We retained Better Home Improvements ("BHI," parent company: Better Bathrooms and Kitchens, Inc.) to complete a kitchen renovation project. After meetings (in person) including with the President of the company, Tracy White, emails, and phone calls, we entered a contract pursuant to which we would pay $98,500 to BHI to remodel our kitchen. Right away, a change order was made (to cover a new wall) and we paid a little over $12k in addition to our initial deposit of ~11k.
After signing the contract on May 26, we paid an additional $40k to BHI via check (all payments were made via check) in order to order the cabinets. We met at ********* in *********, where the cabinet order was to be made in early July with the cabinets to arrive in late-August or September.
On Sept. 11, 2023, I received a text from Tracy White (via # ###-###-####) stating "Good afternoon. This is Tracy White with BHI. I am in the process of closing the charlotte office and filing for bankruptcy. I'm very sorry for the situation. It is my ultimate responsibility. But I've had terrible management through out. And I've had significant health issues the past year. I would advise that you contact the state to discuss the transaction recovery act to recoup moneys owed to you. I've been advised I cannot communicate any further at this time. Again, I am very sorry for the situation. This was never my intent. I will be emailing you a letter this from my lawyer to help explain the process of filing transaction recovery."
Our understanding is that there are 40+ families in ** that have given money to Mr. White with no progress on their renovation project ever having been made or their project abruptly being halted. My family and I are now out $63,000.00. Upon information and belief, Mr. White is continuing to operate BHI in *****, ******** (and the website has been updated to show only *****, ** as their location).Initial Complaint

Seeking the refund of down payment provided for the build of a room to an existing home. The contract was signed 6/12/2023. No work has commenced. Communication has been minimum. No known permits obtained. The contract was signed with Better Home Improvements - **** ******* in Huntersville. Per the contract, a refund should be provided per request if no work has commenced - which none did. While reaching out for a status update, we noticed a "Permanently Closed" notation associated with the Huntersville contact information on ******. We found Better Home Improvements at the ******* **** **** in the spring of 2023. They came to our home and worked with them on a home renovation that included new flooring, ceilings, drywall, lighring fixtures, installing a exterior door, and taking down a load bearing wall. A contract was signed and they were given a down payment of $25,000. They pushed back the start date of our project multiple times and would rarely respond by email or phone call. On 9/6/23 they finally sent workers out to take down the drywall on our load bearing wall so that an engineer could take measurements for the beam the following day. We never heard anything else from this company until 9/12/23, when we got an email from the owner saying that he was filing for bankruptcy and would not be finishing any projects. We now have an unfinished renovation that was barely even started and have lost our down payment to this company.Initial Complaint

Put out a request for general contractor services on home advisor. Scope of work was basic. Build foundation for shop in back yard, grade and install driveway and join front sidewalk to driveway. Install shower,washer/dryer hookups, wire shop for lights, install restroom with plumbing in shop and tankless water heater. Remove two trees intersecting driveway, finish grade after shop slab is poured and driveway completed. Work with steel building manufacturer. File and obtain permits to provide code compliant structure and foundation. General contractor hired to alleviate sub-contracting duties on me the home owner, I have no construction experience. Upon contract agreement to terms, I paid in installments as agreed. I did not receive the work as contracted. What i received was a foundation that failed code in the most basic levels. General contractor failed to provide a blueprint that city inspectors could evaluate during code inspection. When I requested the blue prints, I was told we didn't need them on a small project like this. Foundation failed visually, code stated we needed engineering blue prints and stamped signatures on design and physical structure to pass code. So the footers were too small, dimensions were wrong for the foundation, and the mortar was incorrectly mixed too wet. They left out structural required rebar and dura-wall wire mesh in the courses of block. The mortar cracked when it shrank up after drying and the block wall shifted down, blocks were easily pushed off the footers/foundation. Upon hiring a engineer myself to provide code passing remedies, was advised to tear down all existing construction and restart. At this point, the project is completely wrecked, and the business owner filed for bankruptcy. These guys have been on action 9 news before. Have done this very same exact thing before under a different company name. I found this out after contacting the permit office and investigating the contractors history.Initial Complaint

I went under contract with Better Home Improvements in December 2022. the contract had an effective date of January 9, 2023. The contractor started in March 2023. The contract was supposed to be completed in 6 months. September 5th we were notified that the owner wanted to meet with us. September 7th we met with the owner, and informed him that we would not terminate the contract, and we expected them to finish the work. September 8th the company pulled off the site including all of the equipment. September 9th at 7:15 AM we received a text from the owner telling us that he was not going to complete the work and we needed to hire someone to complete the project.
We are now trying to get the project completed, but he left the site in a state of mess with trash and some of the wood is not able to be used.
It will cost us in additional rent and expenses for labor and materials nearly $40,000 to complete the remaining work.Initial Complaint

My complaint stems from poor workmanship in the master bathroom and unfinished repairs.
Electrical - new outlet has the wrong socket type installed and has no trim plate.
Painting – the painter didn't prepare for painting I.e., painted un-sanded sheetrock, no primer. Also, no trim plates were reinstalled after painting was completed. The painting sub-contractor spoke no English and just laughed and kept saying the name of one of the contractors' “managers” when I said anything.
Damage – A pipe created a hole in my living room ceiling, it was left partially repaired. Water stains from leaks created during the remodel on the living room ceiling have been left un address.
last contact mid-December was told they would come back after the holidays. They never came back.
I would like to get a refund of $1,500.00 to $2000.00 to cover the costs of correcting the errors and repairing my living room ceiling. i.e., hire a painter to properly prepare the walls and ceiling in the bathroom and repaint. also, to fix the damage to the living room ceiling. and have an electrician install the correct outlet and cover plate.
Amount paid to date $21,000.00.
paid to date $21,000.00Customer Answer

We live in ***** ******** and we hired Better Home Improvements to remodel our bathroom and add a fireplace to our four seasons room. The total for the project was $64,500 and we signed a contract and paid them a down payment in the amount of $15,750 on 10/18/22. The fireplace was the first project and work began on 11/28/22 and was being done by the owner, Tracy White's, son. He was young and was doing a poor job and had no supervision from the company. We cancelled our job for the bathroom remodel based on the quality of the fireplace job. We did not receive a refund for the deposit amount for the bathroom remodel and after several attempts to reach the owner, Tracy White, we received no reply. After one week on the job of the fireplace they sent an email on 12/2/22 saying they would not be coming back and would send us a statement for how much the would refund us minus their expenses. We never received an email or response to several attempts by phone, email and certified mail. We found out they are not licensed in the state of ***** ********, they have taken our money and committed contract fraud.
