I paid TTP for a patent search in 2021, the results came back negative. I moved forward with TTP paying money for the provisional patent, then paying for another step, then more money to respond to the patent office only to get a denial in 2024 because the invention already exists. And the inventor lives in the same city as me! I've invested almost 10k into this process just to find out the patent already exists when TTP told me it didn't. There has to be something I can do about this. This is flat-out burglary!

My review on working with Thoughts to paper was a real nightmare, trying to take advantage of the small consumers who were trying to look for a honest Firm to get Patents granted but instead they nickle and dime you and take you through nultiple rinse cycles,i was dealing with Jay,with a simple patent for a outdoor game board nade of wood and still couldnt get a patent approved, stating it was in reconsideration that inorder to get them to stay with it,they needed 1500 more dollars to continue after i paid 1500 for provision patent then 4900 for last patent and they still tried stringing me along shame on your shady tatics to bleed these lone consumer on trying to get there patents ..i tried reaching out for a refund but was ignored.

We are a patent law firm that has obtained to date, over 4,800 patents for our clients in the 16 years our law firm has been around. We know what we are doing. However, the patent application process is a legal process which costs money. Unfortunately, this client thought that he could pay for a patent application and get an immediate, guaranteed, approval. It doesn't work that way. Once you apply for the patent application, the patent office will often come back with questions and objections. We must then respond to those questions and objections from the patent office to even possibly get a patent. We make this clear to all inventors before we start work. When this client received a first letter from the patent office, he did not want to pay for our attorneys to argue with the patent office and gave up without a fight. Unfortunately, this client will not receive a patent. We look forward to assisting other inventors in their pursuit of a patent as we have done so for thousands of inventors over the years.

My review is in culmination of 4 years of working with TTP: They will nickel & dime you, provide subpar service, which will lead to further required actions so they can nickel and dime you more. I originally had them do a Patent Search, advertised as 5-8 days, I checked in after 2 weeks and was told it would be ready the next day. It was another week before I received it. The “Patent Engineer” grabbed the first 3 patents he could find with basic search terms from my invention, none of which even closely related and he contradicted himself in his own report. The WIPO and USPTO examiners found multiple similar prior arts – zero overlap with TTP. I paid $449 for the provisional patent, a year later another $3k for a PCT (zero discounts for work already completed). The review came back that Claim #1 described NOTHING original in my invention – basically described the current market space. That’s when I learned Claim #1 HAS to pass the requirements or the entire patent is rejected. I paid a “professional” firm to write it because I assumed they would know these things. Another year I pay them to file the USPTO Utility patent (they rearranged a few claims, and submitted it. They charged me another $2500 for what I already paid $3000 for them to do). I hear nothing for 4 months, I ask for an update and they rush me a draft in a day (be prepared to be ignored and then receive rushed work). When the patent examiner missed the amendments, they charged me a $750 retainer to call/email the examiner (I received the communication summary from USPTO, it was VERY brief). The Patent is finally approved! They charge me ANOTHER $595 to file the Allowance Fee (it’s a 1-page form already 90% filled in by the USPTO. When you ask their Online Chat they claim the $3k fee covers all services to receive granted patent, pure lies). The retainer was completely used up to tell the patent examiner “you forgot to read the amendments” which he immediately recognized (45min Email, 45 phone, 1hr doc drafting, 30min case history research, 15 min admin tasks. There was no back and forth). The patent is granted – I’m patiently waiting for weeks. Turns out it has been sitting in their mailroom, instead of being mailed to me. Then they tell me it normally takes them a MONTH to forward patent letters. Talking to 2 of their paralegals one stated ALL physical mail goes directly to the client because they receive digital copies from USPTO, while another states clients receive NO physical mail. Infuriatingly unorganized and incompetent.

Unfortunately, a client that is upset about paying fees to professionals for the time it takes to obtain a patent. The patent process is that, a process, one that requires back and forth with the patent office. Sometimes, as in this case, the patent office even makes mistakes, and we have to tell the patent office those mistakes. This all requires labor which we deserve to be compensated for. This client wanted us to do work for free, which unfortunately we could not do. In the end, we are glad to add him to our list of over 3,000 patents we have obtained for clients over our 14 years in business.
