Before you hire these people or anyone you need to make sure you have gone through every single object in your house and that you know what is and is not there. If you have time, you might as well mark the prices on all of them and sell them yourself. It will be less financially and emotionally draining than hiring these people to help you with this process. In your state of grief and mourning, I’ve also found that you need to be very clear and state that you want to see that inventory list and any photos before they put them online. I say this as even before this point, but especially after, Caring transitions of the Chippewa valley feel that they own all the objects in and outside of your house and that if you find something that wasn’t supposed to be there, you will be told that you are “ruining our sale”, not your sale as the person who hired them, but their sale. I expected them to have common decency, and procedures set in place to make sure there was every opportunity to make sure items that were not to be a part of the sale would not be included. To me that would mean providing any list of objects that are being put up online would be provided to myself and my family. I do not know at what point they took this inventory, the photos, nor placed them online - so had no chance to make sure they were correct before being advertised. Again, as the person who has not gone through this before and in a state of grief - one would hope that they were in your corner wanting to help make this tough experience at least a little bit easier. Instead if felt (and this is how it felt I do not know their intention), but it felt like they actively did not want me to see any of these objects in fear that I would say no they are not for sale. Again, as I was/am expecting to pay them, I was not working to make a profit off of the sale of my belongings. However, it was clear that they were working to make a profit off of me and my family. Additionally they gossiped around town about myself, my family, and our house. They miss advertised the date of the sale, charged us for the incorrect advertising, refused to acknowledge that they were at fault for this even if it was the mistake of the newspaper and online site. They tried to have family members pay for the furniture which was to stay with the house. They messed up the sale of the canoe, sold items that had been stated to be not for sale. During the flash flooding that occurred during the sale, they had books in paper boxes covering the drain in the garage causing flooding and ruining many books. They state that they couldn’t get the garage door to work on the day of the sale (which worked the three weeks prior when they were there). Instead of calling me and letting me know, they broke the garage door and then jimmied it shut. Again at no point did they notify me of this. They tried to sell items for an order of magnitude less than what they were worth and typically sold for at yard sales. More than once they mentioned that they might be interested in buying an object… many of those items were the ones that were priced low. They also continually referred to our belongings as crap and ugly in front of us. On the day of the sale they kept the dumpster outside- not great curb appeal… all in all they were careless with our belongings, disrespectful of our family, and refused to acknowledge when they did something wrong, or when something went wrong. To give them credit there were four people who were incredibly empathetic, nice, and kind. The other two-thirds of the company that I interacted with were completely un-empathetic, unprofessional, and uncommunicative. When you are in a place of mourning, you need people who will be in your corner. These are not those people. You are better off on your own, and probably much better off with a different estate sales company.
