They installed a DEFECTIVE transmission. No refund
I payed $4.5K for a relatively new transmission with 10,000 miles on it. Four months later, while enroute to Seattle for a new job, I broke down, and discovered that Gearbox had put a defective transmission in my car. It was giving all kinds of diagnostic error codes, smoking, and leaking fluid everywhere. They refused to reimburse me or the shop for their crappy transmission job. I ended up having to pay an extra $6k to put yet another transmission into my car and stuck in some random town, unable to get to work.
The warranty on the transmission potentially covered it, but because I didn't have the time or money to tow my car hundreds of miles back to Gearbox, they refused to help me. The fine print in their warranties do NOT include nationwide coverage and they won't pay for their mistakes. "Gearbox this is ******" used a very accusatory tone with me, was constantly interrupting and pointed the finger at me and at the shop who diagnosed my car. I'm a disabled Marine Corps infantry veteran just trying to survive and this whole thing almost crushed me.
Their lack of moral and professional standard in this case is appalling and they ought to take that American flag OFF of their website if they can't take accountability for when things go wrong. This review is the straight-up, no-BS truth. "Gearbox this is ******" will probably respond to this with some kind of dismissive comment, but of course will say whatever to protect business and ensure that they get your money. I check my fluid levels often and take care of my vehicle! So they can't accuse me of that. I've talked to multiple other people, including a few jet mechanics who have also voiced concerns about this shop.
Choose wisely & learn from my mistake by always reading the fine print of terms of service from corrupt auto shops who install faulty transmissions. Gearbox Transmissions ??

WOW ! If all that was the Truth I wouldn’t want to do Business with those folks either !
The first contact we had with ******* RE: a potential Transmission problem was 10/09/2024 in the AM. We were told he broke down in the Lynchburg area on his way to a new Job in Seattle. He explained that he was at an Auto/Trans Shop and they were diagnosing the problem.
We asked to get a copy of that Shops remarks as to what they found and the present Mileage. A far as our Tone we were trying to get the Information see how to solve the problem since he was away from Richmond. There was nothing accusatory, only establishing how to Help.
The Warranty on Used Transmissions is Specific and there are procedures that need to be followed to Cure any potential Warranty Issue. The originating Supplier before they will arbitrarily replace a Transmission will require the present Mileage-any Codes and what has failed. We waited for that info and after phone calls back and forth it seemed the Shop was having difficulty getting this-It was ******* who finally Texted us on 10/10/24 an Invoice for a Remanned Transmission Replacement !
It was at this time that ******* said he approved the Transmission to be removed to “Find Out” what was wrong. Already that is a big NO NO! If the Customer does not follow the Warranty procedures they jeopardize any help from the Transmission Supplier NOT Gearbox . We are not responsible for The Warranty terms that the Supplier requires-the Customer is. Also If you are an adequate Transmission specialist it does not Require that process. When a Trans leak is involved the First item is to identify location-Second to refill the transmission and Retest to clear any codes that Populated due to low fluid levels. If the Test Drive is good then you proceed with Repairing the Leak. It doesn’t require a Replacement.
When we received the Invoice that the Shop was going to Charge *******, it was at this time we were concerned that THEY were taking advantage of him in his desperation to get to Seattle. Our tone was Accusatory toward THEM – NOT *******. I told him that their charges were way out of line and that they were trying to double charge him items that come as a package NOT separate charges. Their bill had a final cost of over $12,000.00 Dollars! They were the ones who were trying to get over on *******, NOT us!
He already paid them some Money down toward this end. He is the one who tied up his own hands to receive any Warranty Help. We did try to see during the Initial process if there was a way to get him a Transmission Replacement from that Supplier but they did not receive adequate timely response as to Reason and Condition to Warrant Such! Unfortunately there was no proof provided that that Transmission needed anything other than Leak Repairs-NOT Replacement. How Gearbox is maligned as a result of that Shops sketchiness makes no sense. Were sorry that ******* was Scammed and wish him well in his new Job.

DO NOT BRING YOUR CAR HERE! The owner and his son are absolute scammers. This shop price gauges car parts and labor and doesn't expect you to notice. Go anywhere else and you can get your car fixed for HALF the price and better results. We took our car here for a new transmission back in May 2024. The owner informed us the cost of the repair would be close to $3,000 (for a USED transmission). We were not required to sign anything upfront but did put down $1,500 so they could start the job. When we went to pick up the car, it was in worse condition than when we got it. We called the owner to inform him of the issue and they said they would fix it. Finally we picked up the car again but the car still didn't run as it should. We informed the owner of this issue and requested a refund. He told us to "come up with a number we think is reasonable" and he would consider it. When we came back to him with an offer he declined stating we weren't owed a refund. Instead the owner offered a $50 gift card to ********** *******.

Gearbox Transmission has been a A+ BBB Member for more than 20 Years. We are proud of that A+ rating earned vehicle by vehicle, customer by customer. However in that volume of Business we have had an occasional customer misunderstand the Detailed process of Vehicle Repair. It's always disappointing when we can't see eye to eye, and the customer just can't be informed of why we charge what we charge. ************** was given Information by a "Friend", who said he could have purchased the Used Transmission far cheaper. That could be true-BUT- it is not what Gearbox paid for our Used Unit. WE charge a fair price for each Job we perform. There is ALWAYS "Someone" who can do a Job cheaper. No business is going to start Refunding Payments in any of these cases. There is a Web Site in ******** where you can compare Repair costs PRIOR to agreeing to a Repair. This site quoted 15 other Shops in the area who would have replaced ****************** Used transmission for $2500 to $4000. We Charged approximately $3000. This is within normal costs range regardless of ****************** thinking. No one can please everyone.
