      My complaint is about SEVERE rat damage to my belongings in storage. I have sent a letter to the company requesting monetary compensation for repair or reupholstery to my furniture and sanitizing of all upholstery. There are rat droppings and urine on most boxes and on all furniture, chewing on what upholstery I can see. The rats have eaten blankets, boxes, sheets, silk flowers, plastic on bed frames. That is all within eyesight. I dont what exists beyond that yet.I have pictures of the damage and I have asked for a representative from the company to be present when I move out of the storage unit so they can document the damage also. They have agreed to that but stated my contract says they dont cover rat damage. I was told the units are near a forested area and homeless people live there and that the location alone would suggest rat issues. I have had storage units for business purposes for over 20 years. Never once had mice or rat issues. I moved to Olympia nearly two and a half years ago, put my items in storage expecting them to be secure not expecting rats to eat them. I put rat traps, poison, mint packets inside my unit. Asked them to put traps outside when first noticed the droppings. I was told by one of their employees that a chef had stored items in a unit that attracted the rats and they were working on getting rid of them and I was not the only person who was suffering from the invasion. I finally contacted exterminators to rid them in my unit. I was told by more then one company that the issue was holes between floors that allowed the rats to go down pipes between floors that Secure It wasnt willing to pay to plug because of cost. They chose the birth control method that was less expensive. In the meantime, my possessions continue to get eaten. About 4 months ago they put traps in my unit. My house construction is nearly completed and will be moving out soon. I want assurances that they will repair, disinfect and compensate me for damages.

      As the District Manager for ********************************************/Secure-It Self Storage, it is my responsibility to handle situations like this. I have personally made the customer aware that it states in our contract (signed by both the customer and a company representative) that we do not cover any personal property (see attachment).  Furthermore, we do have a 3rd party vendor that is in charge of rodent control for our property, and we try to safeguard things as much as possible.  It is the responsibility of every tenant to set up insurance on their end if they choose to have any sort of coverage for items/belongings being stored.

      I am rejecting this response because:

      This is a HEALTH issue for me, my family and the movers of my belongings!

      This is a health issue. Rat droppings and urine on the floor, my furniture, boxes. This is only with in eyesight. I have no idea what damage has been done deep inside the unit because I am afraid to go too deeply,  everything they have touched is contaminated. It all needs to be disinfected. All upholstery needs to be disinfected and professionally cleaned. Upholstery needs to be repaired. The rats have chewed through the protective wrapping to gnaw on the upholstery. I am quite certain the owners and or managers would not move my furniture into their homes in this condition. 

      The company did not plug the holes surrounding the pipes that allowed the rats to slide down and  move from floor to floor having free run from unit to unit, according to the pest exterminators. They chose a less expensive fix of rat birth control that allowed the damage to continue.

      Rodent insurance does not cover the extent of damage done to my belongings.

      Secure It waited to respond to you once I signed my exit paperwork hoping I will go away quietly. I will not.

      I have submitted my complaint to the ************************ for review as the BBB was not timely or helpful. They seem to be more interested in whitewashing Fiordland businesses. The ** office says I DO have a case and I will be following through with an attorney for satisfaction. DO NOT use Secure It Storage for safe storage of anything other then metal.
