Top tips for finding the best jewelry stores
Spending money on diamond rings or other fine jewelry is a big decision to make. Finding a local jeweler can be a daunting and overwhelming process. BBB is here to help you find a jeweler you can trust.
Here are questions to ask as you shop your local jewelry store or online jewelry store:
- Is the jewelry store a member of any professional associations, including BBB?
- Does the jewelry shop have an established reputation? Look for reviews on BBB.org and elsewhere.
- Can store employees show their credentials? Credentials to look for include certifications from Jewelers of America, Gemological Institute of America, or American Gem Society.
- Do they have fair return policies and reasonable warranties? Wedding rings are major investments and should be treated as such by the local jeweler.
Buying jewelry from online jewelry stores
Buying jewelry from Etsy or another online jewelry retailer may seem like an affordable and attractive option, but online jewelry stores come with slightly more risk.
- Make sure the website is secure. There should be a lock icon to the left of the website URL.
- Always use a credit card. That way, if you are purchasing an expensive item like men’s wedding bands, you will have recourse to recuperate your costs.
- Look for a liberal return policy with a full refund.
- When buying diamond rings or engagement ring sets, ask for a grading report from an independent gemological laboratory.
Discount jewelry store considerations
While larger jewelry stores are always secure options, some may want to opt for affordable fine jewelry. Keep in mind, a lower price can mean lower quality.

Accreditation and Ratings Overview
Select businesses earn BBB Accreditation by undergoing a thorough evaluation and upholding the BBB Accreditation Standards.
BBB assigns ratings from A+ (highest) to F (lowest). In some cases, BBB will not rate the business (indicated by an NR, or "No Rating") for reasons that include insufficient information about a business or ongoing review/update of the business's file.
