I am looking for a remote position to work from home. I saw a TikTok video by someone named Alexis Mitchell detailing remote job openings for data entry and virtual assistant roles.
The video provided a code for a chat-based interview with a person named April Wilson. To proceed, I was instructed to download the Signal app and communicate with her there. Through the app, I had to answer about 20 questions regarding my past work experience, military status, and other topics to determine if I was a good fit.
Forty-five minutes after my answers were supposedly sent to the "head department," I was told I was hired. A list of expenses for work equipment was then sent to me in the chat. I immediately told them I would not be paying any money for supplies, and they assured me I would not have to.
Then, they said I just needed to complete a simple task: go to a grocery store and purchase Visa gift cards. At that point, I knew it was a scam. I tried calling the person, but there was no answer; they would only communicate via the chat app. They then said that if I wasn't ready for the work, I should "respectfully decline" the offer.
