In 2020 we sought out bids with multiple contractors to replace our roof, and informed all contractors that a main concern we had was that there was leaking around our chimney. All bids included a line in their estimate to install a saddle to divert water around the chimney. In the end, we signed a contract with MJ Contracting LLC on 5/15/2020 to do a complete tear-off roof replacement with new saddle around the chimney for $9200.00. After several delays beyond the promised start date, work began 6/30/2020. When the work was completed, we were informed that the workers did not think they could install a saddle, so they just paid extra special attention to the flashing around the chimney and assured us that we would not have any leaking issues. We were not given the option, we were just told this is so. I expressed concern but ultimately relented. We paid the contracted price, and the check cleared the bank on 7/1/2020. We had a heavy snow season the following winter, and with the spring thaw came leaking in the same spot we had before the roof was replaced. We reached out to MJ Contracting via email on 3/8/2021 requesting the saddle be installed as originally quoted. The owner had promised us they would be out to fix the problem in about a week. By September 2021, no one had come to address the problem, so we reached out on 9/1/2021. This time the owner arrived at our house within a few days. He insisted we had a leak because a corner of the flashing had lifted. He nailed the corner and caulked all exposed flashing. He assured us that would fix the problem. I said I hope so and if not, we'll have to go to the original solution. We had a drought over the fall and winter, so it wasn't until heavy spring rains that we saw the "fix" did not solve the problem. We continue to have leaking in the same area.
