Review of the 2024 return that was filed, the customer elected to pay the filing fees by using our File & Go option. With this option when the IRS releases the refund, the third-party bank receives the refund, pays us our program fees, and deducts their processing fee. Then they forward the remaining refund to the customer.
Users must sign a Refund Agreement to use File & Go, which outlines the terms and conditions of the service. In the agreement signed when selecting this option, it is outlined that the payment is due within 21 days of the return being accepted. If the IRS does not release the refund in that time, the program fees are still due and will be auto debited from the account listed in the return (only our program fees).
To view this agreement, the user can log into their TaxSlayer account, select “Summary/Print” from the left-hand menu, and then click on “Refund Agreement.”
When the IRS does not process the return within a specified period of time, we auto debit the account for the program fees. This is outlined in the refund agreement the user has indicated they read and understood. Since the program fees were not paid at the time of filing and have not been collected from the refund, the auto debit process was initiated. If the IRS releases the refund, the fees will not be collected again.

TAXSLAYER ripped me off! Warning to all on social media.
      My state refund was $119.
TaxSlayer took 97% of my return as fees.
      They only sent me $3.
      Massive money grab.
Don't use TaxSlayer and spread the word to those you care about.
They can make up whatever bogus excuse they want in rebuttal, but it's still unconscionable.

Thank you for reaching out. After carefully reviewing your account, we can confirm that during the e-filing process, the File & Go option was selected. This option allows program fees to be deducted directly from your tax refund, rather than paying upfront with a debit or credit card.
When File & Go is selected, your refund is first sent to our third-party banking partner, ***** ******* *** ******** ***** (*****). ***** processes the refund, deducts the applicable fees, and then deposits the remaining balance into the bank account you provided.
In your case, File & Go was selected for both your Federal and State refunds. Your state refund of $119 was released to ***** on March 31, 2025, and the following fees were deducted:
      Program Fee: $73.90
      ***** Processing Fee: $41.99
After these deductions, the remaining $3.11 was deposited into your designated bank account.
We understand this may be frustrating, and we want to assure you that all fees associated with the ***Slayer program and the File & Go service are clearly disclosed before completing the e-file process. Additionally, users are required to sign a Refund Agreement that outlines these terms and conditions.
If you’d like to review this agreement, you can log into your account, select “Summary/Print” from the left-hand menu, and then click on “Refund Agreement.”

TaxSlayer charged me without my consent and they took their fees from my return. This situation feels a rip-off and deceptive. The return process was as straightforward as possible, yet transparency was lacking (single, one income, no independent, don’t own a house, international, no retirement savings etc.). If fees were genuinely required for filing, the system should have requested credit card information upfront. Instead, there was no clear indication that charges would be deducted from the return itself. Additionally, marking HSA as an error only to impose high fees once entered seems manipulative. The practice of attracting customers with the promise of free filing, only to later impose unexpected charges, feels like a bait-and-switch tactic. I am charged about $130 without consent. I trusted the platform as I signed up for simply free tax edition (my return is not complicated to buy any special service and even if fee-based fee should not be more $20-30). I intend to take action by filing complaints with the BBB, ***, ***, ****, and possibly ***. My goal is to highlight TaxSlayer’s flaws and potential deceptive practices to raise awareness and protect other consumers from similar experiences. I had to give one STAR because minus stars don’t exist.

It appears the user filed through a VITA program for 2023 and 2022. The qualifications for VITA and our Simply Free packager differ. Our Simply Free Edition is limited to users who have a simple tax return. The program will upgrade the user's account automatically if you add a dependent, choose to itemize, and more. On the TaxSlayer Simply Free product page we have a details and disclosures section that provides additional details.
When a customer visits the summary/print section within their account, to pay the program fees, there is a message alert at the top of the page that states the user started in the Simply Free package but no longer qualifies for the free package. On the same page, we have another indicator that provides the customer with the reason(s) the account was upgraded. In this user’s case, the upgrade was due to the customer adding information for the HSA that the program explicitly indicated not to add if it was already reported on the W-2.
In reviewing this account, I also see that the user selected the File and Go option instead of paying upfront with a Debit/Credit Card. When the user navigates to the e-file process, they are presented with an option to either pay now with a card or elect to use the File & Go option. The File N Go option incurs additional fees. All fees are shown to the user prior to e-filing, The user must acknowledge the fees to continue or start the e-file process over and pay by debit or credit card.
As a courtesy, we have submitted a refund request for the filing fees. Once the refund has been approved, the user will receive an email notification. A mailed check will be sent to the address on the accepted return within 4-6 weeks.

It was aweful. I used so many different programs, this was the worse. They didn't read my 1099 correclty, and the program is more confusing then *******+instructions that comes with the form. At the end, I used ******* to figure it out for me. A waste of money,
Plus, there's no chat option. You have to pay for that and they are only oopen 9-5.

We understand taxes can be stressful and difficult to understand. We do our best to provide helpful text in the program along with a large variety of helpful articles that are more in depth.
Review of this customer’s return shows the user did import the 1099-B into the program. Once the information is imported, we show a disclaimer at the top of the screen which indicates how many files were imported and any errors. We also recommend the user review the information as we do not have access to their tax documents since this is a self-preparation site. I do not see any errors in the program and none of the items imported were edited for review.
We offer a large range of articles to assist the user with various items in the account. We have articles that deal specifically with the import of 1099-B information. These are available throughout the program by clicking the Help & Support button.
The Help & Support button is also where the Chat feature can be found. During tax season, we have extended hours. However, after tax season, as it is now, we are open 9-5. Chat is only available in our Premium and Self-employed products. The customer has the Classic package which does not include the premium chat feature.
We appreciate the feedback regarding the user’s experience.

