On 7/13/22 my computer froze. On screen was a Microsoft notice saying I could no longer use my computer and call the listed toll free number which I did. I think Microsoft cleaned my computer and transferred me over to Metacom. Desperate to get my computer back, I agreed to a 1 year security contract. They accepted check only. On 1/16/23 during a monthly tune up, they found malicious software and needed to run a full network removal tool taking control of my computer over night. On 1/17/23, after sufficiently instilling fear I was compromised, they recommended a security product and began a sales pitch. When I asked why my current service wasn't covered for this type of virus, he said my coverage is for internal security and now I needed external security. He offered 1 yr, 3 yr, or lifetime plan ($900 to install) and quickly brought up websites to price compare. Metacom was much cheaper and the lifetime cost seemed the best deal. I asked if they had senior rates, no they didn't. I verbally agreed to lifetime and I was transferred to someone who downloaded software. He said my computer would be released to me next day and I'd receive docs and provide a check. Meantime, I contacted friends to see if this seemed legitimate. All said it sounded shady. The next day I told agent I wanted to switch from lifetime to 1 yr plan. He didn't think there was a problem with that and left the line to check. He came back and said it was okay, someone would call with the docs. The person who called back said I could not change plans, it was a customized installation strictly for me. He was combative, rude and sent me back to the other agent. I asked agent to bring up one website (SonicGuard) he used for cost comparison and took photos. My computer was released to me and I have ignored their calls to get docs and write a check. The product used for their price comparison is sold to to mid-sized organizations and distributed enterprises, of which I am not. They know I'm retired.
