should require further information regarding this matter or other DeVry matters, please feel free to reach out to ***********************************
Sincerely,
***************************

I have been attending this college since May of this year and have had no problems. I have been getting emails and phone calls harassing me about getting some papers filled out on my portal. I have filled out everything that I can and I'm still getting harassed that I need proof of residence. On my driver's license, I have my address on it that I have lived at this address for 5 years and I was told that they need proof of residence before my driver's license was issued. This is absolutely ridiculous!!! I told them that I have lived at my residence for 5 years but I'm not getting anywhere with them.Business Response

Dear Sir or Madam,
This letter is in response to the September 12, 2022 complaint ********************************* submitted to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). DeVry University (DeVry) understands Ms. ******** concerns to be that she was receiving phone calls and emails to complete paperwork on her student portal.****************** completed everything that she could but is being notified that she needs to provide proof of residency. She provided her drivers license that has her home address that she has lived at for the last five years, but DeVry informed her that she needed to submit proof of residency prior to when her drivers license was issued.
On March 2, 2022, ****************** signed an enrollment agreement for the Bachelors in ******************** Systems degree program and began enrollment in the May 2022 session that started on May 2, 2022. On July 21, 2022, ****************** provided a copy of her ** drivers license. However, the drivers license was issued to ****************** on October 27,2021. DeVry does not dispute that ****************** may have lived at the address for the last five years, the drivers license only covered the timeframe of October 27, 2021 through August 31, 2022. Proof of ** residency for August 30, 2021 through October 26, 2021 was still required for her to receive the *** *****.
On August 23, 2022, ****************** provided utility bills to show proof of residency for the missing timeframe. On September 14, 2022, ****************** provided additional utility bills that included the dates of service.
As ****************** recently submitted the documentation, DeVry still in the process of reviewing to ensure all required paperwork is on file.DeVry is disappointed to hear that ****************** felt harassed in DeVrys outreaches. Dear Sir or Madam,
This letter is in response to the August 5, 2022 complaint **************** ************* submitted to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). While ************* Jrs complaint does not specify an exact concern, he references a check in the amount $694.00. DeVry has record of inquiries by Mr. ************* about a $694.00 credit balance check and this letter will provide additional information regarding the check.
On April 26, 2022, Mr. ************* ****** an enrollment agreement for the Undergraduate Certificate in Networking Essentials and began enrollment in the May 2022 session that started on May 9,2022. DeVry records show Mr. ************* utilized Federal Student Aid to pay his student account charges. DeVrys 16-week semesters are comprised of two eight-week sessions. Students are awarded financial aid on a semester basis, and DeVry disburses financial aid equally between both sessions. ************** Jrs summer 2022 semester was comprised of the May 2022 and July 2022 sessions. As such, the Federal Direct Loans and Federal Pell ***** that disbursed to ************* Jrs May 2022 session were also based on his enrollment in the July 2022 session.
On June 6, 2022, DeVry mailed a $694.00 credit balance check to Mr. ************* when the amount of financial aid disbursed to his account exceeded the tuition and fees. On June 17, 2022, Mr. ************* ****** a Stop Payment Request Form (Attachment 1) that DeVry processed on June 26, 2022. Once the form is processed, the check becomes void and DeVry reissued a new $694 credit balance check to Mr. ************* on June 27, 2022. On July 22, 2022, Mr.************* ****** another Stop Payment Request Form (Attachment 2) for the reissued check. DeVry processed and voided the check on July 27, 2022. DeVry has not issued a third check to Mr. ************************** the $694 credit balance check was issued to Mr. ************** the Federal Direct Loans and Federal Pell ***** that disbursed to his student account were based on his May 2022 and July 2022 session enrollment. At the time the second Stop Payment Request Form was processed by DeVry, Mr. ************** elected to drop his enrollment in the July 2022 session. As such, he became ineligible for a portion of the Federal Direct Loans and Federal Pell ***** that disbursed to the May 2022 session. Below is a chart that reflects the return of his Federal Student Aid.
Federal Student Aid Type Return Date Amount Returned
Federal Direct Subsidized Loan July 19, 2022 $234.00
Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan July 19, 2022 $1,131.00
Federal Pell ***** July 22, 2022 $335.00
The partial return of the Federal Direct Loans and Federal Pell ***** also resulted in a student account balance.Currently, Mr. *************** student account balance is $393.28. Included for reference is his student account ledger (Attachment 3) that reflects his balance, the voided credit balance checks, and the partial return of Federal Direct Loans and Federal Pell *****.
