I saw Dr Till for what I ask for and thought was a routine eye exam that my insurance company pays in full once a year.
I filled out my new patient forms and specified on them that I was there for a routine eye exam. I told the receptionist that when she tried to make me pay a copay. I showed her my benefit from my insurance company website. She did not make me pay at that time. Once back in the first of three rooms I was ushered to during my visit, I mentioned to her the same, that I was there for a routine eye exam.
She checked my prescription using my current glasses. She checked my sight on a wall chart, then took me to another room and said someone would be right in for my exam. I had drops placed in my eyes, which is normal when I have been to other eye exams, so I thought nothing of it. The doctor came in an checked the pressure in my eyes, and looked in my eyes with a light. I began having a feeling like I was not getting a routine exam, but something more. The Dr. said he was going to take pictures of the backside of my eyes. I questioned the assistant again and ask if this is normally done on a routine exam. She assured me it was. That's when the assistant took me to another room to take pictures of my eyes. I again asked the next woman the same thing, as I was beginning to stress over the situation. That person assured me as well that Dr Till is up on all the new tests and it was routine.
They sent my insurance a claim that was not coded routine. They paid their portion and now I have been billed for the copay. I didn't even receive a prescription for new glasses. I called the office and talked to the office manager, who argued with me and said I shouldn't have come there if all I wanted was a routine eye exam. Then she said it would be another $35 to have him write a prescription. I wrote a letter explaining the same as above and it was ignored. I feel that the copay should be waived because I feel I was misled during the exam.

The claimant Sarah ****** was seen in our office for an eye examination and this was also delivered to her. She apparently just wanted a free eye glass exam as per her vision insurance and we gave her a full eye exam as required by all insurances for her specific medical diagnosis. The staff tried to explain that I am a medical doctor specializing in eye diseases and that I do not file vision insurance but only medical insurance, but she was not too interested in any discussion other than how to get her free exam. The staff also offered to have her see our staff Optometrist who could do the vision insurance covered exam for free and she insisted on seeing me although she was again told that her vision insurance would not cover this. She mentions that we did not even give her an eye glass prescription, but again that is covered by the vision insurance and what we did was covered by her medical insurance minus any co-pay etc. It should be noted that a free vision exam would not give her the level of examination necessary to satisfy both her primary doctor as well as her insurance. So, the event seems to me to be an issue of her wanting to see me and her vision insurance only covering basic exam and eye glasses prescription and not a full medical exam as is necessary for her condition.