The reason for my complaint is mainly that there were no clear instructions. For EXAMPLE, I played around with the program for a few days to amend my return, trying to figure out why it did not give me an option to efile the state return. There were no instructions or indication that I could only MAIL in my state return. If there were any indication at all, it was difficult to find. I now printed out the hard copy to mail, which again has no instructions to mail. I have no idea which pages should be mailed, including a federal voucher and federal amended tax return instructions.
The articles were also of NO help as it did not address any of the administrative issues and it require a certain amount of knowledge to search.
And I even emailed your service, which gave me a cookie cutter replied. I had to read through a long email to find the answer at the END OF THE EMAIL.
I understand this is not a premium service, but this is much worse than any other program I have used thus far. I would never use this again. The only thing I would add is that it is the cheapest, so maybe I got what I paid for.

Review of the account indicates the IRS rejected the return due to the incorrect entry of the prior year AGI. Per our refund policy, we do not refund for rejected returns but will assist you with correcting your return.
The Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is on Line 11, Form 1040 of the 2023 return. However, if the return was not e-filed and accepted before Oct 15, 2024, we recommend you enter $0 or answer No to the questions asking if you filed a prior year return. The IRS may not have updated their database with the AGI from last year if you did not e-file the return prior to the extension deadline. This is why we recommend you use the $0 AGI amount if the return was not e-filed.
An email indicating the reason for the rejected return and steps to correct the rejection were sent to the user’s mailbox.
We have refunded the fees for the processing of the tax return as a courtesy. The refund will go back to the card used to pay the fees.

I purchased Taxslayer to file my 2024 taxes. I found this program to be flawed in every sense. The program has a list of categories to import your information in, however if I didn’t import all my information at the time and wanted to go back, this program would not allow me to access that field again, as if it had locked me out. When I finally got customer support, they were of no help, so I went on thinking that it would give me a chance to go back at some point, No, I had to buy an amendment program, another $42! because somehow it filed my taxes without being finished. After days of frustration, We bought Turbo Tax, had no issues, except that Taxslayer filed already, and you can only file ONCE w the IRS. We are still not resolved w the IRS bc of this. The Turbo Tax is correct, but Taxslayer is not! I want a Refund from Taxslayer as their program is flawed and they filed bf I was finished. Customer Service was Zero Help!

Review of the account shows the user has file dwith TaxSlayer in 2024 and two previous years. The user would not need to import the 1040 as they filed with us successfully the year before. The import of the 1040 is the only import that the user cannot be returned to after bypassing.
Our program supports the import of the W-2 (ADP only), and the 1099-B through the brokerage account. We also support the upload of various forms such as 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC and 1098-C. As the deadline approached, the import feature for the brokerage account may have been taken longer than normal.
TaxSlayer does not file returns on behalf of the user. The user must complete multiple steps to e-file the return. The last step indicated by ‘Sign and File’ in the account.
I have entered a refund request for the amended return for the customer. The refund will be issued to the same card that was used to make the purchase.

The software is awful, was able to complete the return on a Simple Free version and when was ready to e-file. I entered a promo code and it instantly upgrade the version to Classic. When I called customer service to see if they can downgrade my package to my original version. They would not do it. Total rip-ff!

Unfortunately, the account began in the Classic Edition and does not qualify for the Simply Free Edition. The user has used the Classic Edition in the three previous tax years as well.
The Simply Free Edition allows for the basic return without any adjustments, credits or dependents. This return contains dependents, additional income and credits. Additionally, the income is more than we allow for the Free Edition. Visit https://www.taxslayer.com/# (What is a simple tax situation? See if you qualify.) for the information allowed on a Simply Free account.
No funds for the 2024 account have been collected. Only an extension has been filed which is free. There is no promo code added to this account.
The user is a long time customer so we are happy to offer a free federal Classic return for the 2025 tax filing year. When you log into the account in January, the promo code will be applied. If you do not see the discount applied, reach out to us before filing the return.

Taxslayer did my 2024 taxes. My state return was wrong. I had to go thru the hassle of filing an amended return and ended up paying instead of a refund. I will never trust them to do my taxes again.

Review of the account indicates the customer added the same W-2 two times. The 1099-R entries also have the state information entered twice. This is not due to an issue with the program but is a manual entry error.
The customer needs to amend both the federal and state returns and remove the duplicate entry for the W-2. The second state entry for each 1099-R will also need to be removed.

I used Tax Slayer for my 2024 tax year for the first and last time. I believe that they are not truthful in regards to charges. I was understanding that I was to pay ***** total and tried to pay the fee with a credit card instead of having it taken out of refund but doing that was difficult because it wouldn’t go through and I even emailed them saying “did you receive my payment “ and no response. So out of frustration I let them take the fee out of the refund. I was to receive *** from fed and *** from state. I received *** from fed and never got my state. So after a few calls to IRS and them putting a tracer on it they suggested I call tax slayer so I did. Well now they told me the total fee was ***.00 and that wiped out my state refund plus *.00 of my fed. I feel that they were dishonest in not disclosing the total fee and I will never use them again.

      TaxSlayer.com

      Date: 03/10/2025

Review of the account shows the TaxSlayer fees were indeed $**.**. The third-party bank charges a fee of $**.** to use their service and have the fees deducted from the refund rather than paying them upfront. This brings the total to $***.**.
When the customer enters the e-file process, the option to have the fees deducted from the refund is displayed (if the user qualifies). The customer must agree to the fees and sign the agreement indicating they agree and understand the fees. The user is not locked into having the fees deducted from their refund until they e-file the return. They can restart the e-file process if they agree to have the fees deducted from the refund and then reconsider prior to e-filing. This is disclosed prior to e-filing.
