    Reliant Energy is an NRG Company, and while NRG Energy Inc. is not an Accredited Business, several of NRG’s subsidiary/brands are.  One of those brands is Direct Energy. At that time, BBB staff informed all parties of the No Tolerance Policy for bad door-to-door sales practices.  Those practices included sales reps misrepresenting themselves as the consumer’s current energy and/or gas provider, failing to be transparent during the sales process, misleading consumers, and using deceptive sales practices to sign consumers up for their services.  It was agreed going forward, those type of complaints would cease.  While Reliant Energy does not receive door-to-door complaints, the brands under NRG have received complaints and reviews regarding the sales practices of their employees who are stationed in a discount store that include misrepresentation of pricing/billing and consumers being signed up without their knowledge.

      I started NRG energy in 2020 through Samsclub, when they told me that the rate is 0.0825. Then only few months later they increased the rate to 0.115 on Sep14 2020, then to 0.1205 on Sep14, 2021, then to 0.134 on Dec 13, 2021. In total, the rate increased by 62.4%! Whereas the average rates for PA energy is around 0.1. See this link: https://ycharts.com/indicators/pennsylvania_electric_utility_retail_price. Even if this plan is variable rate, the rate should not be too much above the average. The unreasonable rates led to a increase of $300 in electricity bill just for the past 12 months alone. More important, I have not received any notice regarding the rate increases. In addition, based on Samsclub's benefit, they should send yearly credit but I only received the credit for 2020 thus far.

      So I received an Email about a month ago, stating that my contract was about to expire, and I needed to pick a new plan. Last week I received a letter in the mail stating the same thing, that I needed to pick a new plan before April 12th so I could get better rates. I went online and they were charging me way more than what I was already paying with them. I started doing some research and found other companies that I could get better rates from. I went ahead and got a new energy company to start a new contract yesterday which was April 10th. I get an Email today April 11th from reliant saying my account is cancelled. then I get an email from reliant with my final bill. I usually pay $120 to $150 a month, and it says the final bill is $350. So, I call reliant to see why my bill is more than double of what I usually pay, she said is an early cancellation fee, I explain to her that I received multiple letters letting me know that my contract was going to expire on the 12th and that I needed to pick a plan so that I would not get charged extra. Well, the operator said that the extra charges were for early termination, and that it is what it is. So reliant charged me $200 for cancelling their service one day before the contract ends.
