More information on finding auto salvage you can trust
Auto salvage yards, also known as junkyards, accept or purchase used or junk vehicles that can no longer be driven. Vehicles are then auctioned off or taken apart for useable parts that can be sold or refurbished. Any remaining parts of the car are recycled as scrap metal.
If you have an old, used car that is no longer being driven and costs more to repair, selling it to auto salvage can be a good option.
Taking your car to a junkyard will likely not result in a big sale if it is in dire condition. Depending on the car’s model, size, and condition, you may be able to sell it for a few hundred dollars. The better shape the vehicle is in, the more money you can make.
When selling to an auto junkyard, you need to provide the basic details of your car, like the make, model, year, mileage, and condition. This will help determine the value of your car. You must also provide your vehicle’s title to the buyer to prove you own the car. Have your car’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and registration on hand, too.
If you plan to sell your car to an auto salvage yard but it’s undrivable, you’ll need to get it towed. Check with the salvage yard you’re selling to, as it may offer towing services for an additional price.
If towing is not offered or you want to arrange it yourself, search for towing companies near you and look for the BBB Seal to find BBB Accredited Businesses. Compare pricing between several towing companies to ensure you get the best rate.
If you’re in the market for a used car and are looking at auto salvages, remember that a used car can’t be driven on the road legally if it has a salvage title. Many people buy salvaged vehicles for their hobby of repairing cars – the car itself can be repaired or scrapped for parts to repair other vehicles.
However, some formerly salvage-titled cars may now have a rebuilt-title. This is common with vehicles that suffered damage from a crash, flooding, or another incident. Rebuilt-title cars have been repaired by a mechanic, passed safety inspections, and are ready to be driven again.
If you plan to buy a rebuilt car, get the vehicle’s complete history and a full inspection. Get as much information about the car as possible before deciding if you’re comfortable purchasing and driving the vehicle.
Remember that while a rebuilt car may be a cheaper option now, it may be harder to sell later, given its salvage history.
Always look for the BBB Seal to confirm whether an auto salvage business is BBB Accredited. Whether selling your vehicle, purchasing one, or looking for refurbished parts, working with a company you can trust is critical. Check the company’s reputation online by searching BBB.org and looking at customer reviews and complaints.

Accreditation and Ratings Overview
Select businesses earn BBB Accreditation by undergoing a thorough evaluation and upholding the BBB Accreditation Standards.
BBB assigns ratings from A+ (highest) to F (lowest). In some cases, BBB will not rate the business (indicated by an NR, or "No Rating") for reasons that include insufficient information about a business or ongoing review/update of the business's file.
