I was trying to disconnect our Spectrum account for our rental property. I looked online for Spectrum Customer Service and saw the number 877 988 6698 so I called it. The service person said that there was a $10 disconnection fee so I used by credit card. Then the person started to ask suspicious questions such as my social security number, etc. When he asked for my mother's maiden name, I felt like something was amiss. Then he asked me to call another number 826-300-5770 which I did and he asked if I got a text message from them...it was labeled as a Barclay's text. I confirmed I got it and recited the id numbers in the text message. Then he said that there was a second text which was notifying me via Barclay's that I should confirm a charge for $55.10 at ATA FOOD (PVT.) LIMITE. He said that it was a dummy charge and if I validated it, the $10 fee would be paid to Spectrum. I refused. The sales person identified himself as James Marshall ID number 3114 (probably bogus information) I told them I would go to the Spectrum store to cancel and told them to cancel my payment. They then proceeded to call, at least 5 times from 872-270-5300 with the locations of the calls noted as Washington DC and Chicago although it was the same number. When we went to the Spectrum store, the associate advised me to call my Bank of Hawaii Barclays customer service number and report what happened. In less than an hour, the scammers charged over $2000 of goods and services. Bank of Hawaii, Barclays declined the charges made by these individuals, cancelled my credit card and will create a new credit card.
